Book excerpt: It is a common misconception that children on the autism spectrum find mathematics easy. In fact the opposite is true for some, and exposure to basic mathematics in the early years can be crucial in establishing the foundations for understanding later in life. This book provides practical strategies and tools for teaching key mathematics concepts to children with an autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays. The authors emphasise the importance of incorporating a child's special interest into learning in order to help them engage fully with new concepts. Topics covered include colours, shapes, categories, numerals, sequencing, addition and subtraction and using money, and the book includes worksheets and activities for incorporating mathematics into daily living skills. This is an essential resource for teachers, teaching assistants and parents who wish to develop mathematics skills in children with an autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-tech devices have incredible potential for enhancing the learning of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). In the world of computers, tablets, and smart phones, however, one device has received little attention: it is the calculator. Compared to newer devices, this instrument may seem nearly obsolete. However, mastery of the calculator has the potential to enrich a child's life both in school and in the community. For example, in school, use of the calculator can aid a child in solving the math word problems offered in the curriculum. With these skills, many of the children can go on to enter mainstream math classes. In the community, mastery of the calculator can enable a child to be proficient in important daily life skills such as shopping (e.g., keeping track of the price of purchases, selecting items to fi t available funds, and calculating the change expected from a cashier). Such skills play a key role in achieving independence in daily life. This program aims to teach children how to recognize, use, and understand the buttons on a calculator. It contains five levels. The first level teaches the child to handle single numbers. Each level becomes progressively more complex so that by Level 5, the children can work with three digit numbers as well as symbols on the calculator such as plus (+), minus (-), and equals (=). Upon completion of this program, the child is ready to move on to applying these new skills to math problems. This program may be implemented by a parent, teacher, therapist, or other adult.

This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of children have been diagnosed with autism or fall somewhere within the autism spectrum. Early intervention, education, and training programs have been found to support these students immensely, leading to a higher level of independent social life than has previously been seen. Anxiety, bullying, communication, and learning abstract concepts can be a great challenge for autistic children and can also provide an obstacle for social interaction with other children. It is important to continue offering these students access to a broad, enriched, and balanced curriculum while also devising new approaches and alternative systems of communication that will help to facilitate their access to the educational process and foster adaptive behaviors. Interventions for Improving Adaptive Behaviors in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders offers a current overview of modern practices regarding the teaching of autistic children. This book seeks to update the current practices for professionals working with autistic children, offer practical information regarding interventions, and provide tools for managing autistic children in critical situations. Covering topics such as autism diagnostic observation schedule, inclusivity in schools, and vocational training for autistic people, this text is essential for teachers, special education teachers, administrators, speech therapists, academicians, researchers, students, and professionals and practitioners involved in the upbringing, education, social, and vocational inclusion of people with ASD.

Les Staves explains recent theories about the early development of understanding numbers, including a breakdown of the processes of learning to count which are largely neglected in the National Curriculum. He also outlines the ‘big ideas’ that are fundamental to the beginnings of mathematical thinking for children with severe and profound learning difficulties, which are vital to carrying out practical mathematical processes.

Book excerpt: Finding a way of simultaneously addressing the sensory, motor, emotional, communicative, cognitive and social needs of children on the autism spectrum can be a real challenge, and choosing from the vast array of options available is a daunting task. This book provides a blueprint for an educational intervention program that is evidence-based, comprehensive in scope and integrative in its approach. Grouping techniques into five categories for discussion, the book examines autism spectrum disorders within a developmental context, and shows that interventions with autistic individuals are not only possible, but can be really successful. Specific intervention strategies and program examples for developing competencies in areas such as joint attention, sensory integration, motor functioning, impulse control, memory, self-awareness, theory of mind and empathy, abstract thinking, problem-solving, social skills and community engagement, are presented. Techniques for dealing with specific behavior problems are also examined, including toileting delays, temper-tantrums, and eating and sleeping problems, amongst many others. This book will be essential reading for families, teachers, and other professionals working with children with autism.
