Book excerpt: “Arlen’s Gun” centers on an alienated and angry young man from the worst streets of Baltimore. The Vietnam War is raging and, virtually certain to be drafted, he’s persuaded by a friend to avoid that fate by volunteering for the Air Force. Both end up in Vietnam, his friend in a comfortable administrative job while he becomes a gunner on an AC-47 gunship. His attitude isolates him from the crew members, and the nature of the gunship’s mission isolates him from the reality of war itself until his plane is shot down and crash lands in no-man’s land. It is the monsoon season, bad weather grounds rescue helicopters, and the crew is rescued by an Army unit. Events strand him with his rescuers, soon caught up in desperate battles where the airman gradually discovers in the motley group a path to brotherhood.

Book excerpt: When I retired, I wanted to write about my experiences. The problem was that I didnt know the first think about writing. I was capable when writing reports. I could wow you with my PowerPoint presentation, but writing a book was new. So, what could be so hard. I had spent many hours on airplanes reading a variety of books. I launched into my writing career. As this was my first book, I was willing to spend money to have my manuscript professionally edited. The result damaged my ego for some time. Everything was out of order. My paragraphing was pitiful. My character development was non-existent. Added to this was two pages of rules. Some of these I had never heard of. This was worse than a F grade on a term paper. It was no grade. The effort was rejected. I set about to rewrite the whole thing. Rules were followed. The story followed a time line. My characters became people. My story was placed in the time of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). I put together an ideal CIA team. First was the timeless professional. Add the technical cyber geek. Then came the all-American football player and last but not least you have the beautiful blonde. A spy thriller, a love story, and the sought after WMD makes for an exciting reading pleasure. Try it, you will like it.

Book excerpt: The award-winning author of Babes in the Woods and The Rottweiler brings us another gripping Inspector Wexford novel. A lump of concrete dropped deliberately from a little stone bridge over a relatively unfrequented road kills the wrong person. The driver behind is spared. But only for a while... One particular member of the local press is gunning for the Chief Inspector, distinctly unimpressed with what he regards as old-fashioned police methods. But Wexford, with his old friend and partner, Mike Burden, along with two new recruits to the Kingsmarkham team, pursue their inquiries with a diligence and humanity that make Ruth Rendell’s detective stories enthralling, exciting and very touching.

Book excerpt: Malefactors is defined as “those who commit an offense against the law”, or more simply put, “one who does ill toward another”. This collection of short stories from Jim Wilsky is chock full of them. Tales that are all different, yet all the same. The locales and characters range from rural to urban. Office buildings, swamps, wealthy estates and corn fields are some of the places. The people range from folks with money to flat broke, from those who have a lot on the line to those who have nothing to lose, old and young alike. There are stone cold killers to good guys and those in between. Those walking on that shaky bridge, that thin tightrope that connects good and evil. The stories all share the same common ingredients though. Plots that are brutal, chaotic, desperate, vengeful and violent. These pages paint the rage and burning fire that dwells within almost everyone but only surface and re-erupt in some. From guns, to knives, to swords and bare hands, this collection will push all the right buttons for crime fiction readers. These specially selected stories touch every base. So, buckle up and read on.

Winterbotham and Russ Winterbotham (as well as the pseudonyms “J. Harvey Bond” for mysteries and “Franklin Hadley”)—began publishing in the late 1920s, though his didn’t make his science fiction debut until 1935, when “The Star that Would not Behave” appeared in Astounding. He published prolifically in most of the top magazines of the day, before settling into an action-adventure niche. From the fiction magazines, he moved into comics (writing for Red Ryder), comic strips (he penned “Chris Welkin, Planeteer” from its start in 1951 into the 1960s), and Big Little books for the Whitman Publishing Company (he wrote at least 60, including the Maximo the Amazing Superman series). All the while, he maintained his full-time job as fiction editor for Scripps-Howard NEA news service. In those days, newspapers published fiction, and many had a weekly insert that included full-length novels. Although well regarded, his novels—which appeared under pseudonyms—failed to attract much fan attention, and he is largely forgotten today. Nevertheless, modern readers will enjoy his better-than-average writing and fun, action-adventure plots—often with clever twists. Included in this volume are: ORIDIN’S FORMULA THE MINUS WOMAN DEAD MAN’S PLANET THE THOUGHT-MEN OF MERCURY THE MONSTER THAT THREATENED THE UNIVERSE LONESOME HEARTS A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE THE WHISPERING SPHERES GENESIS! If you enjoy this volume, search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press MEGAPACK" to see the 400+ other entries in the series, covering science fiction, modern authors, mysteries, westerns, classics, adventure stories, and much, much more!

Book excerpt: The novel "Hate and Fury" is the authors's first work in a foreign genre. As we read the novel, we feel the alternating tense moments, the emotions that historical periods evoke in human destinies, we see the causes, roots, scale of complex and tragic events, and get acquainted with the deeds and struggles of patriotic sons. The author tries to reveal the character of the work, special officer Michael Grady, to reveal his character, including his spiritual world as a human, and personality, to show the physological aspects that make him constantly proactive in the ups and downs of life. The work reflects the difficulties faced by the hero in his childhood and adolescence, his great leap into life, career advancement, worries, desires, dreams, love, suffering in this way, betrayal, evil, crime, and punishment. The hero's victory is the culmination of the work. But this victory is not easily won by him. In the first part of the work, readers get acquainted with the artistic image of a hero who served in a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan with his group during a difficult and complicated period. The main goal of the hero is to fight against the enemy to ensure the security of the civilian population. He is not alone in this struggle, and around him there are enough brave, friendly, principled comrades-in-arms. But the hero is always in tension. On the one hand, he is always worried about the horrors of war, the lives lost, on the other hand, the longing for people he loved, whom he left behind in his homeland and for some reason could not hear about them for days.

Book excerpt: A journey to Florida's coast becomes an inescapable nightmare in this supernatural thriller from international bestselling author Michael Koryta. Arlen Wagner has seen it in men before: a trace of smoke in their eyes that promises imminent death. He is never wrong. When Arlen awakens on a train one hot Florida night and sees death's telltale sign in the eyes of his fellow passengers, he tries to warn them. Only 19-year-old Paul Brickhill believes him, and the two abandon the train, hoping to escape certain death. They continue south, but soon are stranded at the Cypress House -- an isolated Gulf Coast boarding house run by the beautiful Rebecca Cady -- directly in the path of an approaching hurricane. The storm isn't the only approaching danger, though. A much deadlier force controls the county and everyone living in it, and Arlen wants out -- fast. But Paul refuses to abandon Rebecca to face the threats alone, even though Arlen's eerie gift warns that if they stay too long they may never leave. From its chilling beginning to terrifying end, The Cypress House is a story of relentless suspense from "one of the best of the best" (Michael Connelly).
