This book was released on 1983 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Given the need to monitor what is happening to Canada's land resources, the Canada Land Use Monitoring Program in the Lands Directorate of Environment Canada has already initiated projects dealing with land use changes in the urban-centred regions and prime resource lands of the country. Beyond these urban-fringe and unique areas, there are still vast areas of rural resource lands which are also undergoing various changes consequent upon urbanization and economic development. In this report, based on an appreciation of the nature of rural land use change, a conceptual framework for reviewing sampling strategies and a review of selected existing sampling programs in other countries, recommendations are made on the broad structure of a rural land use monitoring program for Canada and on the necessary next steps required prior to eventual implementation"--Abstract.
Book Synopsis Demands On Rural Lands by : Chris Cocklin
Download or read book Demands On Rural Lands written by Chris Cocklin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning for the use of rural lands in the developed countries of the world has become an increasingly contentious process as resources become more limited and conflicting needs grow stronger. The critical questions are "Which is more important—agriculture, livestock production, recreation, industry, or urban housing?" and "Who decides priorities and responsibilities for use?" The capacity of the land to meet all of the demands placed upon it, without serious environmental disruption, has become a major concern for all. Recognizing the exigencies of the situation, the contributors define and evaluate the theoretical and methodological frameworks within which rural land-use problems can be analyzed. In , the discussions focus on the identification and characterization of resources and competing users of rural lands, stressing that a careful articulation of the problem is essential to effective planning. is aimed at developing appropriate information bases useful in planning for the problems related to the management of these rural lands. The discussion of policy options for rural resource use in builds upon the material in the previous two sections to provide a framework for an analysis of rural resource use.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The key issue examined is the impact of CMHC infrastructure assistance on the nature, form, and location of development vis-a-vis the rural land resource. Assessment of impact includes both financial leverage (CMHC funding causing infrastructure development to occur) and on-the-ground leverage (the CMHC funded infrastructure influencing the form and location of urban development). This evaluation is from the point of view of impacts on the use and management of the land resource under the guidelines of the Federal Policy on Land Use (Canada/Government of Canada, 1981)"--Executive Summary, p. v.
Book Synopsis Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats by : Brenda McComb
Download or read book Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats written by Brenda McComb and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of so many unprecedented changes in our environment, the pressure is on scientists to lead the way toward a more sustainable future. Written by a team of ecologists, Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide provides a framework that natural resource managers and researchers can use to design monitoring programs that will benefit future generations by distilling the information needed to make informed decisions. In addition, this text is valuable for undergraduate- and graduate-level courses that are focused on monitoring animal populations. With the aid of more than 90 illustrations and a four-page color insert, this book offers practical guidance for the entire monitoring process, from incorporating stakeholder input and data collection, to data management, analysis, and reporting. It establishes the basis for why, what, how, where, and when monitoring should be conducted; describes how to analyze and interpret the data; explains how to budget for monitoring efforts; and discusses how to assemble reports of use in decision-making. The book takes a multi-scaled and multi-taxa approach, focusing on monitoring vertebrate populations and upland habitats, but the recommendations and suggestions presented are applicable to a variety of monitoring programs. Lastly, the book explores the future of monitoring techniques, enabling researchers to better plan for the future of wildlife populations and their habitats. Monitoring Animal Populations and Their Habitats: A Practitioner’s Guide furthers the goal of achieving a world in which biodiversity is allowed to evolve and flourish in the face of such uncertainties as climate change, invasive species proliferation, land use expansion, and population growth.

Book excerpt: This technical reference applies to monitoring situations involving a single plant species, such as an indicator species, key species, or weed. It was originally developed for monitoring special status plants, which have some recognized status at the Federal, State, or agency level because of their rarity or vulnerability. Most examples and discussions in this technical reference focus on these special status species, but the methods described are also applicable to any single-species monitoring and even some community monitoring situations. We thus hope wildlife biologists, range conservationists, botanists, and ecologists will all find this technical reference helpful.

Book Synopsis Marginal Land Utilization and Potential, Kent County, New Brunswick by : Maurice Mandale
Download or read book Marginal Land Utilization and Potential, Kent County, New Brunswick written by Maurice Mandale and published by Lands Directorate, Environment Canada. This book was released on 1984 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The agricultural use of Canada's land varies greatly from region to region in its intensity, vitality and economic prospects. During the past few decades there have been major shifts in agricultural land use in Canada; a significant element has been the abandonment of large areas of land formerly in agriculture, principally in eastern Canada (McCuaig and Manning, 1982). Bibliographic research by the Lands Directorate has shown considerable concern related to the abandonment of farmland, the decline of entire regions as much of the population leaves, and the failure to adapt to new methods of using and managing the land resource in extensive rural areas of eastern Canada (Beattie, Bond and Manning, 1981)"--Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With unprecedented attention on global change, the current debate revolves around the availability and sustainability of natural resources and how to achieve equilibrium between what society demands from natural environments and what the natural resource base can provide. A full understanding of the range of issues, from the consequences of the changing resource bases to the degradation of ecological integrity and the sustainability of life, is crucial to the process of developing solutions to this complex challenge. Authored by world-class scientists and scholars, The Encyclopedia of Natural Resources provides an authoritative reference on a broad spectrum of topics such as the forcing factors and habitats of life; their histories, current status, and future trends; and their societal connections, economic values, and management. The content presents state-of-the-art science and technology development and perspectives of resource management. Written and designed with a broad audience in mind, the entries clearly elucidate the issues for readers at all levels. In Volume II, Water includes 59 entries and Air includes 31 entries. The Water entries cover topical areas such as fresh water, groundwater, water quality and watersheds, ice and snow, coastal environments, and marine resources and economics. The Air entries cover air pollutants, atmospheric oscillation, circulation patterns and atmospheric water storage, as well as agroclimatology, climate change, and extreme events. Additional topics in meteorology include acid rain, drought, ozone depletion, water storage, and more. Natural resources represent such a broad scope of complex and challenging topics that a reference book must cover a vast number of subjects in order to be titled an encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia of Natural Resources does just that. The topics covered help readers face current and future issues in the maintenance of clean air and water as well as the preservation of land resources and native biodiversity.
