Book excerpt: A former racist skinhead examines aspects of his past: Where did the hate begin? How did a teenaged alcoholic become a central figure in the white power movement of the late 80s and early 90s? What happened to bring about his drastic change of mind and heart? With a collection of reflective essays, disturbing flashbacks, and an interview, My Life After Hate scrubs scabs off the festering wound of racism, then soothes with the essential wisdom of forgiveness and compassion. ..".a reckoning between who a person was and who a person can be. The drastic changes of Arno's perspective and the effects thereof clearly demonstrate that how we experience reality is up to us-that we can always choose compassion over aggression." -Bashir Malik, Artist, Milwaukee Community Elder "My Life After Hate is the new standard of brutally honest. It is sure to invoke strong reactions and personal moral inventories. The recounting of past hate oozes ugliness, but it is a necessary evil if others are to understand the true meaning of the word 'change.'" -Sammy Rangel, Mental health and AODA therapist, former gang leader
Download or read book Angels at the Arno written by and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 1995-01-05 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of photos made by Lindbloom in Florence between 1979 and 1987, using a Diana camera--virtually a child's toy with a plastic lens (the story of which is explained in an afterword). The photos have an intriguing strangeness and intimacy. 10x9.25" Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.The Florence revealed in Eric Lindbloom's Angels at the Arno is almost startling in its intimacy and quiet solitude. Lindbloom's view of the city - rendered exclusively through the plastic lens of a Diana camera, virtually a child's toy - brings this venerable city to new life and light. With unabashed subjectivity and an offbeat, oneiric sensibility, Lindbloom conveys his sense of an unveiled Florence, filled with views striking for the beauty they contain rather than for the history they suggest.

Book Synopsis Arno and the MiniMachine by : Seymour Chwast
Download or read book Arno and the MiniMachine written by Seymour Chwast and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prescient and humorous tale of a boy's futuristic life gone haywire with the interruption of ... nature. GO BACK TO YOUR CLASS, says the MiniMachine. The brightly moving thing flutters into Arno's hand. It feels warm. Attached to a foot is a label, reading: BIRD. Two hundred years in the future, Arno's pre-programmed, machine-controlled day takes an unexpected turn when nature intercedes. Arno wakes each morning when his personalized "MiniMachine" tells him it's time. The MiniMachine squawks at him all day: "Eat your Instant Mealtime," "Wait for the school jet," "Go to your electric tuba lesson," "Do not step off the Power Path"..... But Arno's curiosity and a little yellow bird lead Arno off his pre-programmed track. "Go Back to Your Class!" squawks the MiniMachine with increasing alarm. Arno's mischievousness will delight young readers. And Seymour Chwast's illustrations, including his Seuss-like mechanical inventions, are both charmingly old-fashioned and presciently futuristic. A gentle corrective to our infatuation with electronics, Arno and the MiniMachine is a sweet reminder of the joy of nature and following one's own path.
Book Synopsis The Gift of Our Wounds by : Arno Michaelis
Download or read book The Gift of Our Wounds written by Arno Michaelis and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The powerful story of a friendship between two men—one Sikh and one skinhead—that resulted in an outpouring of love and a mission to fight against hate. One Sikh. One former Skinhead. Together, an unusual friendship emerged out of a desire to make a difference. When white supremacist Wade Michael Page murdered six people and wounded four in a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin in 2012, Pardeep Kaleka was devastated. The temple leader, now dead, was his father. His family, who had immigrated to the U.S. from India when Pardeep was young, had done everything right. Why was this happening to him? Meanwhile, Arno Michaelis, a former skinhead and founder of one of the largest racist skinhead organizations in the world, had spent years of his life committing terrible acts in the name of white power. When he heard about the attack, waves of guilt washing over him, he knew he had to take action and fight against the very crimes he used to commit. After the Oak Creek tragedy, Arno and Pardeep worked together to start an organization called Serve 2 Unite, which works with students to create inclusive, compassionate and nonviolent climates in their schools and communities. Their story is one of triumph of love over hate, and of two men who breached a great divide to find compassion and forgiveness. With New York Times bestseller Robin Gaby Fisher telling Arno and Pardeep's story, The Gift of Our Wounds is a timely reminder of the strength of the human spirit, and the courage and compassion that reside within us all.

Book Synopsis Arno Schmidt's Zettel's Traum: An Analysis (Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Culture) by : Volker Max Langbehn
Download or read book Arno Schmidt's Zettel's Traum: An Analysis (Studies in German Literature, Linguistics, and Culture) written by Volker Max Langbehn and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2003 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arno Schmidt (1914-1979) is considered one of the most daring and influential writers of postwar Germany; the Germanist Jeremy Adler has called him a "giant of postwar German literature." Schmidt was awarded the Fontane Prize in 1964 and the Goethe Prize in 1973, and his early fiction has been translated into English to high critical acclaim, but he is not a well-known figure in the English-speaking world, where his complex work remains at the margins of critical inquiry. Volker Langbehn's book introduces Schmidt to the English-speaking audience, with primary emphasis on his most famous novel, Zettel's Traum. One reviewer called the book an "elephantine monster" because of its unconventional size (folio format), length (1334 pages and over 10 million characters), and unique presentation of text in the form of notes, typewritten pages, parallel columns, and collages. The novel narrates the life of the main characters, Daniel Pagenstecher, Paul Jacobi and his wife Wilma, and their teenage daughter Franziska. In discussing the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, the four engage in the problems connected with a translation of Poe. Langbehn's study investigates how literary language can mediate or account for the world of experiences and for concepts. Schmidt's use of unconventional presentation formats challenges us to analyze how we think about reading and writing literary texts. Instead of viewing such texts as a representation of reality, Schmidt's novel destabilizes this unquestioned mode of representation, posing a radical challenge to what contemporary literary criticism defines as literature. No comprehensive study of Zettel's Traum exists in English.Volker Langbehn is assistant professor of German at San Francisco State University.
