Book excerpt: Stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to central Canada, North America's great interior grasslands were home to nomadic hunters and semisedentary farmers for almost 11,500 years before the arrival of Euro-American settlers. Pan-continental trade between these hunters and horticulturists helped make the lifeways of Plains Indians among the richest and most colorful of Native Americans. This volume is the first attempt to synthesize current knowledge on the cultural history of the Great Plains since Wedel's Prehistoric Man on the Great Plains became the standard reference on the subject almost forty years ago. Fourteen authors have undertaken the task of examining archaeological phenomena through time and by region to present a systematic overview of the region's human history. Focusing on habitat and cultural diversity and on the changing archaeological record, they reconstruct how people responded to the varying environment, climate, and biota of the grasslands to acquire the resources they needed to survive. The contributors have analyzed archaeological artifacts and other evidence to present a systematic overview of human history in each of the five key Plains regions: Southern, Central, Middle Missouri, Northeastern, and Northwestern. They review the Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland, and Plains Village peoples and tell how their cultural traditions have continued from ancient to modern times. Each essay covers technology, diet, settlement, and adaptive patterns to give readers an understanding of the differences and similarities among groups. The story of Plains peoples is brought into historical focus by showing the impacts of Euro-American contact, notably acquisition of the horse and exposure to new diseases. Book excerpt: Forty-eight archaeological sites were identified during a 1977 survey of the proposed Burlington Dam Flood Control Project site. Priority areas surveyed were the Lake Darling area, acreage downstream of Lake Darling dam to the proposed Burlington Dam site and from the head of Lake Darling to the Canadian border. These areas maintain five general eco-zones. Prehistoric human adaptations favored the Northern forest, Terrace Grasslands, and Upland Prairie eco-zones. Plains Village manifestations from the Woodland time period are located predominately in the Northern Floodplain Forest. Plains Nomadic occupants probably used both the Floodplain Forest and Terrace Grasslands. Cultural material analyses suggest tht ceramic components with a preponderance of Swan River chert lithic debitage area Plains Village manifestations. Non-ceramic manifestations with an abundance of Knife River flint debitage appear to represent Plains Nomadic cultural types. Both cultural components co-existed in the Upper Souris Valley throughout Woodland times. The 1977 survey points out two facts. First, much of the archaeological resources were irretrievably lost after the construction of Lake Darling in the 1930's. Secondly, a significant body of a data remains which must be investigated thoroughly and be mitigated on a basis equal with other project considerations. Most individual site recommendations are based on the assumption that the proposed Burlington Dam will adversely affect the known sites.

For many years afterward, as fascination with the famed 1876 fight intensified, visitors to the area scavenged the many relics left behind. It took decades, however, before researchers began to tease information from the battle’s debris—and the new field of battlefield archaeology began to emerge. In Uncovering History, renowned archaeologist Douglas D. Scott offers a comprehensive account of investigations at the Little Bighorn, from the earliest collecting efforts to early-twentieth-century findings. Artifacts found on a field of battle and removed without context or care are just relics, curiosities that arouse romantic imagination. When investigators recover these artifacts in a systematic manner, though, these items become a valuable source of clues for reconstructing battle events. Here Scott describes how detailed analysis of specific detritus at the Little Bighorn—such as cartridge cases, fragments of camping equipment and clothing, and skeletal remains—have allowed researchers to reconstruct and reinterpret the history of the conflict.
