Book excerpt: Romance & Finance is the story of Goldash, a pleasant poet and ambidextrous snooker player, who meets his dream lady, Oya, a medical doctor and medical psychic, purely by chance in a bookshop whilst studying in London. Oya and Goldash have a very special, loving relationship. Their extraordinary love affair is ended by tragedy after just twenty-one months, and his life falls apart. After that, when he gives up on everything and lets himself go, Mili, a psychic and doctor of finance, comes into his life. He has a new beginning and works hard to bring rhythm and rhyme to his life to become a prosperous poet. This novel is based on a true story of a man coming to terms with having to rebuild his life from scratch. It shows how he copes with the comedies and tragedies presented to him as he slowly but surely moves onwards and upwards. The story tells of the remarkable people he meets on the long, lonely road to becoming a happy and wealthy man, and how they all help and support him in his endeavour to achieve the goal he has set himself. Book excerpt: Half-Argoran shifter, Arak O’tir knew good people existed. He worked with some of them. But as a deadly Jutak warrior, his work often took him into the less savory elements of society. So much so, he shielded his heart from those he rescued. That was, until one particular mission leaves him longing for a specific female. Someone who made him tremble even if she wasn’t from his world. Sylvia Forrester never expected her quest for a husband would lead her into danger. Nor could she have ever foreseen that her search would find her captured by aliens and added to a list of potential sex-slaves to be sold for a high profit. While her captors should have broken her, destroying any hope she’d had of a life happily-ever-after, Sylvia’s savior has her wondering if her earlier dreams could still come true. But Arak and Sylvia soon discover love and passion has its own price.

Book excerpt: 'A stunning romantic comedy ... fun, warm and perceptive' Jessie Stephens Elodie Cheesman's joyous debut is a modern take on the age-old decision between following your head or your heart in the search for love. There's an algorithm for everything else, so why not love? When 24-year-old lawyer Romy learns that she is at her 'optimal stopping point' (the mathematically designated point at which one should select the next 'best person' who comes along in order to have the best chance at happily ever after), she knows it's time to get serious about her love life. Ruthlessly rational, with a belief in data over destiny, Romy knows that reliability and consistency are dependable options, while passion and lust are transitory and only bring pain and disillusionment. That's why sensible Hans the engineer is the right choice, as opposed to graphic designer James who exhibits the kind of behaviour that has got her into trouble before. Isn't he? LONGLISTED FOR THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK DESIGN AWARDS 2022 BEST DESIGNED COMMERCIAL FICTION COVER Praise for Love, in Theory 'Cheesman plays with love's biggest questions, like: Is finding a life partner chaos? Or could there be an underlying logic? A hopeful, feel-good read, Love, in Theory perfectly captures the beauty - and occasional horror - of dating in the modern age.' - Jessie Stephens, author of Heartsick

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In wartime Egypt, can a British submarine commander trust his Italian lover? 1941: The teeming city of Alexandria is almost under siege by the Afrika Korps. A vortex of ancient loves and murderous intrigues, Alexandria is the Royal Navy’s major Eastern Mediterranean base. But Italian frogmen and their so-called ‘human torpedoes’ are posing a lethal threat to British warships. Hardly the time or place for a British submarine commander to fall in love, especially as the girl in question is half-Italian, and Alexandria’s large Italian population is only too eager to welcome Rommel and his troops into town. Interspersed with scenes of naval action described in gripping and authentic detail – seen through Italian as much as British eyes – the human drama unfolds, its actors ever aware of the mounting threat of a German breakthrough. A stunning naval thriller sure to enthral readers of Philip McCutchan and Jeff Edwards, Love For An Enemy shows Alexander Fullerton at the peak of his form. Praise for Alexander Fullerton ‘The most meticulously researched war novels that I have ever read’ Len Deighton ‘The scene of battle is quite overpowering’ Sunday Times ‘His action passages are superb, and he never puts a period foot wrong’ Observer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GATE OF HORN is the second of a two volume series of novels, the first being THE GATE OF IVORY. It follows the same set of characters found in THE GATE OF IVORY through Eastern and Western geographical and historical settings made enormously large and complex by the introduction of two remarkably well educated men who wholly redefine the term “terrorist.” Pierre Mustapha and John Paris combine intellect and philosophy and brilliant science to create a unique gift for the world. Only the clear logic, actions, and astonishing courage of a unique group of adventurers can prevent this gift from producing unthinkable consequences for every living thing on Earth. This is the book for readers who prefer to have their thoughts served with humor, action, intelligence, and a measure of linguistic grace.

