Book excerpt: Salvatore Pirina and Melancholie (mit Monstern) are glad to present their brand new artistic project based on a fusion of photography and the art of collage. Through video projecting some works of art on bodies they lead you in a private Wunderkammer crowded of hybrid creatures born from a fusion of flesh, light and shadow. Reality meets virtuality and fades into it. Color redesigns the body into a second skin precious and rare. Evanescent creatures live for few minutes destined to return to their human state of which one can keep a trace through these images.

To feel truly at home in the Bay Area, read Doris Sloan's intriguing stories of this region's spectacular, quirky landscapes."—Hal Gilliam, author of Weather of the San Francisco Bay Region "This is a fascinating look at some of the world's most complex and engaging geology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an understanding of the beautiful landscape and dynamic geology of the Bay Area."—Mel Erskine, geological consultant "This accessible summary of San Francisco Bay Area geology is particularly timely. We are living in an age where we must deal with our impact on our environment and the impact of the environment on us. Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginius Island is a landscape of ruins, a shadow of its former industrial might. Today, the island consists of approximately twelve acres and numerous remains of industries and domestic structures maintained by Harpers Ferry National Historical Park for the purpose of interpreting industry. Archaeological investigations over the past several decades have focused on recovering remnants of its industry, while recent work has also examined the lives of the workers and their families. The history of this West Virginia island is linked closely with the nineteenth-century developments that occurred at Harpers Ferry and the rest of the industrializing Mid-Atlantic region. This book addresses the memory of the small island's industrial community, showing the relationship between changes in industrial management techniques and the changes experienced in daily life by workers and their community between 1800 and 1930.During this time, the island was populated by craftsmen, laborers, mechanics, capitalists and their employees, and numerous families. Factories and mills harnessed waterpower to produce goods. By the late nineteenth century, industrial management techniques had shifted from strong paternalistic controls to absentee forms of ownership, and the island was home to a single, economically homogenous class. Manufacturing was replaced by extractive industries. This book analyzes these industry transitions and their implications for American society. The authors examine the local and national significance of historical trends toward industrialization at Virginius Island by combining perspectives from archaeology, oral history, the theory of collective memory and identity, and the contemporary uses of heritage. This analysis offers readers an understanding of the cultural process of industrialization. They Worked Regular will appeal to readers interested in the history of Virginius Island and Harpers Ferry, archaeology, heritage studies, industrialization, and cultural resource management.

Book excerpt: The Tijuana River Valley Historical Ecology Investigation synthesizes hundreds of historical maps, photographs, and texts to reconstruct the ecological, hydrological, and geomorphic conditions of the Tijuana River valley prior to major European-American landscape modification. How did the valley look and function before there was the state of California, the city of Tijuana, or an international border? What habitat types and wildlife were found there? How have these habitat types and the physical processes that shaped them changed over time? And finally, what can the valley's ecological past tell us about its present and future? In answering these fundamental questions, this richly-illustrated study provides scientists, managers, and residents in the valley with information designed to support and inspire ongoing management and restoration activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes called "The Chivington Massacre" by those who would emphasize his responsibility for the attack and "The Battle of Sand Creek" by those who would imply that it was not a massacre, this event has become one of our nation’s most controversial Indian conflicts. The subject of army and Congressional investigations and inquiries, a matter of vigorous newspaper debates, the object of much oratory and writing biased in both directions, the Sand Creek Massacre very likely will never be completely and satisfactorily resolved. This account of the massacre investigates the historical events leading to the battle, tracing the growth of the Indian-white conflict in Colorado Territory. The author has shown the way in which the discontent stemming from the treaty of Fort Wise, the depredations committed by the Cheyennes and Arapahoes prior to the massacre, and the desire of some of the commanding officers for a bloody victory against the Indians laid the groundwork for the battle at Sand Creek.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing Site Significance is an invaluable resource for archaeologists and others who need guidance in determining whether sites are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Because the register's eligibility criteria were largely developed for standing sites, it is difficult to know in any particular case whether a site known primarily through archaeological work has sufficient 'historical significance' to be listed. Hardesty and Little address these challenges, describing how to file for NRHP eligibility and how to determine the historical significance of archaeological properties. This second edition brings everything up to date, and includes new material on 17th- and 18th-century sites, traditional cultural properties, shipwrecks, Japanese internment camps, and military properties.
