Book excerpt: This report represents the third in a publication series which summarizes the results of a multiphase cultural resource management program in Cochiti Reservoir, New Mexico. The present phase of the research concerns a program for mitigation for those archeological sites which will be directly impacted by the floodwaters between 5322 and 5400 foot elevations retained in Cochiti Reservoir. During the course of the mitigation program, twenty sites that span late Archaic (En Medio phase), Anasazi(Pueblo III, Pueblo IV), and Historic (Spanish Colonial, Territorial) periods have been investigated. The site reports and appendices to this volume provide descriptive summaries of the results of the mitigation program at the intrasite level of analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Situated at the intersection of scholarship and practice, Heritage Keywords positions cultural heritage as a transformative tool for social change. This volume unlocks the persuasive power of cultural heritage—as it shapes experiences of change and crafts present and future possibilities from historic conditions—by offering new ways forward for cultivating positive change and social justice in contemporary social debates and struggles. It draws inspiration from deliberative democratic practice, with its focus on rhetoric and redescription, to complement participatory turns in recent heritage work.Through attention to the rhetorical edge of cultural heritage, contributors to this volume offer innovative reworkings of critical heritage categories. Each of the fifteen chapters examines a key term from the field of heritage practice—authenticity, civil society, cultural property, cultural diversity, democratization, difficult heritage, discourse, equity, intangible heritage, memory, natural heritage, place, risk, rights, and sustainability—to showcase the creative potential of cultural heritage as it becomes mobilized within a wide array of social, political, economic, and moral contexts. This highly readable collection will be of interest to students, scholars, and professionals in heritage studies, cultural resource management, public archaeology, historic preservation, and related cultural policy fields."

This book was released on 1979 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the final report concerning a five year long archeological project which was undertaken to recover information about cultural resources within the present area of Cochiti Reservoir in the northern Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. Three previous volumes have summarized data recovered from intensive surveys and two seasons of excavation within the reservoir boundaries. These reports have served as basic documentation required by Federal law to mitigate the destruction of archeological remains caused by flooding. This volume serves as an interpretive and analytical synthesis of those data. In 21 chapters, the contributors to this report provide detailed analyses of settlement, subsistence and adaptive changes which characterize the human occupation of the northern Rio Grande Valley over the last four millenia. Papers are grouped according to broad cultural and temporal periods of adaptation-Archiac, prehistoric Pueblo and Historic Spanish-and emphasize analysis of residential size, subsistence pursuits and economic articulation of the occupants within the region during each period of adaptation. Particular emphasis is placed upon developing and evaluating a number of models proposed to account for settlement dynamics and adaptive change through time.

Book excerpt: At the height of their power in the late eleventh century, the Chaco Anasazi dominated a territory in the American Southwest larger than any European principality of the time. Developed over the course of centuries and thriving for over two hundred years, the Chacoans’ society collapsed dramatically in the twelfth century in a mere forty years. David E. Stuart incorporates extensive new research findings through groundbreaking archaeology to explore the rise and fall of the Chaco Anasazi and how it parallels patterns throughout modern societies in this new edition. Adding new research findings on caloric flows in prehistoric times and investigating the evolutionary dynamics induced by these forces as well as exploring the consequences of an increasingly detached central Chacoan decision-making structure, Stuart argues that Chaco’s failure was a failure to adapt to the consequences of rapid growth—including problems with the misuse of farmland, malnutrition, loss of community, and inability to deal with climatic catastrophe. Have modern societies learned from the experience and fate of the Chaco Anasazi, or are we risking a similar cultural collapse?
