Book excerpt: In the fall of 2006, the University of Maryland, along with various government and industrial sponsors, invited leading researchers from all over the world to a two-day Summit on Arabic and Chinese Handwriting Recognition (SACH 2006). The event acted as a complement to the biennial Symposium on Document Image Understanding Technology (SDIUT), providing a focused glimpse into the state of the art in Arabic and Chinese handwriting recognition. It offered a forum for interaction with prominent researchers at the forefront of the scientific community and provided an opportunity for participants to help explore possible directions of the field. This book is a result of the expansion, peer review, and revision of selected papers presented at this meeting. Handwriting recognition remains the Holy Grail of document analysis, and Arabic and Chinese scripts embrace many of the most significant challenges. We are pleased to have 16 scientific papers covering the original topics of handwritten Arabic and Chinese, as well as 2 papers covering other handwritten scripts. We asked each author to not only describe the techniques used in addressing the problem, but to attempt to identify the key research challenges and problems that the community faces. The result is an impressive collection of manuscripts that provide various detailed views of the state of research. In this book, six articles deal directly with Arabic handwriting. • Cheriet provides an overview of the problems of Arabic recognition and how systems can use natural language processing techniques to correct errors in lexicon-based systems.

Book excerpt: While handwriting recognition tasks for Latin script based languages have received considerable attention, far less work has been done on the Arabic script. Arabic poses some unique challenges, such as a larger character set, the presence of dots and diacritics, and intra-word whitespace regions. Machine learning approaches have the potential to significantly improve state of the art Arabic handwriting recognition results. This dissertation presents several such machine learning techniques, such as writer adaptation and segmentation free unconstrained text processing. We integrate these techniques into novel algorithms for general recognition, word spotting, and transcript mapping. Writer adaptation or specialization is the adjustment of handwriting recognition algorithms to a specific writer's style of handwriting. Such adjustment yields significantly improved recognition rates over a generalized recognition counterpart algorithms. Specialization is commonly used in online Latin script handwriting applications, such as for tablet computers or PDAs. Some rudimentary offline Latin script adaptation methods have been proposed recently in the literature as well. Handwriting adaptation for the Arabic script, however, is unexplored. An iterative bootstrapping model is presented which adapts a writer-independent model to a writer-dependent model using a small number of words achieving a large recognition rate increase in the process. Furthermore, a confidence weighting method is described which generates better results by weighting words based on their length. Script features unique to Arabic are discussed, as well as they are incorporated into the adaptation process. Even though Arabic has many more character classes than languages such as English, significant improvement is observed. One issue common to Arabic recognition tasks is generating candidate word regions on a page. Attempting to definitely segment the document into such regions (automatic segmentation) can meet with some success, but the performance of such an algorithm is often a limiting factor in spotting performance. Another approach is to directly scan the image on the page without attempting to generate such a definite segmentation. Such segmentation-free approaches result in better recognition at a performance cost. The algorithms discussed are tested using a database of truthed, page-length, handwritten Arabic documents. Where applicable, the literature standard IFN/ENIT database is used for testing as well. We validate our approaches by exploring the implications on such tasks as word spotting (attempting to find a query word or image and placement in a set of documents), transcript mapping (the automatic alignment of a handwritten document with its machine readable transcript), and general unconstrained recognition. Novel algorithms for these tasks are also presented. Specifically, contributions in this dissertation include novel descriptions of machine learning algorithms applied to Arabic handwriting recognition problems and quantification of the improvement generated by their usage. Examples of such algorithms include writer adaptation, versatile search, and the advantage and trade offs gained by processing such tasks as word spotting in a segmentation-free fashion instead of a segmentation-based manner.

