Book excerpt: An examination of Lee Lozano's greatest experiment in art and endurance—a major work of art that might not exist at all. The artist Lee Lozano (1930–1999) began her career as a painter; her work rapidly evolved from figuration to abstraction. In the late 1960s, she created a major series of eleven monochromatic Wave paintings, her last in the medium. Despite her achievements as a painter, Lozano is best known for two acts of refusal, both of which she undertook as artworks: Untitled (General Strike Piece), begun in 1969, in which she cut herself off from the commercial art world for a time; and the so-called Boycott Piece, which began in 1971 as a month-long experiment intended to improve communication but became a permanent hiatus from speaking to or directly interacting with women. In this book, Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer examines Lozano's Dropout Piece, the culmination of her practice, her greatest experiment in art and endurance, encompassing all her withdrawals, and ending only with her burial in an unmarked grave. And yet, although Dropout Piece is among Lozano's most important works, it might not exist at all. There is no conventional artwork to be exhibited, no performance event to be documented. Lehrer-Graiwer views Dropout Piece as leveraging the artist's entire practice and embodying her creative intelligence, her radicality, and her intensity. Combining art history, analytical inquiry, and journalistic investigation, Lehrer-Graiwer examines not only Lozano's act of dropping out but also the evolution over time of Dropout Piece in the context of the artist's practice in New York and her subsequent life in Dallas.

Book excerpt: A “powerful photo collection” documenting the Black Lives Matter movement and its parallels to the historic fight for civil rights (Publishers Weekly). The fight for equality continues, from 1960 to now. Combining portraits of past and present social justice activists with documentary images from recent protests throughout the United States, #1960Now sheds light on the parallels between the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter movement of today. Shelia Pree Bright’s striking black-and-white photographs capture the courage and conviction of ‘60s leaders and a new generation of activists, offering a powerful reminder that the fight for justice is far from over. #1960Now represents an important new contribution to American protest photography. “Visually arresting . . . activism photography shot across the U.S., from Ferguson, Missouri, to Atlanta to Philadelphia.” —Essence “While millions of cellphone photos are generated each day—some forceful testaments to racial violence and injustice—few possess the grace and quiet lyricism of her images.” —The New York Times Lens blog

Book excerpt: Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries in Atlanta, Georgia celebrates the seventieth anniversary of the founding of its permanent collection and the sixtieth anniversary of the unveiling of the Art of the Negro murals with this commemorative volume. Initially conceived with works selected from annual exhibitions, the collection today constitutes a rare and remarkable assemblage of African-American art. In the Eye of the Muses tells the story of the Atlanta University Art Annuals held between 1942 and 1970, from which the collection stemmed, cataloging the 887 artists who participated and crucially enhancing our understanding of art by African Americans. In an accompanying essay, Hale Woodruff's Art of the Negro mural suite is eloquently explicated by art critic Jerry Cullum. In the Eye of the Muses presents a monumental catalogue of a unique collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper is probably the most important factor to a printmaker. The type used is integral to the finished piece and can determine the whole look of a print. This book aims to alert artists working in both the fields of print and papermaking to the possibilities inherent within each discipline, and how each may complement the other. Making your own paper allows printmakers to have absolute control over their print, often resulting in a work of extraordinary richness and beauty. This book features a range of different papers from around the world, and includes a section focusing on Japanese papermaking - a delicate and highly-prized skill. The author also leads us through the various methods that enable the artist to incorporate found objects (such as petals, seeds, leaves); and to determine the exact colour (using both natural and chemical dyes) and thickness of the sheets.

She is best known for her bold and colorful mixed-media paintings that create visual tapestries in which she examines the intersection of race, class, gender and privilege in both the art world and society at large. This survey exhibition and catalogue, published and organized by the Georgia Museum of Art, include approximately 60 works from the beginnings of her career to the end of it, reflecting her experiences as a painter, printmaker, and weaver. Her large-scale canvases often incorporate African fabrics and semiautobiographical content, which are drawn from her personal odyssey as an artist, her interest in icons in art and world history and her sometimes tenuous engagement with these themes as a woman of color"--
