Book excerpt: This collection considers how cultures influence each other's values and social organization to elucidate cross-cultural interactions. The idea of a special set of 'Asian values' in a more profound understanding has clearly had an impact on the thinking among Vietnamese scholars, but more surprisingly, the recent pan-Asian economic crisis has had a more profound impact than expected on the discussion in Vietnam. Most Vietnamese scholars speak not of 'Asian values' but rather of Vietnamese values because the Asian impact is transformed in the Vietnamese setting. Those dealing with modern society tend to perceive the Western value impact as positive and universal. Indeed, if there has been a period of much concern with 'Asian values', particularly Confucianism, the pendulum seems for most Vietnamese scholars to have swung back towards seeing Western values as being those of the future.

Book excerpt: Cultural Politics and Asian Values looks at the political, cultural and religious background of East and Southeast Asian societies and those of 'the West', with a view to seeing how they are affecting contemporary national and international politics: democratization, the international human rights discourse, NGOs and globalization. The book surveys the political history and pre-history of the 'Asian values' debate, taking it up to the era of Megawati Sukarnoputri, Chen Shui-bian and Kim Dae-jung. In chapters on Confucianism, Buddhism, Islam, Christianity and liberalism, Barr explores the histories and conceptual essences of the world religions involved in or affected by the debate.

There is high economic and political pressure. coming not only from internal developments but also from foreign countries. This groundbreaking book takes stock of the rapid processes of change in the labour market and the industrial relations of Vietnam. The contributions of Vietnamese and international experts cover the institutional arrangements of the labour market and of the system of industrial relations, and they also look at consequences for welfare and social inequality and treat the relation between culture and the economy in the country. Further contributions compare Vietnam with other developing country and analyse the relationships between international and Vietnamese labour markets. They also address the key question as to whether Asia is a new focal point of industrial conflicts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With internationalization, the world is becoming smaller and the opportunity to meet people from other countries and cultures is becoming more common, providing the need for cooperation, shared knowledge, and cross-border trade. Individual cultures tend to understand themselves best and base their understanding of the world and its peoples on ideas they each have come to believe irrespective of reality, and thus make it difficult to reach a proper understanding of other cultures. This book considers intercultural understanding and co-action, partly by means of general insights into the concept of culture and the dimensions which bring about cultural differences, and partly as a methodology to analyze a certain culture - whether one's own or others'. This leads towards an understanding of cultural complexity and cultural differences among people. The book provides a discussion of a number of ethical issues, which almost invariably will arise when people meet and co-act across cultural boundaries. Cultural Analysis offers a theoretical/abstract proposal for cultural understanding, intercultural plurality, and complexity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lack of access to clean water is an urgent problem in developing countries, including Vietnam. This book investigates the 'everyday politics' of domestic water supply and sanitation in the rural Mekong Delta. It offers new theoretical perspectives on policy-making in Vietnam, as well as the cultural aspects of globalization. The book shows that policy practices have to be understood as mechanisms for the (re-)production of a political order, manifest in the cultural and social properties of the Vietnamese state. It provides a critical perspective on donor support to Vietnamese water policy and practice. (Series: ZEF Development Studies - Vol. 20)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main problems faced by teachers and students who have a scholarly interest in Southeast Asia is the lack of general, user-friendly texts in the social sciences. The absence of an introduction to the sociology of Southeast Asia is especially unfortunate. This volume attempts to meet these needs. This is, then, the first sole-authored introductory sociology text on Southeast Asia that focuses on change and development in the region, provides an overview of the important sociological and political economy writings, and considers the key concepts and themes in the field since 1945. Some multiauthored works do exist but these either are outdated or focus on specialized topics. Aimed primarily at undergraduates up to the final year, it will also be a useful reference work for post-graduates and researchers who lack such a general work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those wishing to acquire knowledge on national development issues, this comprehensive compendium traverses a spectrum of subjects that the audience ought to be well acquainted with. The Editors provide instructive findings regarding national development, economic growth and their determinants, but they also offer historical perspectives on the subject and the implications for developing countries. The book addresses a suite of critical themes regarded by development experts to be germane in considering the pertinence of policies and their effective execution. These seven general thematic areas are explored: ¢ Leadership, governance, policy and strategy ¢ Public sector and public financial management ¢ Culture, institutions and people ¢ Natural resources ¢ Science, technology and infrastructure ¢ Private sector and financial markets ¢ Marketing, branding and service delivery This thematic approach enables the contributors to explore the impact of the constituents of each subject area on national development, within the context of a developing economy. The significance of the findings for the relevant stakeholders is consequently reviewed. The combination of theory and practice makes the book and its contents unique.

Book excerpt: In seeking to provoke debate, the book reveals the variety of experiences evident in countries and regions marked by capitalist and (post) socialist regulatory frameworks, and contrasting labour regimes, histories and cultures. The contributions show the importance of critically examining both the complex nature of global-local links and the particular ways economic processes are around the themes of labour regimes, labour processes, labour mobility and labour communities, the essays show how economic development is not only shaped by market forces but is also interlocked in systems of meaning.

Book excerpt: This open access book asks why and how some of the developing countries have “emerged” under a set of similar global conditions, what led individual countries to choose the particular paths that led to their “emergence,” and what challenges confront them. If we are to understand the nature of major risks and uncertainties in the world, we must look squarely at the political and economic dynamics of emerging states, such as China, India, Brazil, Russia, and ASEAN countries. Their rapid economic development has changed the distribution of wealth and power in the world. Yet many of them have middle income status. To global governance issues, they tend to adopt approaches that differ from those of advanced industrialized democracies. At home, rapid economic growth and social changes put pressure on their institutions to change. This volume traces the historical trajectories of two major emerging states, China and India, and two city states, Hong Kong and Singapore. It also analyzes cross-country data to find the general patterns of economic development and sociopolitical change in relation to globalization and to the middle income trap.
