Book excerpt: The laser Raman scattering technique shows potential as a diagnostic method for determining the chemical and thermodynamic state of high-temperature gases. To investigate the utility of this technique for shock-tube diagnostics, and to validate the method at known elevated temperatures, vibrational Raman intensities were measured behind an incident shock wave. Intensity history data through the wave front, vibrational excitation times of oxygen in air, along with temperature and density measurements for oxygen and nitrogen in air were obtained over a range of postshock conditions. The measured densities and temperatures were found to be in good agreement with shock-wave theory. An excitation time measurement also agreed well with shock-tube data obtained with other diagnostic methods. In general, the results indicated that the Raman scattering technique was accurate at elevated temperatures and should prove useful in determining the thermochemical state of gases in continuous flows as well as in shock tubes and other impulse facilities.

The equation predicts the transition location fairly well for 48 ballistics range tests for cones without ablation and for 40 flight tests for cones with ablation ranging from zero to large. The equation is applicable for cones in supersonic or hypersonic flight. The experimental data cover a range of local Mach numbers at transition from 2.8 to 14.7 and a range of the ratio of local wall to local stream temperature at transition from .074 to 1.43.

Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. Detailed boundary layer profiles and the variation of radiative intensity are obtained for the sonic flow over a flat plate at sea level, wherein SF6 is injected into the boundary layer through the surface, and CO2 laser radiation at 10.6 micrometers is incident on the plate downstream of the injection. The studies were conducted on a flat nozzle wall for a nominal Mach number of 4.9, at momentum thickness Reynolds numbers from 7,000. to 58,000. and at wall-to-adiabatic-wall temperature ratios of 1.0, 0.8 and 0.25. Complete profile measurements were taken with Pitot pressure probes and conical-equilibrium and fine-wire temperature probes. Furthermore, the wall shear and surface heat transfer were measured directly with a skin-friction balance and a heat-transfer gage, respectively. (Author Modified Abstract).

A series of experiments was conducted using both a supersonic half nozzle and a conventional flat plate for which the nozzle throat and flat plate leading edge can be temperature controlled. The supersonic nozzle provided a favorable upstream pressure gradient together with a controlled thermal history at the throat. The flat plate provided upstream temperature control with no pressure history. Velocity and temperature profile and heat-transfer measurements were made in a downstream region of zero-pressure-gradient and constant wall temperature. (Modified author abstract).
