Book excerpt: The illustration Art Gallery presents 96 glorious pages of original Matania art and prints with over 250 Images (including 125 illustrations not featured in our art book Drawing from History: The Forgotten Art of Fortunio Matania). Born in Naples in 1881, Fortunino Matania trained at his fathers studio and illustrated his first book at the age of 14. He studied in Paris, Milan and London, where he worked on The Graphic. He returned to Italy at the age of 22 for military service in the Bersaglieri. He returned to London where he joined the staff of The Sphere. At the end of World War I Matania illustrated numerous ceremonies in London, including the coronation of Edward VII. During the first half of the 20th century he literally illustrated history as it happened. He was made a Chevalier of the Crown of Italy, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and The Royal Institute of Art. In his studio he maintained an enormous collection of artefacts to aid him in his work. He rarely made preliminary sketches, preferring to begin an elaborate illustration without previous preparation. It was as if he had an exact mental photograph of the art of before he began to paint or draw. His reputation was such that he was visited in his studio in London by Annigoni, Russell Flint and John Singer Sargent and his work is collected and admired by many of todays greatest artists and illustrators.

Book Synopsis Illustrating Armageddon by : Jim Davies
Download or read book Illustrating Armageddon written by Jim Davies and published by Uniform Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortunino Matania is the forgotten genius of illustration. He is perhaps best known in his role providing Great War illustrations such as 'Goodbye Old Man' for The Sphere. Art ran in Matania's blood - his father Eduardo was a respected artist, and his cousin Ugo also contributed to The Sphere. Matania was blessed with a photographic memory, was able to work at great speed, producing illustrations that were unnervingly photographic in their realism.Matania's pictures were superbly accurate and authentic. During the war, he often visited the Western Front, often putting himself in danger to gather material for his work. When not able to do this, he would interview eyewitnesses and take along toy soldiers when he spoke to recovering men in hospital to ensure battle positions were recorded faithfully. Back at his studio, he had an enormous collection of uniforms, weapons and other props to ensure every last detail of his finished picture was correct. This is the first time the entire First World War collection of his works has been published and marks not only a prolific career and exceptional body of work in the art world, it captures much that was written about, but could never have been photographed a century ago yet was etched in the minds of a generation.
Book Synopsis Animals in the Great War by : Lucinda Moore
Download or read book Animals in the Great War written by Lucinda Moore and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tails from the Great War throws a spot light on the experience of creatures great and small during the First World War, vividly telling their stories through the incredible archival images of the Mary Evans Picture Library. The enduring public interest in Michael Morpurgos tale of the war horse reveals an enthusiasm for the animal perspective on war, but what of the untold stories of the war dog, the trench rat or even the ships pig? Through unrivaled access to rarely seen illustrated wartime magazines, books and postcards, discover the sea lions who were trained to detect submarines, and witness the carcass of the 61ft mine-destroying wonder whale. Meet the dog that brought a sailor back from the brink of death, and inspired a Hollywood legend. See how depictions of animals were powerfully manipulated by the propaganda machine on both sides, and how the presence of animals could bring much needed and even lifesaving companionship and cheer amid the carnage of war. As the centenary of the Great War is commemorated all over the world, take a timely journey via the lens of Mary Evans wartime images, and marvel at the often overlooked but significant contribution and experience of animals at war. By turns astonishing, heart-warming and occasionally downright bizarre, Tails from the Great War champions the little-known story of the bison, the chameleon, the canary et al in wartime.
Download or read book True to Life written by Patrick Elliott and published by Gallery of Scotland. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British realist art of the 1920s and 1930s is visually stunning - strong, seductive and demonstrating extraordinary technical skill. Despite this, it is often overshadowed by abstract art. This book presents the very first overview of British realist painting of the period, showcasing outstanding works from private and public collections across the UK. Of the forty artists featured in the show, many were major figures in the 1920s and 1930s but later passed out of fashion as abstraction and Pop Art became the dominant trends in the post-war years. In the last decade their work has re-emerged and interest in them has grown. Interwar realist art embraces a number of different styles, but is characterised by fine drawing, meticulous craftsmanship, a tendency towards classicism and an aversion to impressionism and visible brushwork. Artists such as Gerald Leslie Brockhurst, Meredith Frampton, James Cowie and Winifred Knights combine fastidious Old Master detail with 1920s modernity. Stanley Spencer spans various camps while Lucian Freud's early work can be seen as a realist coda which continued into the 1940s and beyond. Exhibition: Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, Scotland (01.07. - 29.10.2017).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of the entire career of British artist Richard Eurich (1903-1992), a figurative painter of compelling power and often visionary intensity who brought rare imaginative reserves to his depiction of the world around him, as well as to his apprehension of the mysterious and unseen. Eurich was a private man, not given to self-promotion, and as such has not received the widespread attention he deserves. The Art of Richard Eurich locates the artist within the context of 20th-century British art, demonstrating his relevance in all quarters of the art world of the period. Eurich was a draughtsman, landscape painter, teacher, war artist, autobiographer, marine painter extraordinaire, portrait painter, figure painter, satirist, genre painter, visual poet of the beach, and occasional sculptor. His many creative talents are united in this compelling analysis of the man who was responsible for them. Featuring a wide selection of his artworks, from the topographical to the visionary, from the drawn to the painted, this book unspools the narrative of Eurich's life through expertly selected paintings and drawings, and places him in relation to his fellow artists, friends, and contemporaries.