Book Synopsis Recovering Armenia by : Lerna Ekmekçioglu
Download or read book Recovering Armenia written by Lerna Ekmekçioglu and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth study of the aftermath of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and the Armenians who remained in Turkey. Following World War I, as the victorious Allied powers occupied Ottoman territories, Armenian survivors returned to their hometowns optimistic that they might establish an independent Armenia. But Turkish resistance prevailed, and by 1923 the Allies withdrew, the Turkish Republic was established, and Armenians were left again to reconstruct their communities within a country that still considered them traitors. Lerna Ekmekçioglu investigates how Armenians recovered their identity within these drastically changing political conditions. Reading Armenian texts and images produced in Istanbul from the close of WWI through the early 1930s, Ekmekçioglu gives voice to the community’s most prominent public figures, notably Hayganush Mark, a renowned activist, feminist, and editor of the influential journal Hay Gin. These public figures articulated an Armenian-ness sustained through gendered differences, and women came to play a central role preserving traditions, memory, and the mother tongue within the home. But even as women were being celebrated for their traditional roles, a strong feminist movement found opportunity for leadership within the community. Ultimately, the book explores this paradox: how someone could be an Armenian and a feminist in post-genocide Turkey when, through its various laws and regulations, the key path for Armenians to maintain their identity was through traditionally gendered roles. Praise for Recovering Armenia “With verve, passion and wit, Ekmekçioglu shows how central women were to the restoration of the Armenian community in the decade after the genocidal war. Recovering Armenia is a must-read for all students of the Great War and its aftermath, and for anyone who wants to understand the modern Middle East and the roots of sectarian conflict that continues in the region today.” —Elizabeth Thompson, University of Virginia “This remarkably innovative history offers . . . a thorough account of the ways in which . . . Armenian survivors of the genocide committed by Ottoman Turkey inventively reconstituted themselves as a harshly constrained yet enduring national minority within the new Turkish Republic . . . . A pioneering work that will prove indispensable.” —Khachig Tölölyan, Wesleyan University “Lerna Ekmekçioglu’s radically revealing and provocative book challenges conventional historical wisdom in its exploration of the continued existence of an Armenian minority in modern Turkey.” —Atina Grossmann, The Cooper Union

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sometimes I succumb to long sentences. This is it: when I – innocently new to all-devouring classical music world and cowardly naked to any independent opinion on it – ardently asked a once acquaintance of mine, a professional musician (still cannot figure out where exactly that professionalism lied in her), to interpret the psychological intention behind the delay in a measure of a Rachmaninoff prelude (I did not know the word “rubato” then), she said: “God, what will you ever understand? If I said [put here abundant professional terminology to terrify any novitiate away to deserts or to open space, depending how easy you are to scare], would you get it? Would that make any sense or difference to you?” Well yes. It would. It always has. And it always will. Classical music is nobody’s property, it does not rightlessly belong to anybody, to those professionals – first of all. It does not belong to everybody either. It belongs to each and every eager heart out there thirsty for the most accessible form of the Truth this world has ever seen and will ever know. It belongs individually. Equally. With nil discrimination.” Araks Shahinyan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling collection of engaging articles has enlivened cultural anthropology courses for decades. The lead editor of the sixteenth edition, Dianna Shandy, first encountered Conformity and Conflict as an undergraduate and began teaching from the book in 1999. From the first through the sixteenth edition, the editors have chosen classic works and solicited original pieces that powerfully illuminate the nature of culture and its influence on people’s lives. One of the overarching principles through the years has been to include material on North American cultures so readers can make their own cultural comparisons and see the relevance of anthropology to their own lives. Readers sharpen critical thinking skills as they examine their assumptions, identify perspectives, and assess their beliefs. Selections are organized around topics found in many textbooks and courses, facilitating usage by instructors who do not want to assign a standard text. Part introductions include discussion of many basic anthropological definitions. Article introductions coherently and systematically link selections to anthropological concepts. Sections and selections include environmental, global, and practicing anthropological subfields as well as traditional interests such as language, gender, kinship, economics, politics, law, inequality, and religion. The forty readings in this collection cover a broad range of theoretical perspectives, juxtaposing classic and contemporary ethnographic work to introduce students to a broad range of authors. The selections provide a fascinating way to look at human experience and make sense of the world around us.
