Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Clair lies in a narrow valley rich with anthracite resources. The town was born around 1831, during the great hard coal boom in northeast Pennsylvania. Over the years the town expanded to surrounding areas or patches known as Arnouts Addition, Wadesville, Dark Water, New Castle, Mount Laffee, Crow Hollow, Ravensdale, Lorraine, Diener's Hill, East Mines, and Mill Creek. People came from these areas to work in the mines, railroads, and supporting industries. As the demand for coal increased, the town grew to a high point of 7,000 residents. The decline of the coal industry also brought the decline of the railroads, and the population of St. Clair fell. The photographs in Around St. Clair show the fortitude of its people; the notable residents who have gained national acclaim for their achievements in the labor movement, medical field, and professional sports; and the diverse cultures that make up the town.

Book excerpt: Political corruption, abortion, and dead body discovered inside a trunk at Hudson depot. The summer of 1871 in New York City is hot and humid. The city is gripped by two seemingly separate events. The first is the discovery of a beautiful young woman’s body stuffed inside a trunk at the Hudson railway depot. The second involves Victor Fowler, grand sachem of Tammany Hall, and the “Boss” of what is popularly referred to as “The Ring.” This is a small clique that includes Governor “Dandy” Archibald Krupp, Fowler’s man at the state assembly in Albany; Mayor Thomas “The Prince” Emery, an opportunist of the worst variety; “Slimy” Bob James, the cunning and sly city comptroller; and Isaac “The Wizard” Harrison, the City Chamberlain, who is possibly the most treacherous of the “Ring Rascals.” In Evil of the Age, New York journalist Charles St. Clair, tracking down the story of Lucy Maloney, the “kept woman” found murdered and stuffed in a trunk at the Hudson railway depot, moves from the mansions of Fifth Avenue to the brothels of SoHo to the seedy and dangerous saloons on Water Street. St. Clair soon uncovers Lucy’s connection to a ring of abortionists and to Madame Philippe, a wealthy woman who known as Madam Killer. St. Clair confronts Madame Philippe at the Tombs prison, where she awaits the hangman’s noose for Lucy’s murder. St. Clair believes her to be innocent and sets out to prove it, discovering deceit at the highest levels of political power and the shocking secret of the “Ring Rascals.” Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry M. Ward examines the formative years of the Department of War as a microcosm of the development of a centralized federal government. The Department of War was unique among early government agencies, as the only office that continued under the same administrator from the time of the Confederation to government under the Constitution. After the peace was established with Britain, citizens were suspicious of keeping a standing army, but administrator Benjamin Lincoln's efficient administration did much to dispel their fears. Henry Knox was the second Secretary, and he faced the problem of maintaining peace on the frontier, as his tiny army twice lost battles with Indians. It was only after the Whiskey Rebellion and Shay's Rebellion, that the young nation fully comprehended the importance of a maintaining a national military.

Book excerpt: This book takes an in-depth look at every aspect of American Indian life—food, dress, customs, and more—during the almost 300 years of conflict with Anglo-Americans. From the colonial period to the end of the 19th century, from King Phillip's war to the Wounded Knee Massacre, fighting between the American Indians and the U.S. government created upheaval in the everyday lives of American Indians, affecting everything from trade and food to marriage, housing, and family life. The continuous power struggle between distinct cultures created the backdrop for the creation of the United States we know today, as well as the infancy of American foreign policy. Daily Life during the Indian Wars will immerse readers in the true stories of a wide range of American Indian peoples as they fought to preserve everything they had and held dear—their traditions, their lands, and their identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Reforming the Rogue comes a full-length Classic Regency Romance novel celebrating the witty and romantic world first introduced by Jane Austen. Celestine Simons was of good family, but an untimely death and a shortage of funds forces the homely spinster to take a position as governess at the estate of Lord Langlow and his wife. Never one to bemoan her change in fortune, Celestine is content to spend her days raising and overseeing their children, knowing in her heart she will never have any of her own. Lord St. Claire Richmond, Langlow’s brother, is a rogue and seducer, content to while away his days pursuing pleasure—and driving his brother and sister-in-law mad by reducing their female staff to lovelorn fools with his flirtations. When he learns on his annual Christmas visit that the drab Celestine was hired as governess solely to thwart his dalliances, he devises a scheme to both stir her heart and spite his family’s interfering ways. But as his game unfolds, the cunning St. Claire discovers this conquest may be more challenging than expected when the thoughtful and intelligent Celestine begins to fire an ache in his own heart. And what began as an amusement to give the plain, timid miss an innocent thrill is turning into much more, as St. Claire realizes she may be the one giving him the thrill—and teaching him in a way only a governess can that real beauty lies beneath the surface and that true love is often found where you least expect it.
