Book Synopsis Differential Geometric Methods in Theoretical Physics by : Ling-Lie Chau
Download or read book Differential Geometric Methods in Theoretical Physics written by Ling-Lie Chau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After several decades of reduced contact, the interaction between physicists and mathematicians in the front-line research of both fields recently became deep and fruit ful again. Many of the leading specialists of both fields became involved in this devel opment. This process even led to the discovery of previously unsuspected connections between various subfields of physics and mathematics. In mathematics this concerns in particular knots von Neumann algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, integrable non-linear partial differential equations, and differential geometry in low dimensions, most im portantly in three and four dimensional spaces. In physics it concerns gravity, string theory, integrable classical and quantum field theories, solitons and the statistical me chanics of surfaces. New discoveries in these fields are made at a rapid pace. This conference brought together active researchers in these areas, reporting their results and discussing with other participants to further develop thoughts in future new directions. The conference was attended by SO participants from 15 nations. These proceedings document the program and the talks at the conference. This conference was preceded by a two-week summer school. Ten lecturers gave extended lectures on related topics. The proceedings of the school will also be published in the NATO-AS[ volume by Plenum. The Editors vii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS We would like to thank the many people who have made the conference a success. Furthermore, ·we appreciate the excellent talks. The active participation of everyone present made the conference lively and stimulating. All of this made our efforts worth while.

Book Synopsis Twenty Years Of Bialowieza: A Mathematical Anthology: Aspects Of Differential Geometric Methods In Physics by : S Twareque Ali
Download or read book Twenty Years Of Bialowieza: A Mathematical Anthology: Aspects Of Differential Geometric Methods In Physics written by S Twareque Ali and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-27 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume marks the twentieth anniversary of the Bialowieza series of meetings on Differential Geometric Methods in Physics; the anniversary meeting was held during July 1-7, 2001. The Bialowieza meetings, held every year during the first week of July, have now grown into an annual pilgrimage for an international group of physicists and mathematicians. The topics discussed at the meetings, while within the broad area of differential geometric methods in physics, have focused around quantization, coherent states, infinite dimensional systems, symplectic geometry, spectral theory and harmonic analysis. The present volume brings together a set of specially invited papers from leading experts in the various fields, who have contributed to these meetings and whose work represents a cross-section of the topics discussed. Consequently, rather than a proceedings volume, this book embodies the spirit of the Bialowieza workshops and reflects their scientific tenor, as a tribute to the completion of two decades of a shared scientific experience. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in the area of differential geometric methods in physics, as it gives interesting glimpses into the present state of the art from different points of view.

Book Synopsis Elliptic Curves and Modular Forms in Algebraic Topology by : Peter S. Landweber
Download or read book Elliptic Curves and Modular Forms in Algebraic Topology written by Peter S. Landweber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small conference was held in September 1986 to discuss new applications of elliptic functions and modular forms in algebraic topology, which had led to the introduction of elliptic genera and elliptic cohomology. The resulting papers range, fom these topics through to quantum field theory, with considerable attention to formal groups, homology and cohomology theories, and circle actions on spin manifolds. Ed. Witten's rich article on the index of the Dirac operator in loop space presents a mathematical treatment of his interpretation of elliptic genera in terms of quantum field theory. A short introductory article gives an account of the growth of this area prior to the conference.
