Book excerpt: Increasing traffic volumes on Arizona's State Highway System are contributing to the increased frequency and duration of incident-caused rural highway closures, amplifying the need to effectively divert traffic around these situations. Through this research project, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in collaboration with other state agencies, is addressing the need for a statewide, seamless and homogenous set of current alternate routes to supplement the existing detours developed by ADOT District offices. To accomplish this goal, this project developed an alternate route database in close cooperation with the ADOT Districts and Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZ DPS). The alternate route electronic database and workbook will be distributed both internally within ADOT and to DPS as a controlled document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous project (AZ-485), Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) embarked on an effort that provided statewide detour plans for major links of Arizona roadways in print format. That project resulted in a thick binder of letter-size closure/detour descriptions. That resource was clearly limited in its functionality as well as by its bulk. Yet the effort was remarkable in that it yielded specific and proactive detour plans on a statewide basis--thanks to the close cooperation of ADOT and the Department of Public Safety (DPS). This second phase of the solution to the closure/detour problem was launched in April 2001 with the focus on enhancing the accumulated detour plans by providing a user-friendly computer application. This new resource would be called ARIS, the Alternate Routing Information System. It would be supported by a map interface, supplemental roadway network data, the capability of generating new ad hoc closure/detour combinations, and presentation of the library of earlier approved detour plans. This phase is markedly different in that it attempts to put interactive detour generation capability on the desktops of at least 40 potential users. This research effort presents the effects of several strategies for computer application design and delivery.

Book Synopsis Strategic Plan for Statewide Deployment of Intelligent Transporattion Systems in Arizona by : Henry B. Wall
Download or read book Strategic Plan for Statewide Deployment of Intelligent Transporattion Systems in Arizona written by Henry B. Wall and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the methodology and results of a study to develop a strategic plan to deploy Intelligent Transportation Systems(ITS) throughout rural Arizona. Needs were identified by various stakeholders at Rural ITS Workshops, focus group meetings, and regional Coalition meetings around the state. These needs were then matched, where possible, to one or more of the 36 Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) User Services defined in the National Program Plan and Advanced Rural Transportation Systems (ARTS) program. Using the National ITS Architecture as a guide, a conceptual system architecture was developed for Arizona, which includes integration with other architectures developed for previous strategic plans in the state.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A challenge for the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will be to use a variety of practical, relevant congestion mitigation options in appropriate, collaborative and innovative ways to address current and future congestion problems. To meet this challenge, ADOT has undertaken the development of a comprehensive Congestion Mitigation Methodology for the implementation of a consistent and sustained approach to assess and manage the growing congestion problem on all elements of the state highway system. This effort has resulted in the development of practical strategies to solve Arizona's mobility and congestion problems. A significant step in the development of the Congestion Mitigation Methodology was building a consensus among traffic management stakeholders on effective definitions for congestion and for congestion management. Input on the definitions and state of the practice in congestion mitigation came from a national survey of Metropolitan Planning Organizations and State Departments of Transportation and from a statewide conference on congestion mitigation. The research project has produced recommendations for systematically quantifying congestion on Arizona's highways using a state-specific congestion index, and has also produced a database of available congestion mitigation strategies in Microsoft Access.

Download or read book Roadway Incident Diversion Practices written by Walter M. Dunn and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to officials of municipal, regional, and statewide transportation and law enforcement agencies who are responsible for roadway incident diversion practices. It will also be of interest to others who interact with these agencies to achieve a better understanding of the processes, barriers, and technologies associated with alternate route plan development and deployment. This report presents state-of-the-practice information about the development and implementation of roadway incident diversion practices. It documents specific trends in the practice, and in examining individual practices, identifies unique plans, processes, and technologies from which other agencies may find useful applications. This TRB report addresses a broad list of topics associated with roadway incident diversion and profiles successful incident diversion practices, as reported by surveyed agencies. In particular, it focuses concern on alternate route plans for random incidents, those resulting in nonrecurring congestion.
