Book excerpt: Reflection on the history and practice of art history has long been a major topic of research and scholarship, and this volume builds on this tradition by offering a critical survey of many of the major developments in the contemporary discipline, such as the impact of digital technologies, the rise of visual studies or new initiatives in conservation theory and practice. Alongside these methodological issues this book addresses the mostly neglected question of the impact of national contexts on the development of the discipline. Taking a wide range of case studies, this book examines the impact of the specific national political, institutional and ideological demands on the practice of art history. The result is an account that both draws out common features and also highlights the differences and the plurality of practices that together constitute art history as a discipline.

Book excerpt: The recent history of Serbia is tragic in many ways, but it has created an environment in which a number of artists - not interested in the fashion of the day and, for the most part, isolated from the dictates of the art market - struggle to make sense of the largely insane circumstances they were caught in and create images inspired by profound suffering, empathy, isolation, and transience, as well as by the deeply felt threat posed by greediness, corruption, and stupidity, all aspects of human nature and the world in which we live. Experience of a personal - screen-less - connection with life and other human beings, and with the physical and metaphysical aspects of living, is what emerges in their art. Their images are inspired by a deep-seated sense of curiosity and a need for self-exploration, a need to make sense of the world around them. Their art does not transport us into the fantasy world of self-forgetting, but inspires remembering who we are as human beings, with all our strengths and weaknesses, and it illuminates, at least briefly, the nature of life with its blessings and faults. This book presents a small selection of contemporary Serbian artists who have witnessed a fundamental transition from one social context to another, a transformation that happened dramatically and swiftly in Yugoslavia - the country that Serbia was a part of - in the early 1990s, and that unfolded into what many feel is the national disaster Serbia experiences today. All the selected works were made since 1992, created in the traditional techniques of painting, drawing, and printmaking. A few works are executed in a mixed media technique, but they all include painting and are intended to be perceived as paintings. The themes addressed by the artists in this book range from meditating on the creation of the world, the universe, and life, to reflecting on the paradoxes of human life, and thinking about the nature of human connections to the environment, the past, and one another.

Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Serbia by : David A. Norris

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on Serbia’s need to manage change while preserving community identities, a narrative that avoids the common depiction of Serbian culture as a hostile struggle between modernizers supporting foreign models and traditionalists advocating forms of national cultural patrimony. Traditions only function if they are allowed to bend to the necessary modifications demanded by a community’s changing historical circumstances. Tradition and change are two sides of the same coin which Serbia, in its many different incarnations, has experienced over the centuries, protecting its national heritage while borrowing and adapting intellectual and other trends from Byzantine, Ottoman and Western sources. Outside influences have been imposed as a direct result of foreign rule or through more friendly channels of communication, leading to a complex relationship between autochthonous and alien elements in Serbian society and culture. This book argues that the division between the national and international frameworks has often been a false dichotomy, with outside features embedded in domestic symbolic capital and Serbian culture simultaneously determined on local, national, regional and global levels. David A. Norris’s approach offers a new perspective to students, academics and general readers interested in the history of Serbia’s participation in the broad networks of cultural exchange.
