Book Synopsis Inside the Stalin Archives by : Jonathan Brent
Download or read book Inside the Stalin Archives written by Jonathan Brent and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To most Westerners, Russia remains as enigmatic today as it was during the Iron Curtain era. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country had an opportunity to confront its tortured past. In INSIDE THE STALIN ARCHIVES, Jonathan Brent asks why this didn't happen. Why are the anti-Semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion sold openly in the lobby of the State Duma? Why are archivists under surveillance and phones still tapped? Why does Stalin, a man responsible for the deaths of millions of his own people, remain popular enough to appear on boxes of chocolate sold in the Moscow airport? Brent draws on fifteen years of access to high-level Soviet archives to answer these questions. He shows us a Russia where, in 1992, used toothbrushes were sold on the sidewalks, while now shops are filled with luxury goods and the streets are jammed with BMWs. Stalin's spectre hovers throughout, and in the book's crescendo Brent takes us deep into the dictator's personal papers, an unnerving prophecy of the world to come. Both cultural history and personal memoir, INSIDE THE STALIN ARCHIVES is a deeply felt and vivid portrait of Russia in the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis A Spy in the Archives by : Sheila Fitzpatrick
Download or read book A Spy in the Archives written by Sheila Fitzpatrick and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1968 historian Sheila Fitzpatrick was 'outed' by the Russian newspaper Sovetskaya Rossiya as all but a spy for Western intelligence. She was in Moscow at the time, working in Soviet archives for her doctoral thesis on AV Lunacharsky, the first Soviet Commissar of Enlightenment after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Despite KGB attention, and the impossibility of finding a suitable winter coat, Sheila felt more at ease in Moscow than in Britain—a feeling cemented by her friendships with Lunacharsky's daughter, Irina, and brother-in-law, Igor, a reform-minded old Bolshevik who became a surrogate father and a intellectual mentor. An affair with young Communist activist, Sasha, pulled her further into a world in which she already felt at home. For the Soviet authorities and archives, however, she would always be marked as a foreigner, and so potentially a spy. Punctuated by letters to her mother in Melbourne and her diary entries of the time, and borne along by Fitzpatrick's wry, insightful narrative, A Spy in the Archives captures the life and times of Cold War Russia.

Book Synopsis Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives (Classic Reprint) by : Frank A. Golder
Download or read book Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives (Classic Reprint) written by Frank A. Golder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Materials for American History in Russian Archives Permission to Use the Archives. A foreigner desiring to use the Official archives must secure authorization from the Russian Ministry Of Foreign Affairs through the representative Of his country residing in Petrograd. Each application is considered on its own merits, and although permission is usually granted to persons Of approved scholarship, it should not be assumed as a matter Of course. It may take some time before the application is acted upon and it would therefore be unwise to set out for Russia until there is definite assurance that access to the archives will be given. This permission is only for the Archive Of the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs at Petrograd. If, in addition, the scholar wishes to examine material on his subject found in other places the director of the above mentioned archive will arrange this. TO help the authorities in Russia, the applicant should state clearly and definitely the subject and period he wishes to investigate, the object in view, and when he plans to arrive. The application should be accompanied by credentials from men and institutions Of learning as to the character and standing Of the applicant. Facilities for Study. When the scholar has arrived on the field he will find the archivists very willing to co-operate with him. On the whole there is little red tape. Unfortunately the physical facilities are not everywhere adequate. The primary purpose Of the government archives is to preserve the documents for Official use. Scientific investigation is a secondary matter, especially so far as foreigners are concerned, for not many Of them come. It is therefore not surprising that no special arrangements are provided. In some cases there is no room for an extra table, and only by crowding is an additional place made. Time. The greatest drawback, however, is not the want of Space, for the Officers of the archive will Often inconvenience themselves to accommodate the stranger, but the lack Of time. Church and civil holidays follow each other in rapid succession, and make many days unavailable. Moreover, the archives are Open only for a few hours each day, never more than five, usually from 11 a. M. To 4 p. M., and sometimes only two, I p. M. To 3 p. M. This is the winter schedule. In summer it is worse, for then the Officers go away on their vacations and the hours Of work are reduced. The result is a peculiar situation: in the winter time the hours are longer, but there is little daylight; in summer the hours are short, though daylight lasts long. Were it not for the numerous holidays during the spring months that season would be the best for investigation. Book Synopsis Dimitrov and Stalin by : Georgi Dimitrov
Download or read book Dimitrov and Stalin written by Georgi Dimitrov and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bulgarian Georgi Dimitrov, Stalin's close confidant and trusted ally, served as secretary general of the Communist International (Comintern) from 1934 to its dissolution in 1943. In this collection of more than fifty top-secret letters, the real workings of the Comintern emerge clearly for the first time. Drawn from classified Soviet archives only recently opened to Russian and American scholars, these letters offer unique insights into Soviet foreign policy and Stalin's attitudes and intentions while the Great Terror of the 1930s was in progress and in the years leading up to the Second World War. Annotated by the editors to provide the historical context in which these letters were written, the collection is vivid and startlingly significant. The letters confirm the complete dependence of the Comintern on the Kremlin, while also exposing bureaucratic maneuvering, backbiting, and jockeying for influence. These messages cast much light on the Soviet confusion about policies toward foreign Communist parties, and they uncover the extent to which Stalin shaped the Comintern. Stalin's perspectives on America, French communism, and the Spanish Civil War are recorded, as are his differences with Mao Zedong and with Marshal Tito at important turning points. With the publication of these letters, the history of twentieth-century communism gains authentic evidence about a critical decade.
