Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaeology in India: With Especial Reference to the Works of Babu Rajendralala Mitra Although the study of Indian Archaeology may to most people appear a very and trivial affair, to me it happens to have been far otherwise. Though I will not say it has been the most important business of my life, it certainly has been its most important recreation, and I have derived from it more enjoyment than from perhaps any other source. I began the study some fifty years ago, at the time when the genius of Prinsep was re-creating, and breathing fresh life into the chaotic mass of idle fables, which, before his time, represented the history and doctrines of Buddhism. The chronology of the sect and the biography of its founder were then daily assuming shape and becoming clearer; but little had been done to ascertain what their architecture had been, or to discriminate what really belonged respectively to Buddhism, to the J ains or to the Hindus, still less had the origin of these various forms been traced, or how they arose, and what their in uence was on each other. What little had been attempted, was of the haziest and most tentative character. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplementary Catalogue of the Archaeological Collection of the Indian Museum Dr. John Anderson's excellent 'Catalogue and Hand-book' of the Archaeological collections in the Indian Museum was published as far back as 1883, and, during the twenty-seven years that have elapsed since then, the Museum Galleries have been enriched by the acquisition of a large array of valuable sculptures and other antiquities. It is with these additions, numbering more than 3000 in all, that this supplement deals. It was the last work to be accomplished by the late Dr. Theodor Bloch before his untimely death in September, 1909, and was written by him at a time when his health and strength were fast failing and at a season of the year when the climate of Calcutta must have been peculiarly distressing to him. Yet, in spite of these adverse conditions, and in spite, too, of the haste in which the task was done, this short supplement has a special value for us, inasmuch as it embodies the opinions and ideas of one who had been closely associated with the Museum for over fourteen years, and who had come to be recognized as the first authority on the antiquities of Eastern India. It is for this reason that, in passing Dr. Bloch's manuscript through the Press, I have made it my aim to introduce as few corrections as possible, even though I believed that the author himself would not have been sparing of them, had he been able to revise the proofs. The only additions of any significance that I have made are those relating to the measurements and materials of the exhibits, the details of which have been supplied by my assistant, Babu Rakhal Das Banerji. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a definitive archaeological perspective on the history of early urban growth in India. It does this by looking at both the protohistoric and the early historic periods, coming down to about AD 300 and later. Geographically, it covers all the major areas of the subcontinent. The existing archaeological data have been synthesized to yield a comprehensive picture of the morphology of ancient sites and their place within what is currently known of their settlement perspectives. This book addresses itself to some of the cardinal issues of South Asian archaeology - the origin and decline of the Indus civilization; the issue of its merger in the main flow of India's later cultural development; the archaeological basis of its long chronology; aspects of Indus urbanism; the reasons for the growth of neolithic-chalcolithic inner India; and the patterns and problems of urban growth in the early historic period on the subcontinental scale. In each case the author's concern is with understanding the situation at the grassroots level within an essentially South Asian framework. The hypotheses offered in this book should lead to some major rethinking about the story of archaeological development in the subcontinent.
