It features a surprising mix of buildings, from award-winning contemporary projects (such as a crematorium that stands in a seemingly endless landscape), over historical must sees (such as the Stoclet palace), up to less obvious buildings (such as a Brutalist church in West-Flanders) and breath-taking architect's homes"--Back cover.
Book Synopsis The Practice Turn in Architecture: Brussels after 1968 by : Isabelle Doucet
Download or read book The Practice Turn in Architecture: Brussels after 1968 written by Isabelle Doucet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes a city? What makes architecture? And, what is to be included in the discussions of architecture and the city? Attempting to answer such ambitious questions, this book starts from a city’s specificity and complexity. In response to recent debates in architectural theory around the agency and locus of critical action, this book tests the potential of criticality through-practice. Rather than through conceptual and ideological categorisations, it studies how architecture and criticality work within specific circumstances. Brussels, a complex city with a turbulent architectural and urban past, forms a compelling case for examining the tensions between urban politics, architectural imaginations, society’s needs and desires, and the city’s history and fabric. Inspired by pragmatist-relational philosophies, this book tests the potential of criticality through-practice. It studies a series of critical actions and tools, which occurred in Brussels’ architectural and urban culture after 1968. Weaved together, Brussels architectural production emerges from a variety of actors, including architects, urban policy makers, activists, social workers, and citizens, but also architectural movements and ideologies, urban renewal programs, urban traumas, plans and projects, and mundane everyday practices and constructions. This book contributes to the study of Brussels and offers a timely contribution to recent scholarship on the critical reappraisal of architectural debates from the 1960s through to the 1990s. In addition, by showing how pragmatist-relational philosophies can be made relevant for architectural theory, the book opens hopeful potentials for how architectural theory can better contribute to the formulation of a critical agenda for architecture.

Download or read book XX Models written by Marie-Cécile Guyaux and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Reasons for Walling a House by : Enrique Marty
Download or read book Reasons for Walling a House written by Enrique Marty and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reasons for walling a house' is a book about the unusual transformation of a small single family house by the Belgian architecture firm 51N4E. A couple living in a single family house on the Belgian countryside wanted to have 'more space'. But, instead, the architects that they hired enclosed their small house with a three-meter-tall steel wall. This paradoxical transformation challenged the owners to rethink their ideas of a home. Upon the project's completion they decided to open up their residence as a guest house for artists, designers, writers, and thinkers. Each person invited would receive a carte blanche, a fridge full of food, and the opportunity to have the run of the house without its inhabitants. Reasons for Walling a House unravels the secrets of an unlikely transformation, seen through the eyes of the first seven guests-the artists Enrique Marty and Dirk Braeckman, theater director and actor Josse de Pauw graphic designers Something Fantastic, as well as the architects Andrea Branzi, BeL and 51N4E.
Book Synopsis Raamwerk in Practice. Lichtervelde Youth Centre by :
Download or read book Raamwerk in Practice. Lichtervelde Youth Centre written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Bart Decroos and Raamwerk (architects Gijs De Cock and Freek Dendooven) unfold the design process of Lichtervelde Youth Centre, through a set of unpublished work documents including sketches, scale models, plans, and pictures. Through four anecdotes, they explore how the reality of the construction site allowed them to continue the design process during the realisation of the building itself. Beyond the singularity of this remarkable project, the book demonstrates the critical relevance of construction in architecture theory and discourses. Three additional contributions shed lateral light on the level of research pedagogics and theory: the external outlook and the inner knowledge complement each other.0The book results from the collaboration between KU Leuven, ULB and U Liège within Architecture In Practice, a multi university research group exploring the multiple ways in which individuals can engage their professional architecture practice in academic research and reciprocally. The book has been double blind peer reviewed.
