Book excerpt: This thought-provoking book examines how the accumulated knowledge on past and present environmental issues and risks within Japan can be applied in order to help deliver the transformation to a sustainable and well-being society. The book opens with a series of case analyses on environmental pollution events and pollution-related diseases within the country over the past half century or more. Lessons learned regarding the harm to society are highlighted. Diverse current environmental issues are then explored in detail, ranging from the management of hazardous chemical and asbestos exposure to marine plastic pollution and nuclear disasters. This discussion forms the basis for the final part of the book, which focuses on how progress can be made towards the Sustainable Development Goals set out in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Important insights are also provided into future directions in human ecology and ecotoxicology. The book will be a valuable resource for both new and established researchers as well as for those seeking comprehensive information on environmental/occupational health and health promotion.

Editors Ronald Dodson and Samuel Hammar have carefully kept this popular focus while updating and expanding the topics covered in the first edition with the help of internationally known experts. The editors’ expertise and careful updating set this book apart, making it a comprehensive resource that interlinks diverse specialties. They provide an updated and expanded state-of-the-art discussion of important interdisciplinary factors associated with asbestos-related issues in an easy-to-use reference.

In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for the busy and new practitioner who is building their experience and expertise in asbestos claims. It is not written from the perspective of one side or the other. It is intended to neutrally state the position of the law and procedure in relation to dealing with claims of asbestos-related injury and to give some honest, frank and practical guide in doing so. Invariably, asbestos litigation is complex and time-consuming, and as such it is hoped that this practical guide will be a readily available initial source of reference to assist the practitioner who needs to refresh themselves on a certain topic, or to assist the practitioner in providing a core grounding of the key issues likely to be encountered in their caseload. It has been our privilege to practice in this area of law and it is an even bigger privilege for us to share those experiences and points of understanding with those who read this book. We sincerely hope it provides the type of assistance, and to some degree, re-assurance, that we all need from time to time in our work in this area of litigation. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Jonathan Owen was called to the Bar by Inner Temple in 2004, having completed his undergraduate degree at Magdalen College, Oxford, and the Bar Vocational Course at Nottingham Law School. In addition, Gareth is instructed in inquests and clinical negligence claims. The high value nature and complexity of the cases he deals with means that he has regular contact with medical and engineering experts both in Court and in his case preparation.

It is aimed at businesses holding a alicence to work with asbestos, either repairing or removing asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), supervising such work, holding an ancillary license or providing training on asbestos. Employers who carry out work with asbestos insulation, aasbestos insulating board using their own employees on their premises, who are exempted from the requirement to hold a licence, also need this guidance. The guidance is split into eight chapters, covering different aspects of licensed work with ACM's. It provides an overview of asbestos and its health effects, the law and how to work safely with asbestos.
