Ce n'est pas par hasard si ceux qui parlent bien du paysage sont le plus souvent les vieux. Cette distance que j'ai recherchée en m'éloignant du sol, eux ils l'ont acquise par la parfaite connaissance de leur terrain. Ces photos sont des kaléidoscopes qui en fonction du moment font passer l'observateur de la rêverie à l'apprentissage le plus détaillé des pratiques d'aménagement. En même temps elles sont une leçon de modestie pour les aménageurs qui mesurent plus facilement que d'autres l'ampleur des moyens mis en œuvre pour façonner les sites. Les multiples sensations que ces images procurent ont été un régal lors des prises de vues, l'auteur n'a pas pu introduire le vent, les odeurs et les mouvements des nuages dans cet ouvrage. Toutefois après les nombreux livres qui ont permis aux voyageurs, pédestres ou automobilistes de mieux connaître leur province, celui-ci ouvre la voie aérienne à une mise en image intermédiaire entre le tourisme et la géographie

Boldly articulating the unspeakable, these writers break the silence imposed by families or ethnic communities and defy the dominant culture that suppresses the voicing of minority experiences. Yet at the same time, they demonstrate how silences—voiceless gestures, textual ellipses, authorial hesitations—can themselves be articulate. Drawing on theoretical works on women's writing, on ethnicity and race, and on postmodernism and history, Cheung takes issue with Anglo-American feminists who valorize speech unequivocally and with revisionist Asian American male critics who attempt to refute Orientalist stereotypes by renouncing silence.
