Book excerpt: A geomorphic investigation was conducted to serve as a guide for estimating the potential location of cultural resources (archaeological sites) in the Bayou Bodcau and Tributaries Project Area and to describe the environmental context of those sites which may be located during the subsequent cultural resources survey. The investigation was designed to provide the archaeologist with three types of information including (a) definition and delineation of geomorphic features in the study area, (b) development of a chronology for the geomorphic features, and (c) estimation of the probability of the existence of buried geomorphic features of archaeological significance. Geomorphic features of the study area were defined on the basis of interpretation of aerial photographs, topographic maps, soil maps, borings, and field observations. These geomorphic features, delineated on four 7-minute (1:24,000) USGS topographic quadrangles, included abandoned channels, abandoned courses, raft distributary channels, overflow channels, natural levees, crevasses, point bars, backswamps, rimswamps, valley margin lakes, upland scarps, and historic accretion deposits. Based on the consideration of the apparent geomorphic development of the study area and several basic assumptions of environmental preference of prehistoric cultures, recommendations for the cultural resources survey of the impacted area are made.

Book excerpt: Archaeology of Louisiana provides a groundbreaking and up-to-date overview of archaeology in the Bayou State, including a thorough analysis of the cultures, communities, and people of Louisiana from the Native Americans of 13,000 years ago to the modern historical archaeology of New Orleans. With eighteen chapters and twenty-seven distinguished contributors, Archaeology of Louisiana brings together the studies of some of the most respected archaeologists currently working in the state, collecting in a single volume a range of methods and theories to offer a comprehensive understanding of the latest archaeological findings. In the past two decades alone, much new data has transformed our knowledge of Louisiana's history. This collection, accordingly, presents fresh perspectives based on current information, such as the discovery that Native Americans in Louisiana constructed some of the earliest-known monumental architecture in the world—extensive earthen mounds—during the Middle Archaic period (6000–2000 B.C.) Other contributors consider a variety of subjects, such as the development of complex societies without agriculture, underwater archaeology, the partnering of archaeologists with the Caddo Nation and descendant communities, and recent research in historical archaeology and cultural resource management that promises to transform our current appreciation of colonial Spanish, French, Creole, and African American experiences in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Accessible and engaging, Archaeology of Louisiana provides a complete and current archaeological reference to the state's unique heritage and history.

Book excerpt: These sites have been employed to characterize the archeological resource base within the project area. Analysis of present and future land use, based upon past and predicted clearance of forested land within the project area, permits assessments of the nature and extent of impacts to the archeological resource base from project induced land clearance. Site distributions among the geomorphological strata have been predicted based on a general model of prehistoric use of the the alluvial floodplain. The predicted and observed distributions permit discussions of man-land relationships within the project area. Previously recorded site locations were used to permit further assessments of these predicted relationships. Keywords: Prehistoric and historic archeology; Sampling.

Book excerpt: The summer 1988 excavation resulted in the recordation of 3 archeological features associated with a late 19th and early 20th century rice irrigation system. Part 1 discusses the excavations at 16SJB29. The natural setting and previous archeological investigations in and around the project area provide a backdrop for the project. The local economic history is presented, with emphasis on the land tenure history. Field investigations are reviewed, and the individual features discussed. finally, the archeological results are synthesized, and compared with previous investigations of rice irrigation systems in south Louisiana. Part 2 discusses the riverine economic development of the St. John the Baptist Parish region, and the effects of geomorphic and cultural processes on batture archeological features. Historic indigo, sugar, and rice production are discussed, as are landings, wharves, and levee structures. A summary of the historical development of each is presented, with emphasis on those aspects which produced archeological remains. Archeological expectations are developed, previous related excavations are discussed, and priorities are presented for future archeological research. The major processes that affect the batture are discussed, including natural riverine processes, flood control and river management construction, industrial development, and the towing and shipping industry. Keywords: Batture archaeology. (edc).

Book excerpt: A literature search, and reconnaissance level archeological and architectural survey was conducted of portions of the Amite Basin, in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Livingston Parishes, Louisiana. The project was conducted to provide historical and archeological data necessary for completing feasibility studies of flood control measures. The projects under consideration include channel improvements to the Amite River and 10 tributaries, seven levees, and the Comite River Diversion Channel. The literature search included examination of the historic development of the region, and emphasized identification of anticipated archeological site locations within the project areas under study. In addition, previous archeological investigations and previously recorded archeological sites were examined. The field reconnaissance involved examination of areas along project corridors for cultural resources, and recordation of geomorphological and cultural data. Approximately 230 acres were surveyed. Based on the literature and field reconnaissance, recommendations are made for further testing in the project areas.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the results of the Phase I cultural resources survey and archeological inventory of the proposed Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Project (Contract No. DACW29-97-D-0018) in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. This investigation was completed on behalf of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., in September and October of 1999. As part of the cultural resources component associated with this undertaking, an archeological inventory was authorized to assess three separate tracts within the Area of Potential Effect; these totaled 144.4 ha (356.8 ac) in size. Each of the three project items was assessed as having a high probability for containing intact cultural deposits by archeologists on staff with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Fieldwork for this project consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by systematic shovel testing throughout the Area of Potential Effect. This investigation resulted in the identification and subsequent assessment of four standing structures (24-896, 24-897, 24-898, and 24-899). In addition, previously recorded Site 16IV23 fell within the limits of the overall Area of Potential Effect and it was revisited as part of this investigation. The site, which had been situated on a natural levee between an unnamed creek and the Lower Grand River, has been destroyed by prior borrow activities associated with the construction of the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee. On the basis of this intensive cultural resources investigation, four standing structures and one previously recorded archeological site were identified. None of the cultural resources identified within the Area of Potential Effect associated with the Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Project possess the qualities of significance as defined by the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation (36 CFR 60.4 A-D). No additional testing of these three project items is recommendc.

The improvements are part of a larger project undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works, the City of Baton Rouge, and East Baton Rouge Parish to construct drainage improvements in the Amite River and Tributaries, East Baton Rouge Parish Watershed Flood Control Project. The areas selected for study are located near two previously reported prehistoric archaeological sites: l6EBRl3 and 16EBR26. The project area for l6EBRl3 encompassed approximately 4.6 acres and that for 16EBR26 encompassed approximately 6.6 acres. Fieldwork for this project, consisting of an intensive pedestrian survey that included shovel tests and auger borings, was conducted by a three-person team. No significant standing structures were located in the project area. No archaeological remains were encountered, and no further work is necessary.
