Download or read book Talking with the Clay written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Galleries and shops across the United States are filled with American Indian art. Especially popular is the striking pottery handmade by the Pueblo Indians of the Southwest. Talking with the Clay tells the story of this pottery from the uniquely personal view of the potters themselves. Stephen Trimble interviewed sixty artisans in the pottery-making Pueblo villages, from Taos, New Mexico, to the Hopi reservation in Arizona. Their eloquence fills this book. They speak of 'picking clay' as they would pick flowers, and of the enormous amount of work (fully half their time) necessary to prepare the clay for building their pots. Coil by coil they create jars, bowls, and figurines, and then sand, polish, and paint them. Firing is done outside in a dung-fueled 'kiln' built from scratch for each firing. Trimble shows how Pueblo pottery embodies all the beliefs and values that are central to Pueblo culture. Yet what defines a Pueblo pot is not strictly a matter of tradition, for, as Grace Medicine Flower says of her Santa Clara miniatures, 'Now they call this contemporary; years from now they may call it traditional.' Instead, a Pueblo pot is defined more than anything by the way it feels, and this book captures that feeling in both words and photographs. Talking with the Clay is a joyous, fascinating, and moving book filled with information and insight." -- Back cover

Book Synopsis American Indian Pottery by : Sharon Wirt
Download or read book American Indian Pottery written by Sharon Wirt and published by Blaine [Wash.] ; Surrey, B.C. : Hancock House. This book was released on 1984 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief analysis of Indian Pottery, based on a museum exhibit prepared by the author. Pottery is neither simple nor purely utilitarian. Its development represents a conceptual leap in the history of human invention, involving the transformation of the most elemental materials of human experience--earth, water, and fire. It is both an art and a step in the process of survival. Native American peoples produced a rich diversity of vessels, and expressed their distinctive philosophies and lifestyles through its use, design, and handling. Today, archaeologists study these artifacts for clues to the behavior of the early Americans.

Book excerpt: Celebrates five decades of the Pueblo potter's career through iconic works and personal stories Jody Folwell (b. 1942), a contemporary potter from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, is widely considered among the most significant and influential clay artists of her generation. This tightly focused career retrospective, long overdue, presents iconic works that demonstrate the arc of her groundbreaking artistic output. O' Powa O' Meng showcases Folwell's remarkable contributions, integrating the trailblazing Native American artist within the wider canon of contemporary American art. This fully illustrated exhibition catalog, with contributions from the co-curators and leading Native artists, reveals how Folwell has revolutionized Pueblo pottery, and Native art more broadly, by pushing the boundaries of traditional form, content, and design. She was one of the first Pueblo artists to use pottery for political commentary and advocacy of social justice, and she singlehandedly set a trend, now widely used by younger clay artists, for using writing and designs as direct narrative.
