Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. S. Lewis was a man of many talents: a literary critic, a Medieval and Renaissance scholar, a stimulating lecturer, a prolific writer, a perceptive critic of Western civilization, and the author of highly acclaimed children's books. But he is perhaps best known as the unorthodox defender of orthodoxy, the most popular and influential Christian apologist of his time. His literary skill, his brilliant and wide-ranging mind, and his multi-layered imagination made him a master of communication and gave him insight into what should be communicated. This study of his work inquires what it is about his faith, his view of the world, and his apologetic methods that strikes such a responsive chord in the hearts of unchurched people; and it shows how he made the old ideas of traditional Christianity glimmer and glow with simplicity and attractiveness. Lewis took up his apologetic pen because he felt that most theologians are talking jargon. Any fool can write learned language, he said. The vernacular is the real test. If you can't turn your faith into it, then either you don't understand it or you don't believe it. His books are unusual because he believed that reason is the organ of truth; imagination is the organ of meaning. In the infernal correspondence of Screwtape, the haunting myths of his trilogy of space fiction, and the allegories of the Narnia books, he tries to bring the reader suddenly face to face with transcendental values and existential questions. Richard Cunningham evaluates the different kinds of literature Lewis uses as apologetic instruments, studies the devices and techniques of debate he employs to communicate his faith to unbelievers, and deduces some pertinent principles to help others define and understand the Christian faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a seeming dichotomy in C. S. Lewis's writing. On the one hand we see the writer of argumentative works, and on the other hand we have the imaginative poet. Lewis also found this dichotomy within himself. When he was a rationalist and atheist he found that these two sides of him were pulling in different directions: he believed that his rationalist side could not be reconciled with his imaginative side. Once he became a Christian, he eventually found a means of marrying the two--principally, through story and myth.Within C. S. Lewis studies, there is also a common conception of Lewis as a modern rationalist philosopher, i.e., a rationalist who thinks arguments (and his arguments in particular) are the last answer on the questions he undertakes. Reasoning beyond Reason attempts to take this view to task by placing Lewis back into his pre-modern context and showing that his sources and influences are classical ones. In this process Lewis is viewed through the idea that imagination and reason are connected in an intimate way: they are different expressions of a single divine source of truth, and there is an imagination already present upon which reason works. Lewis's "transpositional" view of imagination implicitly pushes towards a somewhat radical position: the imagination is to be seen as theological in its reliance upon something more than the merely material; it necessarily relies on a transcendent funding for its use and meaning. In other words, the imagination is a well-source for what we might normally label "rational."

Lewis became popular through BBC radio talks, but mostly how this quiet professor in England touched the lives of many through an amazing discipline of personal correspondence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is in the role of remythologizer that C. S. Lewis has been most misunderstood, and it is there that his importance lies. His was the poetic intensity that saw all hell swallowed by a butterfly with no harm done. Of his creation are allegories and myth that express very real elements of life behond understanding or capture for more than a moment. White's 1969 study is the first to examine the entire Lewis corpus and the first to offer such an extensive bibliography. To these invaluable aids for Lewis scholars, White adds his own training in theology and literary criticism and a sensitivity to the complexities of the artist and the religious man. His interpretation of the intricate skeins of belief to be found in Lewis' work make this study as significant to the theological as to the literary world.
