Book Synopsis Elementary Algebra by : Laura Bracken
Download or read book Elementary Algebra written by Laura Bracken and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA offers a practical approach to the study of beginning algebra concepts, consistent with the needs of today's student. The authors place special emphasis on the worked examples in each section, treating them as the primary means of instruction, since students rely so heavily on examples to complete assignments. Many of the applications (both within the examples and exercises) are also uniquely designed so that students have an experience that is more true to life--students must read information as it appears in headline news sources and extract only the relevant information needed to solve a stated problem. This promotes the text's focus on developing better study habits, problem solving and critical thinking skills along with orienting students to think and reason mathematically. Through Elementary Algebra, students will not only be better prepared for future math courses, they will be better prepared to solve problems and answer questions they encounter in their own lives. Book Synopsis From Classical to Modern Algebraic Geometry by : Gianfranco Casnati
Download or read book From Classical to Modern Algebraic Geometry written by Gianfranco Casnati and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book commemorates the 150th birthday of Corrado Segre, one of the founders of the Italian School of Algebraic Geometry and a crucial figure in the history of Algebraic Geometry. It is the outcome of a conference held in Turin, Italy. One of the book's most unique features is the inclusion of a previously unpublished manuscript by Corrado Segre, together with a scientific commentary. Representing a prelude to Segre's seminal 1894 contribution on the theory of algebraic curves, this manuscript and other important archival sources included in the essays shed new light on the eminent role he played at the international level. Including both survey articles and original research papers, the book is divided into three parts: section one focuses on the implications of Segre's work in a historic light, while section two presents new results in his field, namely Algebraic Geometry. The third part features Segre's unpublished notebook: Sulla Geometria Sugli Enti Algebrici Semplicemente Infiniti (1890-1891). This volume will appeal to scholars in the History of Mathematics, as well as to researchers in the current subfields of Algebraic Geometry.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Abstract Algebra by : W. Keith Nicholson
Download or read book Introduction to Abstract Algebra written by W. Keith Nicholson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the Third Edition ". . . an expository masterpiece of the highest didactic value that has gained additional attractivity through the various improvements . . ."—Zentralblatt MATH The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Abstract Algebra continues to provide an accessible approach to the basic structures of abstract algebra: groups, rings, and fields. The book's unique presentation helps readers advance to abstract theory by presenting concrete examples of induction, number theory, integers modulo n, and permutations before the abstract structures are defined. Readers can immediately begin to perform computations using abstract concepts that are developed in greater detail later in the text. The Fourth Edition features important concepts as well as specialized topics, including: The treatment of nilpotent groups, including the Frattini and Fitting subgroups Symmetric polynomials The proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra using symmetric polynomials The proof of Wedderburn's theorem on finite division rings The proof of the Wedderburn-Artin theorem Throughout the book, worked examples and real-world problems illustrate concepts and their applications, facilitating a complete understanding for readers regardless of their background in mathematics. A wealth of computational and theoretical exercises, ranging from basic to complex, allows readers to test their comprehension of the material. In addition, detailed historical notes and biographies of mathematicians provide context for and illuminate the discussion of key topics. A solutions manual is also available for readers who would like access to partial solutions to the book's exercises. Introduction to Abstract Algebra, Fourth Edition is an excellent book for courses on the topic at the upper-undergraduate and beginning-graduate levels. The book also serves as a valuable reference and self-study tool for practitioners in the fields of engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics.
Book Synopsis Learning Abstract Algebra with ISETL by : Ed Dubinsky
Download or read book Learning Abstract Algebra with ISETL written by Ed Dubinsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most students in abstract algebra classes have great difficulty making sense of what the instructor is saying. Moreover, this seems to remain true almost independently of the quality of the lecture. This book is based on the constructivist belief that, before students can make sense of any presentation of abstract mathematics, they need to be engaged in mental activities which will establish an experiential base for any future verbal explanation. No less, they need to have the opportunity to reflect on their activities. This approach is based on extensive theoretical and empirical studies as well as on the substantial experience of the authors in teaching astract algebra. The main source of activities in this course is computer constructions, specifically, small programs written in the mathlike programming language ISETL; the main tool for reflections is work in teams of 2-4 students, where the activities are discussed and debated. Because of the similarity of ISETL expressions to standard written mathematics, there is very little programming overhead: learning to program is inseparable from learning the mathematics. Each topic is first introduced through computer activities, which are then followed by a text section and exercises. This text section is written in an informed, discusive style, closely relating definitions and proofs to the constructions in the activities. Notions such as cosets and quotient groups become much more meaningful to the students than when they are preseted in a lecture.

Book Synopsis Algebra, Student Solutions Manual by : Guadalupe I. Lozano
Download or read book Algebra, Student Solutions Manual written by Guadalupe I. Lozano and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the Student Solutions Manual to accompany Algebra: Form and Function, 2nd Edition. Algebra: Form and Function, 2nd Edition offers a fresh approach to algebra that focuses on teaching readers how to truly understand the principles, rather than viewing them merely as tools for other forms of mathematics. Meant for a College Algebra course, Algebra: Form and Function, 2nd Edition is an introduction to one of the fundamental aspects of modern society. Algebraic equations describe the laws of science, the principles of engineering, and the rules of business. The power of algebra lies in the efficient symbolic representation of complex ideas, which also presents the main difficulty in learning it. It is easy to forget the underlying structure of algebra and rely instead on a surface knowledge of algebraic manipulations. Most students rely on surface knowledge of algebraic manipulations without understanding the underlying structure of algebra that allows them to see patterns and apply it to multiple situations: McCallum focuses on the structure from the start.
Download or read book Algebra written by William G. McCallum and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2018-06-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebra: Form and Function was designed based on the fundamental goal for a student to foster understanding of algebraic structure- that is, an understanding of how the arrangements of symbols allows us to predict, for example, the behavior of a function or the number of solutions to an equation. Mastering algebraic structure enables students to read algebraic expressions and equations in real-life contexts, not just manipulate them, and to choose which form or which operation will best suit the context. It facilitates being able to translate back and forth between symbolic, graphical, numerical, and verbal representations. By balancing practice in manipulation and opportunities to see the big picture, Algebra: Form and Function offers a way for teachers to help students achieve real mastery of algebra.
