Sin ignorar las objeciones que merecieron los intentos de demarcar con precisión el territorio de la ciencia, rechazan la conclusión de que el conocimiento científico no pueda diferenciarse en absoluto de cualquier otro tipo de creencias. Conforme a esta convicción, en las páginas de este libro se recorren los esfuerzos dirigidos a la creación y a la consolidación metodológica de las ciencias sociales. Como si el estado de cosas que supuestamente constituía su objeto de estudio se hubiera reflejado en la propia disciplina, la sociología y, con ella, las demás ciencias sociales se han visto envueltas en una situación crítica a lo largo de toda su historia, en un continuo debate sobre su propia legitimidad. Los autores intervienen en esta discusión y examinan la fuerza de los argumentos que se han empleado para subrayar las diferencias que separan las ciencias sociales de las naturales. Confían en que las consideraciones sobre la especificidad de los fenómenos sociales –sobre si el enfoque correcto es el holismo o el individualismo, sobre si la historia humana está dotada de un sentido o no, sobre si lo único que importa es la estructura, sobre si el poder es intrínsecamente negativo y tantas otras cuestiones sin duda inquietantes– se lleguen a integrar finalmente en un sistema de conocimientos más sólidos, mejor compartidos y seguramente más fructíferos, acerca de la realidad social.
