Book excerpt: Sumner County, like many of the counties of Tennessee, finds itself ever-expanding, growing from a predominantly agricultural community once marked by expansive horse farms, a colorful patchwork of sharecroppers' fields, and extravagant antebellum homes into a county full of modern-day luxuries and conveniences. Over the past 100 years, curvy, dusty farm roads eventually evolved into paved highways and interstates, and "mom and pop" stores gave way to supermarkets and expansive malls. Around Gallatin and Sumner County Volume II continues to explore and celebrate the Sumner County of yesteryear. In this volume, readers will enjoy strolling through old neighborhoods, meeting local celebrities such as "Tippy" Crutcher, Fred Astair's stand-in, holding their breath as they marvel at Crash Brown's stunt drivers, busting up illegal moonshine stills on the outskirts of town, walking through the doors of the growing industries, and gazing at grand buildings torn down in the name of progress. Through these fascinating images and their stories, this book shares a more personal side of Gallatin and Sumner County that cannot always be found in history books--a side that celebrates the everyday lives and activities of its citizens.

Download or read book Hub Perdue written by John A. Simpson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong-armed devastating spitball pitcher from rural Tennessee who once won 16 games with the Boston Braves, Hub Perdue is better remembered today as one of the clown princes of the Deadball Era. Often compared with fellow player-comedians Germany Schaefer, Nick Altrock, and Rabbit Maranville, Perdue had a quick wit and a rebellious streak that amused teammates but sometimes led to conflicts with management and umpires. ("Mix 'em up!" manager George Stallings had told him, encouraging the weak-hitting pitcher to take his at-bats more seriously; Perdue, a right-hander, dutifully took his strikeouts from alternating sides of the plate.) His penchant for the subversive--he was also a players' union representative who freely dispensed advice on contracts and negotiation--might in fact have curtailed what had been a promising big league career. But his antics in the majors and minors became the stuff of legend, known as "Hublore."
Book Synopsis Ancestors of Timothy W Hogan Vol. 2 Family Groups by : Diana J Muir
Download or read book Ancestors of Timothy W Hogan Vol. 2 Family Groups written by Diana J Muir and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancestors of Timothy Hogan can be traced from Greene County, Tennessee before the Civil War to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, England where his ancestors were Lords and Ladies of ancient England and Wales. Many lines go back to the ancient leaders of Wales including Rhys aps Griffith and to the Merovingian Kings and Queens of Normandy, France. Timothy's Swedish line, which came to Iowa in the USA, came directly from Sweden where they can be traced back to the sea kings of Uppsala, Sweden in about 500 AD. Continuing back some of his European ancestors, they can be traced to Seleucus Nicator in ancient Syria, the father of Helen of Troy. It is easy to imagine that some of the members of the Hogan Family retained the ambition and traits of their ancient ancestors. Many of his forefathers in Colonial America were Freemasons and instrumental in forming the burgeoning American Nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the second volume in Louis Rasmussen's distinguished series dealing with passenger arrivals at the port of San Francisco between 1850 and 1875 (see also San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists Volume I 1850-1864] and San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists Volume III 1851-1852]). In the absence of official port records--which were destroyed by the fire in 1940--this ambitious work attempts a reconstruction of passenger arrivals from newspapers and journals.Volume II is based on completely different sources than the first volume in the series, which covered the years 1850-1864, and it encompasses an additional 16,500 passenger arrivals at San Francisco Bay during the 20-month period from April 1850 to November 1851. Most of these individuals, in the author's words, had come to the West in search of the golden goose who had laid the golden egg. Most would not find it, of course, but would remain in California or migrate to the Oregon territory to take up other commercial or agricultural pursuits. The passengers named in Volume II came from all parts of the United States, as well as from Europe, although the majority were probably from the East Coast of the U.S. The passenger lists themselves are arranged in chronological order, and, typically, each passenger list is introduced with the following notations: name of ship, type of ship, port of embarkation, date of arrival, name of captain, description of cargo, and notes concerning the passage (date of departure, ports of call, length of voyage, and names of passengers who died en route, with their places of residence and dates of death). The list of passengers follows and sometimes identifies accompanying family members. Rounding out the volume are the author's introduction, a key to abbreviations, a list of the shipping lines that sailed/steamed on the Pacific, and superlative name and subject indexes.
