Book Synopsis Arriving in Magic by : Adrian G R Scott
Download or read book Arriving in Magic written by Adrian G R Scott and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second collection charts a three-year period in the authors life beginning right after publication of The Call of the Unwritten and into his six-month sabbatical in early 2011 - when he unearthed a new way of looking at his life. In Arriving in Magic he describes a refusal to pass the gap that gates the path unnoticed and this opened many Gateways disclosed in poems like When will you be ready and The Edge of Bleakness. The chapter Path Crossings celebrates the people whose presence has given him a magical awareness of life and death. The Tuscany section recalls a trip in 2010 with the Poet David Whyte and how this alerted him to the magic of everyday life. Unearthings narrates what the commonplace contains when approached with fierce attention. The final section Glad Arrivals reveals the wonder he came to experience, and moves into The Starving Edge challenging the age of austerity; asking more than simply the recreation of a broken system. Ending with an invitation to a Certain Kind of Vow this collection is a personal testament adding to what Goethe calls the praise of what is truly alive and what longs to be burned to death.

Book excerpt: “The most important book to be written in more than 40 years about the rise of Canadian literature... Arrival: The Story of CanLit brims and crackles, in equal measure, with information and energy.” — Winnipeg Free Press A Globe and Mail Top 100 Book National Post 99 Best Books of the Year In the mid-twentieth century, Canadian literature transformed from a largely ignored trickle of books into an enormous cultural phenomenon that produced Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, Mordecai Richler, and so many others. In Arrival, acclaimed writer and critic Nick Mount answers the question: What caused the CanLit Boom? Written with wit and panache, Arrival tells the story of Canada’s literary awakening. Interwoven with Mount’s vivid tale are enlightening mini-biographies of the people who made it happen, from superstars Leonard Cohen and Marie-Claire Blais to lesser-known lights like the troubled and impassioned Harold Sonny Ladoo. The full range of Canada’s literary boom is here: the underground exploits of the blew ointment and Tish gangs; revolutionary critical forays by highbrow academics; the blunt-force trauma of our plain-spoken backwoods poetry; and the urgent political writing that erupted from the turmoil in Quebec. Originally published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, Arrival is a dazzling, variegated, and inspired piece of writing that helps explain how we got from there to here.

Book excerpt: After humans unexplainably left Earth, ancient fish and cephalopods evolved to walk on land and, thousands of years later, rebuilt what the humans had left behind. Flash, a humanoid teenage octopus from the snowy town of Shiverbourn, hasn’t had an easy life, often finding himself with the short end of the stick, bullied, or in a fight. On a walk one seemingly calm and wintry evening, he sees a falling star that looks like it’s headed for Earth. When it crash-lands on an old farmhouse, he can’t help but check it out, and when he thinks he hears a voice crying for help within the home, he runs into the burning inferno, only to find something sinister. A strange glowing-red object, the “star” that had fallen from the sky, draws Flash in and he touches it, forever locking his fate to the demon that manifests thereafter—a dark and evil fiend named Vyrus. Vyrus has not only taken Flash’s appearance as his own but also wants his soul. Though Flash barely escapes Vyrus at the farmhouse, the carnage begins and those he loves are in danger. To stop him, Flash must quickly uncover humanity’s greatest secret because Vyrus is coming and he will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. . . . Terrifying, gritty, and action-packed, The Advent’s Arrival is the first book in the heart-pounding Advent series

It’s just another Thanksgiving for the Sullivans—until the walls disappear and they discover they are being transported to Arenia, a place where game rules are real and their Earthen ability to reincarnate grants them unlimited potential. Or it would, if the celestial administrator in charge of their case hadn’t mixed up longitude and latitude and sent the wrong family. Oops. Too bad he already faked their deaths. Now scattered throughout the Arenian wilderness and armed only with their Tomes—books containing all of their skills, accomplishments, and quests—the family members must discover a strength they didn’t know they had if they are going to survive long enough to find each other. Note: Contains some profanity and a turkey, but not a profane turkey. Personally, I’m fine with profane turkeys, but if that’s where you draw the line, you should know that there are none in this book. In fact, I’m going to promise you no profane turkeys for the entire series. That’s my gift to you.

Book Synopsis Shakespearean Arrivals by : Nicholas Luke
Download or read book Shakespearean Arrivals written by Nicholas Luke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this distinctive study, Nicholas Luke explores the abiding power of Shakespeare's tragedies by suggesting an innovative new model of his character creation. Rather than treating characters as presupposed beings, Luke shows how they arrive as something more than functional dramatis personae - how they come to life as 'subjects' - through Shakespeare's orchestration of transformational dramatic events. Moving beyond dominant critical modes, Luke combines compelling close readings of Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear with an accessible analysis of thinkers such as Badiou, Žižek, Bergson, Whitehead and Latour, and the 'adventist' Christian tradition flowing from Saint Paul through Luther to Kierkegard. Representing a significant intervention into the way we encounter Shakespeare's tragic figures, the book argues for a subjectivity which is not singular or abiding, but perilous and leaping.
Download or read book Coming to Shore written by Marie Mauzä and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northwest Coast of North America was home to dozens of Native peoples at the time of its first contact with Europeans. The rich artistic, ceremonial, and oral traditions of these peoples and their preservation of cultural practices have made this region especially attractive for anthropological study. Coming to Shore provides a historical overview of the ethnology and ethnohistory of this region, with special attention given to contemporary, theoretically informed studies of communities and issues. The first book to explore the role of the Northwest Coast in three distinct national traditions of anthropology- American, Canadian, and French-Coming to Shore gives particular consideration to the importance of Claude Levi-Strauss and structuralism, as well as more recent social theory in the context of Northwest Coast anthropology. In addition contributors explore the blurring boundaries between theoretical and applied anthropology as well as contemporary issues such as land claims, criminal justice, environmentalism, economic development, and museum display. The contribution of Frederica de Laguna provides a historical background to the enterprise of Northwest Coast anthropology, as do the contributions of Claude Levi-Strauss and Marie Mauze. Marie Mauze is a senior researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. Her books include Present Is Past: Some Uses of Tradition in Native Societies. Michael E. Harkin is a professor of anthropology at the University of Wyoming and the editor of Reassessing Revitalization Movements: Perspectives from North America and the Pacific Islands (Nebraska 2004). Sergei Kan is a professor of anthropology and Native American studies at Dartmouth College and author of Memory Eternal: Tlingit Culture and Russian Orthodox Christianity through Two Centuries.

Download or read book Medinfo written by Marius Fieschi and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 998 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental challenge for medical informatics is to develop and apply better ways of understanding how information technologies and methods can help support the best care for every patient every day given available medical knowledge and resources. In order to provide the most effective healthcare possible, the activities of teams of health professionals have to be coordinated through well-designed processes centered on the needs of patients. For information systems to be accepted and used in such an environment, they must balance standardization based on shared medical knowledge with the flexibility required for customization to the individual patient. Developing innovative approaches to design and build evidence-based careflow management systems is essential for providing the knowledge management infrastructure of health care organizations that seeks to increase performance in delivering high quality care services by efficiently exploiting available resources. Parallel challenges arise in the organization of research at the biological and clinical levels, where the focus on systematically organizing and supporting processes of scientific inquiry by novel informatics methods and databases are in their very early stages. These Proceedings of Medinfo 2004 demonstrate the base of knowledge medical informatics professionals will collectively draw upon in the years ahead to meet these challenges and realize opportunities.
