Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic Exercises for First Book Classes The following exercises are intended to furnish prim ary teachers with a simple, practical and intelligible method of presenting number to little children. As Arithmetic is taught not only for its practical utility, but also as a means of mental discipline, it follows that in order to develop thought and awaken interest, the teach er must present the subject with an orderliness of ar rangement and a unity of purpose in order to secure clear, definite conceptions on the part of the pupil, and enable him to make rapid and thorough progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Course in Algebra His book may be used by students who have completed a course in arithmetic but who have not previously studied algebra. The statements of all principles and the explana tions of all examples have been made as simple and direct as possible. Emphasis has been placed upon the reason for each step taken, whether it be in the proof of a principle or in the explanation of an exercise. Such proofs of principles as may be omitted by the student when taking the subject for the first time have been plainly marked. The examples are all new and have not been copied from other text-books. There are exercises for written solu tion, for mental solution, and 423 explanatory examples, a total of examples. These examples have been so constructed and graded as to contain a great variety of number-combinations. Thus the student is constantly drilled in arithmetic. These problems can be used also for variety, when pupils are required to go over the grade work a second time. The language used is simple, clear, and precise. The study of mathematical relations should not be complicated by difficulties of language, nor by distractions introduced through the content of the problems. The problems here given are within the experiences of the children, and are true to conditions of everyday life. The problems present a gradual increase in difficulty an arrangement that conduces to steady progress and ease Of comprehension. The topics are treated in the order suggested by the most approved courses of study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Arithmetic on the Inductive Plan: Including Oral and Written Exercises The first lessons are devoted to instruction in counting, reading, and writing numbers up to twenty. Immediately following these, are lessons upon Addition, in which abundant practice is given in combining numbers. The fundamental processes of Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, are treated upon a plan similar to that exemplified in Addition, including besides, numerous ex amples combining two or more of the previous processes. The lessons on Fractions are so simple and yet so thorough, that the pupil is enabled to read, write, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions when the processes are not very complex. The work on Written Arithmetic, which follows, is believed to be simple, thorough, and practical; and the brief and practical treat ment of the various classes of denominate numbers in common use, makes the work quite comprehensive within its scope. With the hope that the features of this book will commend it to all intelligent persons, and that instruction in the rudiments of arithmetic may be rendered more interesting and effective through its agency, it is confidently offered to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walton and Holmes's Arithmetics First Book This book is the first of a series designed to give a complete course of study in arithmetic for elementary grades beyond the second year in school. Part I is intended for a review of such ground as the pupil should have covered before beginning the use of a text-book. It takes up counting to one hundred and the combinations of numbers to twenty as a number limit. In this part of the book, oral and mental exercises predominate. Part II introduces more advanced written and oral work, and makes steady progress in measurements, denominate numbers, and simple fractions. It is designed to serve the teacher as a guide and the pupil as a text-book for the advance work in numbers to be taken in the third school year. Recent changes in thought and practice as to numbers and number teaching have been met in, what is believed to be a rational manner. Diagrams, illustrations, measurements, etc., have been liberally employed. The idea that notions of num ber and numerical Operations should be acquired from the concrete has been given full recognition. Measuring and com parison of magnitudes and values are constantly employed and are made the basis for abstract number concepts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Elementary Arithmetic: Uniting Oral and Written Exercises Fon several years past there has been an increasing demand for a two-book series of Arithmetics, and various attempts to meet this demand have been made, but so far unsuccessfully. The most common device has been the selection of two books from a series composed of three or more books, and the presen tatien of the treatises, thus selected, as a complete two-book series. In several instances a thin little primary, with simple lessons for the first two or three years of school instruction, has been united with an advanced treatise, nearly every page of which presents matter too difficult for children under twelve years of age. In other instances the primary lessons have been wholly discarded, and the second and a higher book have been made a two-book series. Both of these expedients have proved unsatisfactory, for the obvious reason that the first book either ends too low or begins too high. The use of a thin primary as a first book brings the pupils to the second or higher book before they have the capac ity or the training requisite to master such a treatise, and the use of a second book for a first begins the course at too high a point, and makes necessary several years of oral instruction, much of which is poor, or is given with unnecessary labor on the part of both teachers and pupils. The lessons in number, adapted to the first two years of school life, can best be given orally, but exclusive oral instruction in the third, fourth, and fifth years involves an amount of blackboard and slate work which is a severe tax on the eyes and nerves of little children. The Elementary Arithmetic aims to avoid both of these errors. It covers the ground of the first two books of the author's three-book series, but does not present the first lessons so fully. It takes it for granted that pupils who have been in school two or three years do not need to spend months in learning to count, read, and write numbers from 1 to 100. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Algebra IN preparing this book, the author had especially in mind classes in the upper grades Of grammar schools, though the work will be found equally well adapted to the needs of any classes of beginners. The ideas which have guided in the treatment Of the subject are the following: The study of algebra is a continuation of what the pupil has been doing for years, but it is expected that this new work will result in a knowledge of general truths about numbers, and an in creased power of clear thinking. All the differences between this work and that pursued in arithmetic may be traced to the introduction of two new elements, namely, negative numbers and the representation of numbers by letters. The solution of problems is one of the most valuable portions of the work, in that it serves to develop the thought-power of the pupil at the same time that it broadens his knowledge of numbers and their relations. Powers are developed and habits formed only by per sistent, long-continued practice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermediate Arithmetic His work has been prepared to meet a demand for a book that contains, within brief compass, an elementary course in arithmetic. It is also designed to be an introduction to the more thorough and exhaustive treatment of the science which is given in the author's standard arithmetic. The first part of the book contains exercises arranged in such a manner that they secure an easy and natural development of the ideas of numbers, and they afford sufficient practice to fix the results in memory. Ready knowledge of results can be secured only by frequent repetition and thorough drill, and the lessons that have been prepared are believed to be admirably adapted to produce expertness in computing, without sacrificing interest in the subject through constant practice with abstract numbers. When the more systematic treatment of the science is presented, the pupil is led by natural, progressive, and logical steps to an understanding of the definitions, principles, processes, and rules, before he is required to state them; consequently, all definitions, principles, and rules are but the expressions of what he already knows. It is evident, therefore, that the plan pursued in the work will develop in the student the habit of investigating for himself any subject which may claim his attention, and this is an extremely important part of proper teaching.
