Book excerpt: I felt, intuitively, that luck exists. It’s like capitalism: For better or for worse, and whether you believe in it or not, luck is inescapable. —from As Luck Would Have It While cowriting the books in the Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook series, Joshua Piven came across dozens of people with tremendously compelling stories of triumph (or misfortune), seemingly against all odds and logic. When they were asked what they had in common, invariably their answer was: good luck, or not enough of it. The beneficiary of his own brand of extraordinary luck in publishing, Piven decided to take a closer look at how this phenomenon plays a part in success and survival. As Luck Would Have It offers a fascinating survey of the phenomenon, presented through incredible first- person stories: the swimming pool repairman who had only a hundred-dollar bill to pay for his hot dog, asked for his change in lottery tickets, and won $180 million; the woman who survived a plane crash at sea; the teller who was struck by lightning while at his window inside the bank; the guy who invented the Pet Rock. Weaving the subjects’ own beliefs about their experiences with compelling research on chance, probability, and luck psychology, As Luck Would Have It also includes research on how to prepare for luck, how to deal with it when it arrives, and how to make the choices that will help us benefit from luck. Mesmerizing, by turns hilarious and harrowing, As Luck Would Have It offers a series of scenarios that are at once unimaginable and vividly real.

Download or read book As Luck Would Have It written by Monty Raine and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A weave of mostly joys, some sorrows, and a sprinkling of earthy humour during a muddled childhood. I was orphaned in 1935 at the age of two, and my maternal grandmother became my legal guardian. The main thrust of my childhood memories focuses on home and school life, as well as childhood activities and travel in Englands North East, particularly in County Durham. Of course, the major conflict of World War II was a prevalent factor that affected everyone. Being six when the war started and twelve at the end, observations and experiences of that period are no doubt of interest to a wide readership. Generally, in the telling of my personal recollections, I have also relayed information regarding the working-class fabric prevalent during the thirties and forties. Another facet of the story concerns my attempts to cope with and solve personal problems and inadequacies. Consequently, there is, at times, a reflective, searching tone to the narrative. The final chapter describes the preparation for immigration to Canada and the trip by plane and train to Vancouver, British Columbia. Everyones story is unique, but I believe I have managed to portray a wide-enough spectrum to interest all age groups.

Book excerpt: As Luck Would Have It by Edward Dyson is about the adventures of 26-year-old Lieutenant Robert Holland and his business with little Jimmie Inglis. Excerpt: "There's the taste and the smell in one that was opened yesterday," answered Fryer, with grudging sympathy. "Then for the love of heaven, old man!" Fryer produced the bottle and poured beer into a handleless cup. At the Hut all cups so crippled were promoted—they became tumblers. Holland drank with the air of a man taking his medicine, and groaned aloud."

I heard of some events while they happened but didn’t realize the full extent of how our country and the world changed with the history that took place at the same time. I took a look back and now I want to share with you every day, country and world events that shaped our lives.

Download or read book Forty Steps and Other Stories written by Terrence Murphy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of sixteen short stories is set in Egg Rock, a fictional town north of Boston. They are written in approximate chronological order spanning hundreds of years and are linked not only by the setting but by the reappearance of characters, their ancestors, and descendants. Many are loosely based on local North Shore legends and historical events. Ragnhild is an adviser to Thorvald Eiriksson, son of Erik the Red and brother of Leif, on his voyages to Vinland. He describes their discovery of an idyllic almost island during Thorvalds last days. Ezra Newhall is a jack-of-all-trades who works at Egg Rocks sprawling, jerry-built hotel, called The Castle. On the eve of the Civil War the Castle owners son returns home with a secret that is about to be revealed. Priscilla, a writer seeking peace and quiet in a secluded Egg Rock cottage during World War II, gets swept up by the war in a way she could never anticipate. Mayland, a TV weatherman, and his wife barely survive a devastating fire, the work of an arsonist with a hundred-year grudge. In Forty Steps and Other Stories the reader discovers a unique place that leaves its imprint, for better or for worse, on all who call it home.
Book Synopsis Not Safe After Dark, and Other Stories by : Peter Robinson
Download or read book Not Safe After Dark, and Other Stories written by Peter Robinson and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Robinson’s first collection of short crime fiction to be published in Canada spans his writing career and reveals his impeccable grasp of both mystery and suspense writing. The sixteen stories are set in places as far flung as Inspector Alan Banks’s turf in Yorkshire, Robinson’s own neighbourhood in Toronto, and in Los Angeles and Florida. They also reach back in time: to 1873 to an utopian milltown in northern England, to Thomas Hardy country in 1939, and to a small Yorkshire town during the Second World War. The collection also includes a novella, featuring Robinson’ s celebrated sleuth Inspector Banks. Going Home is a chilling yet profoundly moving tale of just how hard it can be to visit one’s elderly parents, even for only a few days. Four of the stories have won awards: ‘Innocence” won the Crime Writers of Canada Best Short Story Award in 1991, and “The Two Ladies of Rose Cottage” won the Mystery Readers International’s Macavity Award in 1998 and was nominated for both the Agatha and Arthur Ellis awards. “Murder in Utopia” won Robinson his fifth Arthur Ellis Award in 2001, the same year that “Missing in Action” won the Edgar Award.
