Book Synopsis Fragments of Grace by : Pamela Constable
Download or read book Fragments of Grace written by Pamela Constable and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four and a half years, Pamela Constable, a veteran foreign correspondent and award-winning author, has traveled through South Asia on assignment for the Washington Post. Following religious conflicts, political crises, and natural disasters, she also searched for signs of humanity and dignity in societies rife with violence, poverty, prejudice, and greed. In Afghanistan, she made numerous visits while the country suffered under the hostile rule of the Taliban, attempted to reach the capital in a convoy that was ambushed and saw four journalists killed. She finally moved to Kabul in late 2001 to chronicle the country's post-Taliban rebirth. In Pakistan, she covered a military coup in 1999, immersed herself in the mys-terious world of Muslim mosques and academies, and discovered both the extremist and tolerant faces of Islam. In India, she attended one of the largest spiritual gatherings of Hindu pilgrims in history and then rushed to the horrific aftermath of a devastating earthquake. She repeatedly visited the Kashmir Valley, where Pakistani-backed Muslim guerrillas are waging a seemingly endless war with Indian security forces. In Nepal, she covered the crown prince's massacre of the royal family and journeyed to remote villages where communist rebels brought rigid moral order to life. In Sri Lanka, she explored a tropical paradise where reclusive insurgents trained children to become suicide bombers in pursuit of a utopian ethnic homeland. Between extended sojourns in South Asia, Constable returned to the West to reflect on the risks and rewards of her profession, revisit her roots, and compare her experiences with Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. Her book is a uniquely personal exploration of the rich but solitary life of a foreign correspondent, set against a regional backdrop of extraordinary political and religious tumult.
Book Synopsis Soundtracks of Asian America by : Grace Wang
Download or read book Soundtracks of Asian America written by Grace Wang and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Soundtracks of Asian America, Grace Wang explores how Asian Americans use music to construct narratives of self, race, class, and belonging in national and transnational spaces. She highlights how they navigate racialization in different genres by considering the experiences of Asians and Asian Americans in Western classical music, U.S. popular music, and Mandopop (Mandarin-language popular music). Her study encompasses the perceptions and motivations of middle-class Chinese and Korean immigrant parents intensely involved in their children's classical music training, and of Asian and Asian American classical musicians whose prominence in their chosen profession is celebrated by some and undermined by others. Wang interviews young Asian American singer-songwriters who use YouTube to contest the limitations of a racialized U.S. media landscape, and she investigates the transnational modes of belonging forged by Asian American pop stars pursuing recording contracts and fame in East Asia. Foregrounding musical spaces where Asian Americans are particularly visible, Wang examines how race matters and operates in the practices and institutions of music making.
Book Synopsis The Rise of Asia by : Prema-chandra Athukorala
Download or read book The Rise of Asia written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of Asia examines emerging trends and patterns of foreign trade and investment in Asia with a view to contributing to the policy debate on how development strategies should be adopted in response to challenges to economic globalization. The existing body of knowledge in this subject area has predominantly been shaped by the experiences of the newly industrialized countries (NICs) in East Asia. This volume is inspired by the conviction that generalization from the NIC experience is hazardous because the on-going process of economic globalization over the past two decades has dramatically transformed the international context of national development policy making. Moreover, as ‘embracing market’, albeit at varying degree and rapidly, has now become an Asia-wide phenomenon, it is vital to look at the issues from a broader relational perspective, paying attention to opportunities for intra-regional division of labour within the wider context of global economic integration. This book will be of interest to students and scholars with an interest in Asian studies, economics, political economy and globalization.
Book Synopsis The Alpha and Omega by : Pat Burleigh
Download or read book The Alpha and Omega written by Pat Burleigh and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 1993 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the amazing revelation of God’s plan for the whole world. He knows the end from the beginning. The first part of the book encompasses all the aspects of salvation; and the consequences of not accepting his plan of salvation and obeying his word. This is a wonderful eye-opening book that enables us to walk through the corridors of time until we see the New Heaven and earth. It reveals the contrast between the Old and New Testament. This book answers the question of predestination. It also shows that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one.... unequivocally. It tells us what the definition of belief is. Scripture interprets scripture. With any doctrinal truth scattered throughout the Bible, when brought together according to topic, there can be no doubts of the truth of each doctrine. Part two of the book is all about interpreting the book of Revelation. Some of the scriptures have many topics. There are seven topics in Revelation 1:4: These are.... the seven churches; grace; peace; from him which is, and which was, and which is to come, and from the seven spirits: I have capitalized REVELATION and each subsequent TOPIC. The first time I write the scripture I do not put an asterisk in front of REVELATION. After the initial scripture I put an * in the front of every scripture .... *REVELATION until all the topics have been exhausted. EACH NEW SCRIPTURE IN REVELATION IS CAPITALIZED.
