Book excerpt: Excerpt from Archaeologia Americana, Vol. 4: Transactions and Collections of the American Antiquarian Society The "New England's Rarities Discovered" of Josselyn exhibits the natural history of that region as it presented itself to the minds of the first comers, and as explained according to their views of science. It derives new interest from the copious and learned annotations of Professor Tuckerman, and fills a place in our means of information respecting the original and purely native productions of New England which no other document so fully supplies. The Voyage to Spitzbergen, as connected with the mercantile enterprises of which these Colonies were the fruit, and with the men who planned or promoted their establishment, has important relations to that period of American history, and to a branch of inquiry which has, perhaps, received less particular attention than it deserves; viz., the commercial inducements, influences, and agencies, public and private, under which the coasts of the Northern Continent were explored, and projects for colonization in different localities conceived. It will be seen, that, with the exception of Professor Tuckerman's contribution, the papers contained in the volume have been prepared by the several members of the Publishing Committee, each assuming a separate division of labor and responsibility. They jointly submit the result to the Society and the public, believing that whatever delays may have occurred in the fulfilment of their trust are compensated by the value of the additional matter which some of them have consequently been able to furnish from the archives of the mother-country.
