Book Synopsis Towards an Arithmetical Logic by : Yvon Gauthier
Download or read book Towards an Arithmetical Logic written by Yvon Gauthier and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an original contribution to the foundations of logic and mathematics and focuses on the internal logic of mathematical theories, from arithmetic or number theory to algebraic geometry. Arithmetical logic is the term used to refer to the internal logic of classical arithmetic, here called Fermat-Kronecker arithmetic and combines Fermat’s method of infinite descent with Kronecker’s general arithmetic of homogeneous polynomials. The book also includes a treatment of theories in physics and mathematical physics to underscore the role of arithmetic from a constructivist viewpoint. The scope of the work intertwines historical, mathematical, logical and philosophical dimensions in a unified critical perspective; as such, it will appeal to a broad readership from mathematicians to logicians, to philosophers interested in foundational questions. Researchers and graduate students in the fields of philosophy and mathematics will benefit from the author’s critical approach to the foundations of logic and mathematics.

Download or read book Arithmetic written by Garrett Gladle and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arithmetic factors into our lives on a daily basis, so it's hard to imagine a world without the six basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, raising to powers, and finding roots. Readers will get a solid overview of arithmetic, while offering useful examples of how they are used in routine activities, such as social media applications. It reinforces Common Core math standards, including understanding basic math concepts and how they apply to students' daily lives and challenges. A history of arithmetic helps provide a contextual framework for the course of its development and the practical needs that drove its use.

Book Synopsis The Shaping of Arithmetic after C.F. Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae by : Catherine Goldstein
Download or read book The Shaping of Arithmetic after C.F. Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae written by Catherine Goldstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-03 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication, C.F. Gauss's Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (1801) has acquired an almost mythical reputation, standing as an ideal of exposition in notation, problems and methods; as a model of organisation and theory building; and as a source of mathematical inspiration. Eighteen authors - mathematicians, historians, philosophers - have collaborated in this volume to assess the impact of the Disquisitiones, in the two centuries since its publication.

Book Synopsis Frege, Dedekind, and Peano on the Foundations of Arithmetic (Routledge Revivals) by : Donald Gillies
Download or read book Frege, Dedekind, and Peano on the Foundations of Arithmetic (Routledge Revivals) written by Donald Gillies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this reissue contains a critical exposition of the views of Frege, Dedekind and Peano on the foundations of arithmetic. The last quarter of the 19th century witnessed a remarkable growth of interest in the foundations of arithmetic. This work analyses both the reasons for this growth of interest within both mathematics and philosophy and the ways in which this study of the foundations of arithmetic led to new insights in philosophy and striking advances in logic. This historical-critical study provides an excellent introduction to the problems of the philosophy of mathematics - problems which have wide implications for philosophy as a whole. This reissue will appeal to students of both mathematics and philosophy who wish to improve their knowledge of logic.

Book Synopsis From Kant to Hilbert Volume 1 by : William Bragg Ewald
Download or read book From Kant to Hilbert Volume 1 written by William Bragg Ewald and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-04-21 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason is widely taken to be the starting point of the modern period of mathematics while David Hilbert was the last great mainstream mathematician to pursue important nineteenth cnetury ideas. This two-volume work provides an overview of this important era of mathematical research through a carefully chosen selection of articles. They provide an insight into the foundations of each of the main branches of mathematics—algebra, geometry, number theory, analysis, logic and set theory—with narratives to show how they are linked. Classic works by Bolzano, Riemann, Hamilton, Dedekind, and Poincare are reproduced in reliable translations and many selections from writers such as Gauss, Cantor, Kronecker and Zermelo are here translated for the first time. The collection is an invaluable source for anyone wishing to gain an understanding of the foundation of modern mathematics.
Book Synopsis Arithmetic and Ontology by : Philip Hugly
Download or read book Arithmetic and Ontology written by Philip Hugly and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents a lively exchange between five philosophers of mathematics. It also introduces a new voice in one central debate in the philosophy of mathematics. Non-realism, i.e., the view supported by Hugly and Sayward in their monograph, is an original position distinct from the widely known realism and anti-realism. Non-realism is characterized by the rejection of a central assumption shared by many realists and anti-realists, i.e., the assumption that mathematical statements purport to refer to objects. The defense of their main argument for the thesis that arithmetic lacks ontology brings the authors to discuss also the controversial contrast between pure and empirical arithmetical discourse. Colin Cheyne, Sanford Shieh, and Jean Paul Van Bendegem, each coming from a different perspective, test the genuine originality of non-realism and raise objections to it. Novel interpretations of well-known arguments, e.g., the indispensability argument, and historical views, e.g. Frege, are interwoven with the development of the authors' account. The discussion of the often neglected views of Wittgenstein and Prior provide an interesting and much needed contribution to the current debate in the philosophy of mathematics.
