Book Synopsis The Demographic Dividend by : David Bloom
Download or read book The Demographic Dividend written by David Bloom and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2003-02-13 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is long-standing debate on how population growth affects national economies. A new report from Population Matters examines the history of this debate and synthesizes current research on the topic. The authors, led by Harvard economist David Bloom, conclude that population age structure, more than size or growth per se, affects economic development, and that reducing high fertility can create opportunities for economic growth if the right kinds of educational, health, and labor-market policies are in place. The report also examines specific regions of the world and how their differing policy environments have affected the relationship between population change and economic development.

Book excerpt: While annual economic growth rates have frequently reached double digits in Asia, in the Pacific the rate of economic growth has been slow, in some cases below the rate of population growth. The Pacific faces a multifaceted issue linked to slow fertility transition that results in high dependency ratios, rapid population growth (unless it is reduced by emigration) and a substantial youth bulge, or even increasing youth cohorts. This paper will examine the case of the demographic window of opportunity in the Pacific in relation to age structures, fertility trends, reproductive health and population-related policies. It will also consider the conditions for hastening the onset of the window of opportunity and include a rapid comparison with Asia to show the extent of the differences within the Asia-Pacific region.

Book Synopsis ISS 10 Muslims in the West and the Challenges of Belonging by :
Download or read book ISS 10 Muslims in the West and the Challenges of Belonging written by and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensational reporting by the media has led to attitudes that racialise Muslims and frame them as potential threats to national security, placing them outside the circle of trustworthy citizenship. Muslims in the West are increasingly confronted with the pressure of conforming to dominant core values and accepting 'mere tolerance' from society, or else risk exclusion and even hostility when exercising their rights to maintain diverse cultural norms and religious practices. Muslims in the West and the Challenges of Belonging offers not only rigourous accounts of current difficulties, but also new thinking and deeper understanding about race relations and intercultural engagement in multicultural societies. It explores the increasing visibility of Muslim migrants in the West and the implications this has for multicultural co-existence, cultural representations, belonging and inclusive citizenship.
Book Synopsis Separatism and the State by : Damien Kingsbury
Download or read book Separatism and the State written by Damien Kingsbury and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes and tests a ‘theory of separatism’ to determine if there are key commonalities as to why separatist movements rise and what fuels them. In the post-Cold War period separatism has been on the rise. Today, there are more than 100 active separatist movements, with around 70 of them engaging in violence. This book focuses on examples from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia to highlight the commonalities found across the case studies. It examines the idea of separatism, to better understand what drives movements to break away from preexisting states; demonstrates the factors which produce both violent separatism and the rise of armed non-state actors; and shows the options for the resolution of such conflict, based on considering claims for separatism from the perspectives of separatist movements. This book will be applicable for undergraduate and postgraduate students of International Relations and International Politics as well as Conflict/Peace Studies, Anthropology and Post-Colonial Studies.
Book Synopsis HIV/AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine by : Graham Fordham
Download or read book HIV/AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.
