Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are ghosts real? This age old question seems to have plagued most of humanity for centuries. The evidence that ghosts do exist is compelling, but certainly inconclusive. In this narrative, the author, Peggy Hicks sheds some light on this strange phenomenon as it pertains to a woman known as the richest madam in the Arizona Territory, Jennie Bauters aka ?Belgian Jennie? Jennie Bauters was from Antwerp, Belgium. She sailed across the Atlantic destined for the United State of America in 1896. Her story details the hardship and violence one might expect from a true Wild West tale. Jennie Bauters owned and operated several houses of ?ill repute? and eventually became the richest madam in the Arizona Territory. They called these women soiled doves, prostitutes, or madams. The truth is, they were whores and everybody knew it. Explore the details of Belgian Jennie's gruesome murder by her lover ?CC? as she ran barefoot in her nightclothes down a dusty road. Learn about her controversial burial. Find out why one hundred years later her bones were dug up and thrown in a Home Depot bucket! Since these disturbing events, there have been reported sightings of a female apparition resembling Jennie, haunting the darkened streets of GoldRoad, Oatman, Jerome and Kingman, Arizona. Some believe that this is indeed the ghost of Belgian Jennie. After reviewing the evidence presented in this book, you can decide for yourself if you believe that ghosts are real.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover just how Jerome, Arizona, became known as “America’s Largest Ghost Town”—and what spirits walk its historic streets. Jerome was once home to the largest copper mine in Northern Arizona, built on the steep terrain of Cleopatra Hill. The small town, population fifteen thousand at its peak, was shockingly nefarious. Diversions for the hardworking miners came by way of saloons, gambling and ladies of the evening. Shootouts and murders, violent accidents in the mines and smelters and fires and diseases scourged its denizens. Life was tough on the mountain—death came too soon for many. When the copper mine closed in 1953, Jerome was rendered a ghost town, and its spirits still lurk among the living. The stories in this book will convince you they are here for a reason. Includes photos!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The account begins as a true ghost story based on actual events. After an unsettling, modern day, ghostly encounter at a crumbling 1920's bordello in Jerome, Arizona, the author sets out on a quest and uncovers some deplorable secrets regarding the attractive, but devious Madam that once resided there. This curvaceous Madam began her career in the early 1900's in the red light district of Storyville in New Orleans. It was there where she met and eventually married the famous Jelly Roll Morton. She frequently changed her name and even her race in order to accommodate g=her ever-changing circumstances. She bleached her skin and straighten her hair as if to deny her African heritage ... or was it just a trick of her trade? Constantly on the move, she operated the Arcade Saloon in the pioneer town of Las Vegas, Nevada, and then a jazz club in San Francisco. Moving on to the rich mining town of Jerome, Arizona, she ran a "house of pleasure" called the Cuban Queen Bordello. Much went on behind her closed doors, where gambling, prostitution, and bootlegged whiskey were always on the menu. Late one night in 1927, one of her working girls was murdered in her own bed. This cunning madam, along with her handsome accomplice, kidnapped the dead girl's baby boy and slipped out of town never to be heard from again.... until now."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1944, American airman Gerald E. Sorensen was shot down over Nazi occupied Belgium. The Belgian Resistance recovered Sorensen and sheltered him in the home of the Abeels family. Friendship between Sorensen and the Abeels blossomed and they came to consider each other as family. The Abeels were active in the Resistance and Sorensen ultimately volunteered to join his Belgian brother Roger Abeels in the Secret Army. Just moments before the British Army arrived to liberate the village of Marcq-lez-Enghien, Sorensen and Abeels were killed in combat with the Nazis, fighting side-by-side. This book tells Sorensen's story: his upbringing, education, marriage and military service; his evasion of capture and kinship with the Abeels; his experience in the Resistance; his final combat and his impact on those he left behind. But this book is more than a biography. It recounts the courageous struggle of the Belgians who risked everything to save Allied airmen and explains why Sorensen and Abeels are extraordinary symbols of the enduring values at the heart of today's transatlantic alliance.

Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the historiographical and theoretical fields of race, gender, and war. In brief, Race and Gender in Modern Western Warfare (RGMWW) offers an introduction into how cultural constructions of identity are transformed by war and how they in turn influence the nature of military institutions and conflicts. Focusing on the modern West, this project begins by introducing the contours of race and gender theories as they have evolved and how they are employed by historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and other scholars. The project then mixes chronological narrative with analysis and historiography as it takes the reader through a series of case studies, ranging from the early nineteenth century to the Global War of Terror. The purpose throughout is not merely to create a list of so-called "great moments" in race and gender, but to create a meta-landscape in which readers can learn to identify for themselves the disjunctures, flaws, and critical synergies in the traditional memory and history of a largely monochrome and male-exclusive military experience. The final chapter considers the current challenges that Western societies, particularly the United States, face in imposing social diversity and tolerance on statist military structures in a climates of sometimes vitriolic public debate. RGMWW represents our effort to blend race, gender, and military war, to problematize these intersections, and then provide some answers to those problems.
