Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international seminar’s fifth edition, dedicated to the theme Desenho (...) Cidade (...) Corpo, Habitando a Terra (Drawing [...] City [...] Body, Inhabiting the Earth) was held as a joint activity between: this C.I.A.U.D./F.A./U.Lisboa Research Project, the University of São Paulo, represented by the Maria Antônia University Centre, and the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora. Its objectives were threefold: To discuss how Drawing in/of the City and the elements that identify it (geographical area, inhabitants, natural landscape and/or built landscape; present, desired or memorable facts and data) are represented and identified through the presence and/or action of the body, in the form of gestures, movements, interventions, displacements or permanence. To problematise the association between Drawing and City from the starting point of the perception of the Body, assuming this mediation as a condition for the particular construction of that relationship. To identify the presence of the Body in the Representations/Drawings of the City, submitting this event or phenomenon to analysis, aiming for cognitive production. The contributions will be of interest to artists, academics and professionals in the fields of drawing and the arts, architecture, sociology, philosophy, urbanism and design.

This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Following on from the two previous books published within project “On Being With-it”: Pedagogical Experiments on Territory on Architecture Schools and A Forward-Looking Dialogue on the Experience of Learning through Territory, both published in 2017, this third book presents nine texts by foreign professors and researchers who visited the School of Architecture at the University of Minho (EAUM) over the past few years, or with whom EAUM City and Territory professors share a disciplinary proximity. The main goal of this book is to contribute to the questioning and enhancement of the pedagogical practice of what we can call “being with-places”. Recalling that in learning one can summon people and places whose physical, social or organizational non-proximity could justify a distancing.

Book excerpt: "Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus are adamant when they say it is very interesting to work outside their home country of Portugal, but it is especially stimulating to return. In interviews, however, they have often pointed to the problems they are faced with when working in Portugal: lack of planning, overly restrictive regulations, very limited market for experimenting with new materials and systems, and vanishing craftsmanship. Yet they are positive that these challenges contribute to architectures continued improvement. This guidebook is both a reference to the numerous built works in Portugal by Aires Mateus and an itinerary spanning 21 cities, from north to south" -- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte.
Book Synopsis Constructing Identity in Contemporary Architecture by : Peter Herrle
Download or read book Constructing Identity in Contemporary Architecture written by Peter Herrle and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global spread of uniform modes of production and cultural values has been accompanied by a dissemination of stereotypes of "modern" architecture styles almost everywhere around the globe. Paradoxically, the reverse process has also emerged: In some countries, the elites feel the necessity to counterbalance the "loss of identity" and defend their own cultures against the "intruding" forces of globalization. What started as a defensive notion has developed into a more progressive attempt to re-create what has allegedly been lost. This trend is being strongly expressed in discourses about architecture in countries of the South. Who are the actors feeling compelled to "construct" new identities? How are these new identities in architecture created in various parts of the world? And, which are the ingredients borrowed from various historical and ethnic traditions and other sources? These and other questions are discussed in five case studies from different parts of the world, written by renowned scholars from Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, India and Singapore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. How to teach and learn architectural history? To answer this question, eight important panoramic books on Brazilian architecture, produced at different times in the twentieth century and early twenty-first, are revisited. The organizer and her research team explored the possibility of combining quantitative measurement extracted from these books with interpretations of a more subjective nature, revealing complex, non-intuitive, and unexpected paradoxes, shaping some of the "canon's voids". The book presents a methodological set of tools for the critical revision of repeated ideas and axioms converted into canons, allowing for questioning, and opening new paths. The tables and graphs produced in the book are freely interpreted and counterpointed by the views of eighteen contributing authors, ranging from young researchers to renowned guest experts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major retrospective to emerge from the archive of Paulo Mendes da Rocha, shining important new light on his work One of the most acclaimed architects working in Brazil since the mid-twentieth century, Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021) began building in the 1950s, championing an approach often associated with "Brutalism" but expanding well beyond it. He is widely recognized for having transformed the urban imprint of São Paulo. His best-known buildings include the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture, remarkable for its engagement with the site and its daring structure; the renovation of the Pinacoteca do Estado, with audacious metallic inserts; and outstanding private houses, starting with his own. In 2006, he became the second Brazilian architect, after Oscar Niemeyer, to win the Pritzker Prize. This retrospective catalogue is the first major publication on Mendes da Rocha since the establishment of his archive at the Casa da Arquitectura in 2021. A team of international scholars provides a comprehensive view of the architect's trajectory and the collective dimension of his work, along with thematic essays. Mendes da Rocha's identity as a South American architect interested in the geographic relation between nature and culture is underlined. The book's contributors explore his concern with the social and anthropogenic impact of the continent's development, as well as its colonial past and postcolonial future. The volume centers around twelve of his most important buildings and reprints two important essays on Mendes da Rocha's work. This will be an essential book on this significant figure of global modernism and will point the way for future scholarship on Mendes da Rocha and the architecture of contemporary Brazil. Distributed for Casa da Arquitectura-Portuguese Centre for Architecture Exhibition Schedule: Casa da Arquitectura, Porto (May 26, 2023-February 25, 2024)
Book Synopsis Architecture as Civil Commitment: Lucio Costa's Modernist Project for Brazil by : Gaia Piccarolo
Download or read book Architecture as Civil Commitment: Lucio Costa's Modernist Project for Brazil written by Gaia Piccarolo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture as Civil Commitment analyses the many ways in which Lucio Costa shaped the discourse of Brazilian modern architecture, tracing the roots, developments, and counter-marches of a singular form of engagement that programmatically chose to act by cultural means rather than by political ones. Split into five chapters, the book addresses specific case-studies of Costa’s professional activity, pointing towards his multiple roles in the Brazilian federal government and focusing on passages of his work that are much less known outside of Brazil, such as his role inside Estado Novo bureaucracy, his leadership at SPHAN, and his participation in UNESCO’s headquarters project, all the way to the design of Brasilia. Digging deep into the original documents, the book crafts a powerful historical reconstruction that gives the international readership a detailed picture of one of the most fascinating architects of the 20th century, in all his contradictory geniality. It is an ideal read for those interested in Brazilian modernism, students and scholars of architectural and urban planning history, socio-cultural and political history, and visual arts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of the collection "Latin America: Thoughts" presents a collection of Abilio Guerra's texts that gravitate around a birthmark of modernism in Brazil. At issue is the belief (found in texts, narratives and speeches from 1920-1940) in an alternative modern action – where culture and nature play leading roles – which because of its discursive effectiveness metamorphoses into real features of Brazilian modern architecture.
