Book Synopsis Being Human during COVID by : Kristin Ann Hass
Download or read book Being Human during COVID written by Kristin Ann Hass and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science has taken center stage during the COVID-19 crisis; scientists named and diagnosed the virus, traced its spread, and worked together to create a vaccine in record time. But while science made the headlines, the arts and humanities were critical in people’s daily lives. As the world went into lockdown, literature, music, and media became crucial means of connection, and historians reminded us of the resonance of the past as many of us heard for the first time about the 1918 influenza pandemic. As the twindemics of COVID-19 and racial injustice tore through the United States, a contested presidential race unfolded, which one candidate described as “a battle for the soul of the nation." Being Human during COVID documents the first year of the pandemic in real time, bringing together humanities scholars from the University of Michigan to address what it feels like to be human during the COVID-19 crisis. Over the course of the pandemic, the questions that occupy the humanities—about grieving and publics, the social contract and individual rights, racial formation and xenophobia, ideas of home and conceptions of gender, narrative and representations and power—have become shared life-or-death questions about how human societies work and how culture determines our collective fate. The contributors in this collection draw on scholarly expertise and lived experience to try to make sense of the unfamiliar present in works that range from traditional scholarly essays, to personal essays, to visual art projects. The resulting book is shot through with fear, dread, frustration, and prejudice, and, on a few occasions, with a thrilling sense of hope.

Book Synopsis Language as Hope by : Daniel N. Silva
Download or read book Language as Hope written by Daniel N. Silva and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it feels like we live in a time of seeming hopelessness, this pioneering book illustrates what language can teach us about the practice, logic, and feasibility of hope in the twenty-first century. Silva and Lee highlight how people living in Brazilian urban peripheries, who have grown accustomed to unrelenting prejudice and violence on an everyday basis, use language to survive and imagine futures that are worth aspiring to. In so doing, this book foregrounds how language becomes a matter of survival for these communities. It provides a thorough theorization of how language can produce conditions of hope, moving away from the idea of language merely as a tool of communication and toward something that can meaningfully impact social realities. Innovative and engaging, it is essential reading for researchers and students in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

Book Synopsis Nossa and Nuestra América by : Robert Patrick Newcomb
Download or read book Nossa and Nuestra América written by Robert Patrick Newcomb and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Brazil part of Latin America or an island unto itself? As Nossa and Nuestra Am (c)rica: Inter-American Dialogues demonstrates, this question has been debated by Brazilian and Spanish American intellectuals alike since the early nineteenth century, though it has received limited scholarly attention and its answer is less obvious than you might think. This book charts Brazil's evolving and often conflicted relationship with the idea of Latin America through a detailed comparative investigation of four crucial Latin American essayists: Uruguayan critic Jos (c) Enrique Rod 3, Brazilian writer-diplomat Joaquim Nabuco, Mexican humanist Alfonso Reyes, and S (c)rgio Buarque de Holanda, one of Brazil's preeminent historians. The author argues that Brazil plays a necessary"and necessarily problematic"role in the intellectual construction of Latin America. Nossa and Nuestra Am (c)rica will be of interest to scholars and students of Latin American and Luso-Brazilian literature and ideas, and to anyone interested in rethinking comparative approaches to literary texts written in Portuguese and Spanish.

Book Synopsis Song of Exile by : Joshua Alma Enslen
Download or read book Song of Exile written by Joshua Alma Enslen and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Song of Exile: A Cultural History of Brazil’s Most Popular Poem, 1846–2018 is the first comprehensive study of the influence of Antônio Gonçalves Dias’s “Canção do exílio.” Written in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1843 by a homesick student longing for Brazil, “Song of Exile” has inspired thousands of parodies and pastiches, and new variations continue to appear to this day. Every generation of Brazilian writers has adapted the poem’s Romantic verses to glorify the wonders of the nation or to criticize it via parody, exposing a litany of issues that have plagued the country’s progress over the years. Based on a core of five hundred texts painstakingly gathered over a five-year span, this book catalogs the networks of the poem’s reinvention as pastiche and parody in Brazilian print culture from nineteenth-century periodicals to new media. Mapping the reoccurrences of the original’s keywords and phrases over time, the book uncovers how the poem has been used by successive generations to write and rewrite the nation’s history. This process of reinvention has guaranteed the permanency of “Song of Exile” in Brazilian culture, making it not only the nation’s most popular poem, but one of the most imitated in the world.
