Sie stehen vor der Aufgabe, interne Abläufe kontinuierlich zu verbessern, Kundenwünsche umfassend zu erfüllen sowie offen, flexibel und lernfähig zu bleiben. Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, kommt der "Ressource Mensch" eine immer größere Bedeutung zu. Ein Indiz dafür ist die Vielzahl an Forschungsarbeiten, die sich mit neuen Modellen der Arbeitsgestaltung beschäftigt, in denen eine stärkere Partizipation der arbeitenden Menschen realisiert werden kann. Insbesondere für Organisationen im Bereich der Industrie wird aus dem systemischen Ansatz, der u.a. die Selbststeuerung postuliert, von mehreren Autoren die teilautonome Gruppe als neues Modell der Arbeitsorganisation abgeleitet. Charakteristika teilautonomer Gruppen liegen in erweiterten Möglichkeiten und Erfordernissen hinsichtlich der Tätigkeitsbreite der Arbeit, der Entscheidungsbefugnisse sowie der Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Menschen. Die Frage ist nun, wie sich diese erweiterten Handlungsspielräume auf das subjektive Befinden der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter auswirken. Wichtige Größen einer zukunftsorientierten Personalpolitik sind in diesem Zusammenhang die Ansprüche und Motive der arbeitenden Menschen in Bezug auf die Arbeit und die Art und Weise, wie diese in der jeweiligen Organisation erfüllt werden können. Gang der Untersuchung: In diesem Kontext kommt der Arbeitszufriedenheit, die als wichtiger Indikator für die Qualität des Arbeitslebens betrachtet wird, große Bedeutung zu. Dabei wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit eine hohe Arbeitszufriedenheit als unmittelbares Ziel für die arbeitenden Menschen selbst verstanden. Dieser Arbeit liegt die Frage zugrunde, welche Zusammenhänge zwischen den individuellen Handlungsspielräumen und der Arbeitszufriedenheit bestehen. Dabei werden die zu untersuchenden Zusammenhänge zunächst auf der Ebene relevant erscheinender theoretischer Modelle untersucht. Die aus diesen Überlegungen abgeleiteten Hypothesen werden daran anschließend in einer empirischen Untersuchung in den teilautonomen Gruppen eines Industrieunternehmens überprüft. Thereby, we posit ICT use after hours for work purposes as potential stressor, resource, or demand (see action theory by Hacker, 1998, 2003; Frese and Zapf 1994), depending on many personal and environmental factors, but primarily on cognitive appraisals (see transactional model of stress by Lazarus and Folkman 1984). This three-way division enables us to propose various linear and non-linear associations to focused outcomes. We conclude with an overall discussion on further research concerning the identified research gaps.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people.
