Book Synopsis Colonial Legacies by : Anne E. Booth
Download or read book Colonial Legacies written by Anne E. Booth and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that Taiwan and South Korea, both former Japanese colonies, achieved rapid growth and industrialization after 1960. The performance of former European and American colonies (Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and the Philippines) has been less impressive. Some scholars have attributed the difference to better infrastructure and greater access to education in Japan’s colonies. Anne Booth examines and critiques such arguments in this ambitious comparative study of economic development in East and Southeast Asia from the beginning of the twentieth century until the 1960s. Booth takes an in-depth look at the nature and consequences of colonial policies for a wide range of factors, including the growth of export-oriented agriculture and the development of manufacturing industry. She evaluates the impact of colonial policies on the growth and diversification of the market economy and on the welfare of indigenous populations. Indicators such as educational enrollments, infant mortality rates, and crude death rates are used to compare living standards across East and Southeast Asia in the 1930s. Her analysis of the impact that Japan’s Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere and later invasion and conquest had on the region and the living standards of its people leads to a discussion of the painful and protracted transition to independence following Japan’s defeat. Throughout Booth emphasizes the great variety of economic and social policies pursued by the various colonial governments and the diversity of outcomes. Lucidly and accessibly written, Colonial Legacies offers a balanced and elegantly nuanced exploration of a complex historical reality. It will be a lasting contribution to scholarship on the modern economic history of East and Southeast Asia and of special interest to those concerned with the dynamics of development and the history of colonial regimes. Download or read book Asia and China in the Global Economy written by Yin-Wong Cheung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume represents a collection of papers that examine important topical themes related to the rise of China and Asia in the global economy. It offers many useful insights on several issues that are hotly debated in the international community, especially in the aftermath of the recent global financial crisis. The contributors are renowned experts from academic institutions, central banks, and international organizations. Their analyses and points of view offer valuable insights for researchers and policymakers who are interested in the recent developments in China, Asia, and the global economy. Specifically, the thirteen chapters contained in the volume address four broad themes. The first theme is on open macroeconomics and transmission mechanisms that highlight the interactions between countries in the globalization era. The second theme covers the contentious issue of renminbi valuation, which has significant implications for the debate on global imbalances. The third theme covers currency internationalization and financial markets in Asia. In particular, two chapters discuss renminbi internationalization and yen internationalization, while the other two papers examine yen carry trade and the Asian credit card market. The fourth theme is external demand and fiscal stimulus in Asian countries.
Book Synopsis From Asian to Global Financial Crisis by : Andrew Sheng
Download or read book From Asian to Global Financial Crisis written by Andrew Sheng and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a unique insider account of the new world of unfettered finance. The author, an Asian regulator, examines how old mindsets, market fundamentalism, loose monetary policy, carry trade, lax supervision, greed, cronyism, and financial engineering caused both the Asian crisis of the late 1990s and the global crisis of 2008–9. This book shows how the Japanese zero interest rate policy to fight deflation helped create the carry trade that generated bubbles in Asia whose effects brought Asian economies down. The study's main purpose is to demonstrate that global finance is so interlinked and interactive that our current tools and institutional structure to deal with critical episodes are completely outdated. The book explains how current financial policies and regulation failed to deal with a global bubble and makes recommendations on what must change.
Book Synopsis Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia by : Kyoko Fukukawa
Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia written by Kyoko Fukukawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important issue in contemporary business, management and politics, especially since the launch of the United Nations Global Compact in 2000 as an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on them. This book examines the theory and practice of CSR in Asia. The philosophical and ideological underpinnings of CSR are rooted in Anglo-American and European principles of liberal democratic rights, justice and societal structures. This book not only considers the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, but also provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh – comparing the different meanings given to CSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced in different national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever to revolutionize the manner in which we trade then it is needs to open itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as it occurs around the world. The book re-maps and refines debates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be of great value to professionals making strategic decisions in the global business environment.
