Book excerpt: The Camino site (16JE223) was a multi-component site located within the limits of a planned interior drainage canal to be constructed as part of the V-Levee Floodwall and Highway 45 Levee Closures, a feature of the Westwego to Harvey Canal, Louisiana Hurricane Protection Project, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Components revealed at the Camino site included a prehistoric shell midden; a late-eighteenth-century occupation, and an early-nineteenth-century occupation. These components were neither horizontally nor vertically discrete. The late-eighteenth-century component is presumed to be associated with the occupation of Bayou des Families by Canary Islanders (Islenos), who were settled there by the Spanish colonial government in 1779. The settlement was largely abandoned over the next several years. Nonetheless, a few households of Islenos remained in the area as late as the first decade of the nineteenth century. The prehistoric component consisted of two small Rangia deposits and a scatter of aboriginal ceramics. While some of the aboriginal ceramics were collected from the shell deposits, the majority were found mixed with European material at the site. Radiocarbon dates indicate that the occupation dates ca. A.D. 1020 to 1405. Evidence for the early-nineteenth-century occupation consists of several sherds of annular and green shell-edged pearlware, a few cut nails, a key, and a shovel. Some of the earlier material from the site may also date to this later occupation.

Book excerpt: Building the Devil’s Empire is the first comprehensive history of New Orleans’s early years, tracing the town’s development from its origins in 1718 to its revolt against Spanish rule in 1768. Shannon Lee Dawdy’s picaresque account of New Orleans’s wild youth features a cast of strong-willed captives, thin-skinned nobles, sharp-tongued women, and carousing travelers. But she also widens her lens to reveal the port city’s global significance, examining its role in the French Empire and the Caribbean, and she concludes that by exemplifying a kind of rogue colonialism—where governments, outlaws, and capitalism become entwined—New Orleans should prompt us to reconsider our notions of how colonialism works. "[A] penetrating study of the colony's founding."—Nation “A brilliant and spirited reinterpretation of the emergence of French New Orleans. Dawdy leads us deep into the daily life of the city, and along the many paths that connected it to France, the North American interior, and the Greater Caribbean. A major contribution to our understanding of the history of the Americas and of the French Atlantic, the work is also a model of interdisciplinary research and analysis, skillfully bringing together archival research, archaeology, and literary analysis.”—Laurent Dubois, Duke University

Book excerpt: This study examines the formation of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the French colonial period (1699-1769), both as a place in the colonial imagination and as a creole port in a busy corner of the eighteenth-century Atlantic World. The objectives are twofold. It argues that two major factors in the French period contributed to New Orleans' character: (1) the role of the Enlightenment in engineering the city and colonial life, and (2) the rapid development of a local creole society during a period of imperial 'abandonment' beginning in 1731.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archeological Investigations of Six Spanish Colonial Period Sites: Barataria Unit, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, Louisiana Each site was carefully examined for surface artifacts. A site datum was established, and shovel tests were excavated at 5 m intervals along two bisecting lines. Horizontal definition along these lines was considered complete when a minimum of two sterile tests had been excavated in each of four directions. Additional shovel tests were excavated at five meter intervals along a grid off the original bisecting lines at i6jei97, i6je2i4, 16je198, i6jei99, and i6je2i6, and along four rays from the datum at 16je215. Horizontal definition along these lines was considered complete when one sterile test was excavated in each direction. Shovel test dimensions for site definition were 30 x 30 cm, and they ranged from 30 to 50 cm depth. All soil excavated from shovel tests was screened through inch mesh. At least one 1 x 1 in unit was excavated at each of the six sites (figure These were excavated in levels of 10 cm or less to sterile substrata. All excavated soil was screened through inch mesh. At least one profile of each excavation unit was drawn. Strata within each excavation unit were characterized according to soil type and Munsell color. A soil probe test was excavated in the floor of each completed unit to a depth of one meter in order to characterize underlying soils. A map was prepared for each site using compass and tape. The maps depicted locations of shovel tests and excavation units, locations of surface scatters of artifacts, and locations of important natural and cultural features present. Sites i6jei97, i6jei98, i6jei99, i6je2i4, and 16je215 were visited in February and March 1989 to determine if additional cultural features could be discerned while foliage was at a minimum. During this reconnaissance, three additional potential Canary Islander sites were located. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Archeological data recovery was undertaken in the Algiers Point Historic District, Orleans Parish, La, pursuant to governing historic resources in the Algiers Point Levee Setback Project area. This document reviews the prosecution and results of all cultural resources investigations. Field investigations and their results are summarized; laboratory procedures and the nature of analyses of remains from the project area are discussed. A primarily late nineteenth and early twentieth century assemblage is defined, and a complete paradigmatic classification of historic ceramics from Algiers Point is presented. Components and subassemblages are dates, using mean ceramic dates and bracketed glass dates. Functionally defined subassemblages are compared using descriptive statistics, in order to elucidate behavioral differences between different and similar classes of features. Status differentials between components are examined, using ceramic prices indexing and descriptive statistics. Finally, the research program at Algiers Point is evaluated against a model of the hierarchial levels of archeological interpretation. Weaknesses in method and theory are reviewed, and approaches used in this report are summarized.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of field work within a portion of the Holy Cross Historic District. The study area consisted of approximately 26 acres. Shovel tests and units were dug within four city squares which were assigned state site numbers 16OR130-134. excavations and data analyses indicate that archeological deposits and features are associated with several components (a nineteenth century brick yard and slave quarters, late-19th- to early-20th century residences, commercial establishments, and truck farms) and that these deposits exhibit the quality of integrity. In addition, they are significant because of their research potential. These deposits and features contain artifacts which could further our understanding of lifeways from approximately 1800 to 1920. Because the archeological resources are significant, detailed recommendations are provided in the report concerning mitigative data recovery in the event that construction in the study area becomes necessary.
