Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Hand-Book; Sculpture, Architecture, Painting: Official Handbook of Architecture and Sculpture and Art Catalogue to the Pan-American Exposition The act of Congress providing for a federal building and exhibit at the pan-american Exposition states that it is desirable to encourage the holding of the Exposition to fittingly illustrate the marvelous development of the west ern hemisphere during the nineteenth century by a display of the arts, indus tries, manufactures, and products of the soil, mines, and sea. The joint reso lation of Congress previously adopted declared that this development was to be illustrated by a demonstration of the reciprocal relations existing between the American Republics and Colonies. In these declarations the real object of the Exposition was comprehensively ex pressed at the outset, and it has been kept steadily in View. It is clearly re vealed in every feature of the Expo sition: in the architectural scheme, suggestive of the history of so much of this hemisphere; in the restriction of the exhibits to its resources, indus tries, products, inventions, arts, and ideas and in the active participation of practically all of its peoples and coun tries. To have brought all of those peoples together for the first time in the accomplishment of such an object is the crowning achievement of the Exposition. Download or read book Enid Yandell written by Juilee Decker and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louisville-born and nationally renowned sculptor Enid Yandell (1869–1934) was ahead of her time. She began her career when sculpture was considered too physical, too messy, and too masculine for women. Yandell challenged the gender norms of early-twentieth-century artistic practice and became an award-winning sculptor, independent artist, and activist for women's suffrage. This study examines Yandell's life and work: how she grew from a young, Southern dilettante— the daughter of a Confederate medical officer—into a mature, gifted artist who ran in circles with more established male artists in New York and Paris, such as Frederick MacMonnies and Auguste Rodin. At the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, she was one of a select group of women sculptors, known as the White Rabbits, who sculpted the statues and architectural embellishments of the fair. As a result of her success in Chicago, Yandell was commissioned to create a twenty-five foot figure of Pallas Athena for Nashville's Centennial Exposition in 1897. Newspapers hailed it as the largest statue ever created by a woman. Yandell's command of classical subject matter was matched by her abilities with large-scale, figurative works such as the Daniel Boone statue in Cherokee Park, Louisville. In 1898 Yandell was among the first women to be selected for membership in the National Sculpture Society, the first organization of professional sculptors formed in the United States. Presented to coincide with the 150th anniversary of her birth, this study demonstrates the ways in which Yandell was a pioneer and draws attention to her legacy.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Greek Sculpture by : Olga Palagia
Download or read book Handbook of Greek Sculpture written by Olga Palagia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 1513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Greek Sculpture aims to provide a detailed examination of current research and directions in the field. Bringing together an international cast of contributors from Greece, Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, and the United States, the volume incorporates new areas of research, such as the sculptures of Messene and Macedonia, sculpture in Roman Greece, and the contribution of Greek sculptors in Rome, as well as important aspects of Greek sculpture like techniques and patronage. The written sources (literary and epigraphical) are explored in dedicated chapters, as are function and iconography and the reception of Greek sculpture in modern Europe. Inspired by recent exhibitions on Lysippos and Praxiteles, the book also revisits the style and the personal contributions of the great masters.
Download or read book Nocturne written by Hélène Valance and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated look at the vogue for night landscapes amid the social, political, and technological changes of modern America The turn of the 20th century witnessed a surge in the creation and popularity of nocturnes and night landscapes in American art. In this original and thought-provoking book, Hélène Valance investigates why artists and viewers of the era were so captivated by the night. Nocturne examines works by artists such as James McNeill Whistler, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Frederic Remington, Edward Steichen, and Henry Ossawa Tanner through the lens of the scientific developments and social issues that dominated the period. Valance argues that the success of the genre is connected to the resonance between the night and the many forces that affected the era, including technological advances that expanded the realm of the visible, such as electric lighting and photography; Jim Crow-era race relations; America's closing frontier and imperialism abroad; and growing anxiety about identity and social values amid rapid urbanization. This absorbing study features 150 illustrations encompassing paintings, photographs, prints, scientific illustration, advertising, and popular media to explore the predilection for night imagery as a sign of the times.
