Download or read book Indian Epigraphy written by D.C. Sircar and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most significant of India's contributions of the civilization of the world was made in the ancient period. Unfortunately, the history of this glorious epoch, which is an interesting chapter in the annals of human civilization, was lost and we have been reconstructing it on the basis of information gathered from various sources. Of these, epigraphy is the most important, since the major part of what we already know about ancient India is derived from the study of inscriptions. In the present work, Professor D.C. Sircar deals with various problems relating to Indian pigraphy and it is expected to be useful to people interested in ancient Indian history in general and Indian inscriptions in particular. Some of the topics discussed herein are: inscriptions and their evidence, languages in which the inscriptions are written, writing materials, the preparation and preservation of documents, copperplate grants, stanzas on bhumi-dana, Indian epigraphy abroad, systems of dating and the different eras, technical expressions including royal titles and official designations, taxes, land measures, nomenclature, etc. There are thirty-six plates illustrating various types of epigraphical records.

Book Synopsis Epic Narratives in the Hoysaḷa Temples by : Evans
Download or read book Epic Narratives in the Hoysaḷa Temples written by Evans and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a detailed exposition of the visual retellings from the Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata and Bhāgavata Purāṇa on specific South Indian Hoysaḷa temples. The first part of the book deals with the Amṛteśvara temple, particularly its narrative panels depicting the Rāmāyaṇa, Mahābhārata and Bhāgavata Purāṇa. The text is a résumé of episodes paired with photographs which illustrate and review the visual retellings and explore Indian techniques of visual narrative. Corollary material from other Hoysaḷa temples with narrative reliefs, including new sites, is presented in the second part. There are very few published contextual studies of Indian narrative sculptures, and so the book is a contribution to the documentation of Indian medieval art, examining visual narratives within the context of the Hindu temple. The book is illustrated with 150 photographs.
Book Synopsis The Candellas of Jejākabhukti by : R. K. Dikshit
Download or read book The Candellas of Jejākabhukti written by R. K. Dikshit and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1976 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age Of The Candellas Is One Of The Glorious Epochs Of Ancient Indian History. Their History Has Been Attracting The Scholars Ever Since The Publication Of Cunningham S Reports, But Barring A Few Papers And A Chapter Each In Vaidya S History Of Mediaeval Hindu India And Ray S Dynastic History Of Northern India, There Was No Comprehensive Work On The Subject When I Assigned The Topic To Dr. Dikshit For His Doctorate Thesis (Degree Awarded In 1950). There Has Been Considerable Delay In The Publication Of The Thesis, But It Has Enabled The Author To Revise And Elaborate It In The Light Of Subsequent Discoveries. The Present Book Gives An Authentic Account Of The History Of The Candellas, And Is Well Documented. It Is Based On A Critical Appreciation Of The Available Sources, Literary As Well As Archaeological, And Personal Exploration Leading To The Discovery Of Certain Inscriptions That Had Not Been Noticed Earlier. The Author Has Utilized Rupakasatakam, An Important Work Of Candella Times, For The First Time-A Work That Has Not Been Noticed By Other Writers On The Subject. Dr. Dikshit Is Objective In His Approach, Uninfluenced By Historical Bias Or Dogmatism. On Certain Crucial Points, Where He Has Ventured To Differ From Other Scholars, He Has Set Forth His Views With Clarity-Based On Sound Arguments. This Work Is A Valuable Contribution To The History Of The Candellas, And I Am Sure, It Will Prove Useful To All Those Who Are Interested In Its Study. -
Book Synopsis Re-searching Transitions in Indian History by : Radhika Seshan
Download or read book Re-searching Transitions in Indian History written by Radhika Seshan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of transitions in Indian history emerged early when the term ‘transition’ denoted shifts from one period to another. The notion of transition itself has moved beyond being primarily economic to include dimensions of society, culture and ideology. This volume brings together scholarly works that re-examine and re-define the concept of transition by looking into a range of subjects including religion, culture, gender, caste and community networks, maritime and mercantile modes, ideas of nationalism and historiographies across geographical and temporal settings. With contributions by leading scholars from South Asia, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of ancient history, modern Indian history, sociology and social anthropology, and South Asian studies.