Book Synopsis Enigma: An Interpretative Commentary of Revelation by : Dr. Nathan Ogan
Download or read book Enigma: An Interpretative Commentary of Revelation written by Dr. Nathan Ogan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This has been offered to the reader as if to say that from the very outset, any study of Revelation that is done or offered without the direct application of Jesus' teaching, specifically His sermon on the Mount of Olives, is incomplete at best. The argument that God conclusively broadened His redemptive purpose beginning with the Jewish people then spread to all races, as promised in Matthew 28:19, rings true in Revelation when understood in the context of what Jesus taught. What's more, the development of temple-based worship into a simpler spiritual-based worship as expected in John 4:21-24 is equally difficult to ignore from what appears to have been fulfilled in the prophecy of Revelation as predicted by Jesus in His Mount of Olives sermon.
Book Synopsis A Revelation of Jesus Christ by : J.B. Smith
Download or read book A Revelation of Jesus Christ written by J.B. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-05-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction by Merrill C. Tenney: This commentary is an attempt to make plain the meaning of Revelation. With commendable reserve, Dr. Smith has restricted himself largely to interpretation by other passages of Scripture which are related to Revelation by actual quotation or by striking parallelism. His painstaking studies of vocabulary and of related ideas make the book valuable to the earnest student of the Bible. Dr. Smith is a futurist and a premillenarian, holding that all of the Book of Revelation beginning with the fourth chapter relates to the future period of judgment known as 'the great tribulation,' which will be followed by the personal return of Christ and by the establishment of His kingdom. In this regard he is in a long line of renowned commentators, including Seiss, Gaebelein, Ottman, and others. The distinguishing feature of this commentary is its use of Biblical statistics and comparisons. The uses of important terms in the Revelation are cataloged, and their interpretation is derived from their context. The appendices contain some extensive studies of individual topics, correlating information not easily obtainable elsewhere. Dr. Smith follows a literal interpretation except where avowed symbolism demands a different procedure. He has sought to make his exposition consistent in method and in results. His use of Greek is apt, and shows a careful investigation of the underlying vocabulary of the Greek text. This commentary will probably be the mainstay of premillennial exposition for some years to come.

Book Synopsis A Verse by Verse Commentary on Revelation by : Elder G. E. Jones
Download or read book A Verse by Verse Commentary on Revelation written by Elder G. E. Jones and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Revelation is basically a book of prophecy, yet it is full of doctrinal teaching. Such doctrines as God’s foreknowledge, the inspiration of the Word, the deity of Christ, blood redemption, the resurrections, repentance, faith, security, the perpetuity of the churches, Israel’s restoration, the great tribulation period, the judgments, the reward of the saints, and the earthly reign of Christ and His saints are all found in the book. The whole plan of redemption and the fulfillment of all prophecy finds its consummation in Revelation. The only light which God’s children have to strengthen and encourage them in this day of fear and uncertainty is the light of prophecy. God’s faithful saints put their faith in the coming of the Son of God, our Redeemer, our protector, and our sure refuge in the time of life’s gravest perils. Let us sound out the sure word of prophecy! From the author of: That Ye May Marvel or The Significance of Bible Numbers -and- The Pattern, The Tabernacle, The Christ. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.” (Revelation 1:3)

For each worship day within the three-year lectionary cycle, the commentaries in Connections link the individual lection reading with Scripture as a whole as well as to the larger world. In addition, Connections places each Psalm reading in conversation with the other lections for the day to highlight the themes of the liturgical season. Finally, sidebars offer additional connections to Scripture for each Sunday or worship day. This nine-volume series is a practical, constructive, and valuable resource for preachers who seek to help congregations connect more closely with Scripture.
