Hamlin of Bangor, Maine, kindly gave to the Curator of the Museum information of an interesting lndian burial place in Bucksport. In the summer of 1892, the opportunity occurred of securing the assistance of Mr. Willoughby, who is a Maine man and familiar with the region mentioned by Dr. Hamlin, to carry on for the Museum the exploration of this burial place and also of another at Orland. The results of these explorations proved so interesting, and the work was so admirably carried out in accordance with the Museum methods, that it was decided to use the material from the Orland site to illustrate the Methods of Archaeological Research by the Pea body Museum, in the Harvard University Exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The collection of specimens, as well as the photographs, sketches, field notes and a plaster model of the burial place at Orland, all by Mr. Willoughby, were exhibited in the Liberal Arts Building. The exhibit attracted favorable comment and was awarded a medal at the close of the Exposition. The Bucksport exhibit was made in the Department of Ethnology in the Anthropological Building. Furthermore, they have been taught that the death of Jesus is the only way individuals can receive eternal salvation. In general, this notion is called the "doctrine of blood atonement" or "penal substitution," or some similar name. One reason for this teaching is that the development of Newtonian mechanics has led us to believe that God's "laws of salvation" must be as easy to understand as the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century "laws" of our physical world. This book demonstrates that there are alternatives for understanding Jesus' execution that are consistent with the twentieth- and twenty-first-century understanding of our physical world. In fact, the early Christian writers (including the Bible itself) described these alternatives. "Sacrifice" was only one form of the early Christian narrative explaining the death of Jesus. Although "blood atonement" was understandable in ancient Roman culture, it is not understandable in our culture. The inevitable conclusion is that we should abandon "blood atonement" and develop one of the alternative ways of understanding the cosmic significance of Jesus' execution.

A grown-up's voice added roughness and pitch to mimic the characters, to murmur tension-filled passages, to pause drawing out the suspense between the Queen's guesses. Maybe the storyteller's voice finally rose to exult when shouting the discovered name or, drawing close, whispered it malevolently. Those long-ago readers intended to enchant us, sometimes to put us to sleep, and for a while we delighted in this magical performance. Then we grew up: obligated to attend to an adult's endless travails, we forgot little Rumpelstiltskin. But he eventually returned. Years later we told this story to our children joining a parade of generations stretching back—no one knows how far. We voluntarily enrolled in a long procession that greys toward the back of the line, blurred, nameless, and wispy before the figures pale translucent and finally become invisible. We became merely the foremost reciters of a tale whose narration enrolled us in a club whose rules we think we know, but don't really. This tale may count among the world's oldest dirty jokes. The punchline misplaced, over time its wickedly funny insights about adult life passed for childish nonsense.
