Book Synopsis A New History of Spanish Literature by : Richard E. Chandler
Download or read book A New History of Spanish Literature written by Richard E. Chandler and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1991-09-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, A New History of Spanish Literature has been a much-used resource for generations of students. The book has now been completely revised and updated to include extensive discussion of Spanish literature of the past thirty years. Richard E. Chandler and Kessel Schwartz, both longtime students of the literature, write authoritatively about every Spanish literary work of consequence. From the earliest extant writings though the literature of the 1980s, they draw on the latest scholarship. Unlike most literary histories, this one treats each genre fully in its own section, thus making it easy for the reader to follow the development of poetry, the drama, the novel, other prose fiction, and nonfiction prose. Students of the first edition have found this method particularly useful. However, this approach does not preclude study of the literature by period. A full index easily enables the reader to find all references to any individual author or book. Another noteworthy feature of the book, and one omitted from many books of this kind, is the comprehensive attention the authors accord nonfiction prose, including, for example, essays, philosophy, literary criticism, politics, and historiography. Encyclopedic in scope yet concise and eminently readable, the revised edition of A New History of Spanish Literature bids fair to be the standard reference well into the next century.

Book Synopsis Authorizing Fictions by : Marie Murphy
Download or read book Authorizing Fictions written by Marie Murphy and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critique of the Chilean novelist's A House in the country, studying particularly its representation of the many-faceted concept of `authority'. Casa de campo combines the techniques of traditional novels with the 20th-century intermingling of reality and fiction. The novel's central theme of authority as figured in the discourse, its play between reality and illusion, and its dialogue with literature and society as a whole form the subject of this study. Murphy explores the illusory authority of the narrator in controlling characters' voices, and establishes a parallel with the characters'contradictory power over each other; the ploys of the narrator recall and parody the authoritarian regime which is reflected in the novel. The narrator's authority is further defined in a reading of the novel in which author, narrator, reader and character become linguistic constructs in a textual play, and meanings emerge at variance with the authorized commentary. MARIE MURPHY is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at Loyola College in Maryland.
Book Synopsis Preludios by : Santiago Miralles Huete
Download or read book Preludios written by Santiago Miralles Huete and published by Turner. This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Pragmatics at Work by : María Pilar Navarro Errasti
Download or read book Pragmatics at Work written by María Pilar Navarro Errasti and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of eight articles on the general topic of translation. The common element running through them all is the analysis of samples of tourist literature and their translations, from a pragmatic point of view. The languages concerned are mainly English and Spanish, but examples of German and French texts are also included. The theoretical approaches are multifaceted. Relevance theory, systemic-functional linguistics and discourse analysis are some of the theoretical standpoints taken as a background. The book covers phenomena as varied as translation quality assessment, audience design and perlocutionary effects, dealing also with more specific features like thematic structure, inference and propositional meaning, discourse markers and grammatical metaphor in order to provide a wide range of analyses for the specialised reader.

Book Synopsis Under Three Flags by : Benedict Richard O'Gorman Anderson
Download or read book Under Three Flags written by Benedict Richard O'Gorman Anderson and published by Verso. This book was released on 2005 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sparkling new work, Benedict Anderson provides a radical recasting of themes from Imagined Communities, his classic book on nationalism, through an exploration of fin-de-siecle politics and culture that spans the Caribbean, Imperial Europe and the South China Sea. A jewelled pomegranate packed with nitroglycerine is primed to blow away Manila's 19th-century colonial elite at the climax of El Filibusterismo, whose author, the great political novelist Jose Rizal, was executed in 1896 by the Spanish authorities in the Philippines at the age of 35. Anderson explores the impact of avant-garde European literature and politics on Rizal and his contemporary, the pioneering folklorist Isabelo de los Reyes, who was imprisoned in Manila after the violent uprisings of 1896 and later incarcerated, together with Catalan anarchists, in the prison fortress of Montjuich in Barcelona. On his return to the Philippines, by now under American occupation, Isabelo formed the first militant trade unions under the influence of Malatesta and Bakunin. Anderson considers the complex intellectual interactions of these young Filipinos with the new "science" of anthropology in Germany and Austro-Hungary, and with post-Communard experimentalists in Paris, against a background of militant anarchism in Spain, France, Italy and the Americas, Jose Marti's armed uprising in Cuba and anti-imperialist protests in China and Japan. In doing so, he depicts the dense intertwining of anarchist internationalism and radical anti-colonialism. Under Three Flags is a brilliantly original work on the explosive history of national independence and global politics.

Download or read book José Bergamín written by Nigel Dennis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer, critic, and cultural activist José Bergamín (1895-1983) was unjustly relegated to the sidelines of contemporary Spanish intellectual life for reasons that have more to do with his political dissidence and long periods of exile than with the interest and importance of his written work. This book represents the first attempt to come to terms with that work. Professor Dennis's study focuses on the period 1920-1936, the so-called silver age of Spanish literature, during which Bergamín rose to prominence alongside a group of superlatively gifted writers and friends, among them Frederico Garcia Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Jorge Guillén, and Pedro Salinas. It sets out to explain the nature of the relationship Bergamín had as a critic and prose writer with the major poets of the 1920s and 1930s, and at the same time systematically examines the singularity of his own work as an aphorist, essayist, and dramatist. Professor Dennis also devotes attention to explaining the sense of Bergamín's initiative in founding the important journal Cruz y Raya (1933-1936) and the role this publication played, both culturally and politically, during the troubled years of the Second Republic. This book not only fills a notable gap in our understanding of pre--Civil War literary and intellectual life in Spain, but also lays the foundation for all future research into the work of this fascinating and enigmatic writer.

Book Synopsis Spanish Poetry of the Grupo Poético de 1927 by : Geoffrey Connell
Download or read book Spanish Poetry of the Grupo Poético de 1927 written by Geoffrey Connell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-17 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanish Poetry of the Grupo Poético de 1927 is an anthology of poems by members of Grupo Poético de 1927, an association of poets who sought to detach poetry from non-poetic elements such as narrative, anecdote, political or social preoccupations, or didacticism. Seven poets are represented: Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, Gerardo Diego, Federico García Lorca, Vicente Aleixandre, Rafael Alberti, and Luis Cernuda. This text consists of eight chapters and begins with an introduction to changing trends in poetry in Spain between 1918 and the present. Biographical notes are included to show the effect (or lack of effect) of these movements on the individual poets. Movements such as ultraismo and maestria are discussed, along with the tercentenary of the death of Spanish poet Luis de Góngora, the crisis suffered by the Grupo, and late developments in the poets of the Grupo. The chapters that follow focus on the works of the Grupo poets. This book is written specifically for sixth-formers and undergraduates, as well as anyone with an interest in Spanish poetry.

Book Synopsis The Age of Globalization by : Benedict Anderson
Download or read book The Age of Globalization written by Benedict Anderson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is forged through the travel of ideas across continents—as well as by bombs. The Age of Globalization is an account of the unlikely connections that made up late nineteenth-century politics and culture, and in particular between militant anarchists in Europe and the Americas, and anti-imperialist uprisings in Cuba, China and Japan. Told through the complex intellectual interactions of two great Filipino writers—the political novelist José Rizal and the pioneering folklorist Isabelo de los Reyes—The Age of Globalization is a brilliantly original work on how global exchanges shaped the nationalist movements of the time.
