Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning factors that are improved by K-12 arts programs include perception, awareness, concentration, uniqueness of thought style, expression, inventiveness and problem solving, confidence and self worth, and motivation. The arts have been taught as an addition to the basic curriculum, not as part of the basic curriculum. This will continue unless we dispel the notion that the cognitive and affective domains are entirely separate from one another. Essential to the development of arts-integrated curricula is each teacher's ability to understand, feel comfortable with, and hence implement program change. Arts programs should be provided for all students, not only the highly talented. Community resources should be a vital component in the developing of arts programming. The development of the arts in Ontario in the past 15 years has been paralleled by an outstanding growth of "artists in the schools" programs. Appendices contain statistics on the growth of the arts in Ontario, examples from curriculum guides showing how the arts can be integrated into the core curriculum, a professional development plan, and descriptions of museum programs. A bibliography is also provided. (RM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring America in the 1980s: Living in the Material World is an interdisciplinary humanities unit that looks at literature, art, and music of the 1980s to provide an understanding of how those living through the decade experienced and felt about the many social changes taking place around them. Through the lens of "identity," it explores why these changes occurred and lends an ear to the voices of the groups that clamored for them. Cultural icons like Madonna and Bill Cosby are examined alongside larger issues such as the end of the Cold War and a changing economic and political identity. The unit uses field-tested instructional strategies for language arts and social studies from The College of William and Mary, as well as new strategies, and it includes graphic organizers and other learning tools. It can be used to complement a social studies or language arts curriculum or as standalone material in a gifted program. Grades 6-8

Book excerpt: Presents an Australian perspective on the issues in expressive arts in early childhood education by authors who are researching, teaching and actively involved in the arts as theatre directors, painter designers, adjudicators, advisers, actors or arts administrators in community organizations at the national and international level. It constitutes a collective look at the arts and young children. This volume covers a wide spectrum of arts areas, including the roles of the teacher as co-worker, collaborator, guide, facilitator and stage-manager; the tertiary educator in indigenous art, improvizational drama, and movement and dance; and the early childhood adviser in national, non-commercial television production. In addition, there is discussion on the national broadcasting standards required for children's commercial television production in Australia, the value of language and literature in the lives of young children and experimental programmes for theatre companies and symphony orchestras.

It offers a conceptual and practical framework for understanding the diverse nature of art and design in education at KS3 and the 14-19 curriculum. It provides support and guidance for learning and teaching in art and design, suggesting strategies to motivate and engage pupils in making, discussing and evaluating visual and material culture. With reference to current debates Learning to Teach Art and Design in the Secondary School explores a range of approaches to teaching and learning, it raises issues, questions orthodoxies and identifies new directions. The chapters examine: ways of learning planning and resourcing attitudes to making critical studies values and critical pedagogy. The book is designed to provide underpinning theory and address issues for student teachers on PGCE and initial teacher education courses in Art and Design. It will also be of relevance and value to teachers in school with designated responsibility for supervision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "Modern African Art" is not an abuse of language. The 20th century has seen, but not properly documented, the birth, development, and maturation of contemporary art in sub-Saharan Africa, an art which was not simply imported in the 1950s but which finds its sources both in colonial realities and in local cultures and civilizations. Anthology of African Art: The Twentieth Century does not propose to document any one African art, but rather to open up this vast but underexplored field to include a diverse theoretical, historical, geographical, and critical map of this dense and ancient region. Contributions by more than 30 international authors recount the birth of art schools in the 1930s, the development of urban design and public art, and the importance of socially-concerned art during the Independence movements. From Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Belgian Congo to Ghana, Senegal, and Angola, through the works of hundreds of artists working in every conceivable medium and context, this anthology manages the continental and unique feat of providing a thorough, expansive, diversified, and fully illustrated history of African art in the 20th century. Since 1991, Paris-based Revue Noire Editions has dedicated itself to the multidisciplinary artistic production of the African continent and the African diaspora. Publishers of the critically-acclaimed An Anthology of African Photography, a comprehensive chronicle of African photography from the mid-1800s to the present, Revue Noire also produces a self-titled magazine devoted to contemporary African art and culture.