Book excerpt: Interest in online handwriting recognition is increasing due to market demand for both improved performance and for extended supporting scripts for digital devices. Robust handwriting recognition of complex patterns of arbitrary scale, orientation and location is elusive to date because reaching a target recognition rate is not trivial for most of the applications in this field. Cursive scripts such as Arabic and Persian with complex character shapes make the recognition task even more difficult. Challenges in the discrimination capability of handwriting recognition systems depend heavily on the effectiveness of the features used to represent the data, the types of classifiers deployed and inclusive databases used for learning and recognition which cover variations in writing styles that introduce natural deformations in character shapes. This thesis aims to improve the efficiency of online recognition systems for Persian and Arabic characters by presenting new formal feature representations, algorithms, and a comprehensive database for online Arabic characters. The thesis contains the development of the first public collection of online handwritten data for the Arabic complete-shape character set. New ideas for incorporating relational information in a feature representation for this type of data are presented. The proposed techniques are computationally efficient and provide compact, yet representative, feature vectors. For the first time, a hybrid classifier is used for recognition of online Arabic complete-shape characters based on the idea of decomposing the input data into variables representing factors of the complete-shape characters and the combined use of the Bayesian network inference and support vector machines. We advocate the usefulness and practicality of the features and recognition methods with respect to the recognition of conventional metrics, such as accuracy and timeliness, as well as unconventional metrics. In particular, we evaluate a feature representation for different character class instances by its level of separation in the feature space. Our evaluation results for the available databases and for our own database of the characters' main shapes confirm a higher efficiency than previously reported techniques with respect to all metrics analyzed. For the complete-shape characters, our techniques resulted in a unique recognition efficiency comparable with the state-of-the-art results for main shape characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 3, language: English, abstract: Most of the governments and organizations have a huge number of handwritten documents generated by their daily processes. It is imperative to use computers to read the generated handwritten texts, and make them editable and searchable. Therefore, handwritten recognition lately became a very popular research topic and the number of its possible applications is very large. It's capable in resolving complex problems and simplify human activities by converting the handwritten documents into digital form. However, the Arabic handwritten text recognition is a complex process compared with other handwritten languages because Arabic handwritten text is cursive of nature. Therefore, this thesis proposed an Arabic handwritten text recognition and writer identification system based on segmenting the input handwritten text into handwritten sub-words. The system has two main modules that are used, for the recognition of the handwritten text and identifying the text's writer. The first module1 has six stages that work together to recognize the Arabic handwritten text and convert it into editable text. These stages are: image acquisition, segmentation, preprocessing, features base construction, classification and post-processing. The second module2 is identified the desired text's writers through several stages that similar to module1. The system proposes an efficient and accurate segmentation algorithm that segments the input handwritten text into a number of handwritten sub-images and each of these segmented sub-images has an Arabic handwritten sub-word. Besides that, an image thresholding algorithm is proposed to convert the sub-images into binary based on using fuzzy c-mean clustering method. Furthermore, the binary sub-images went through proposed noise removal algorithm in order to remove undesired pixels. After that, two groups of features ar

Book excerpt: Automatic handwriting recognition is the process of converting online and offline letters or words as a graphical form into its text format. Automatic Arabic Handwriting words recognition using deep learning neural networks is still in the early stages in terms of research. There are no general, complete, and reliable Arabic Handwritten Words (AHW) database (lexicon) that can be used as a reference or a benchmark for all researchers who want to extend the work on automatic Arabic handwriting word recognition. Also, many historic Arabic manuscripts have deteriorated because of inappropriate storage and most of them have not been digitized due to the lack of reliable database that can be used to recognize the words of Arabic manuscripts. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) can be used to solve the problems of automatic Arabic handwriting words recognition. In this work, a new DCNN algorithm applied to a new dataset of Handwritten Arabic words representing the seven days of the week named Arabic Handwritten Weekdays Dataset (AHWD) has been programmed, tested, and analyzed.

Book excerpt: A biometric algorithm for personal recognition by identification or verification of the person from his/her Arabic handwriting is presented. The system is online and text-independent. Dynamic data pertaining to handwriting, such as pressure, altitude and azimuth is collected from the user during the writing process, and is used to train models for each writer, after which a recognition system is developed for implementation. The focus in this work is to achieve a high recognition rate with minimal requirements for data and processing time. Based on our experimental results, a system based on Gaussian mixture models (GMM) yields the best classification performance. A full system is developed with a MATLAB-based Graphical User Interface and the Wacom Intuos4 digitizer tablet. We have achieved a best identification rate of 96% for writer identification; whereas for verification, we have obtained an FAR of 4.26% and an FRR of 4.00 %.

Book excerpt: Handwriting recognition in general and online handwriting recognition in particular has been an active research area for several decades. Most of the research have been focused on English and recently on other scripts like Arabic and Chinese. There is a lack of research on recognition in Turkish text and this work primarily fills that gap with a state-of-the-art recognizer for the first time. It contains design and implementation details of a complete recognition system for recognition of Turkish isolated words. It considers the recognition of unconstrained handwriting with a limited vocabulary size first and then evolves to a large vocabulary system. Turkish script has many similarities with other Latin scripts, like English, which makes it possible to adapt strategies that work for them. However, there are some other issues which are particular to Turkish that should be taken into consideration separately. Two of the challenging issues in recognition of Turkish text are determined as delayed strokes and high Out-of-Vocabulary (OOV). This work examines these problems and alternative solutions at depth and proposes suitable solutions for Turkish script particularly.

Book excerpt: Visual informatics is a field of interest not just among the information technology and computer science community, but also other related fields such as engineering, me- cal and health informatics and education starting in the early 1990s. Recently, the field is gaining more attention from researchers and industry. It has become a mul- disciplinary and trans-disciplinary field related to research areas such as computer vision, visualization, information visualization, real-time image processing, medical image processing, image information retrieval, virtual reality, augmented reality, - pressive visual mathematics, 3D graphics, multimedia-fusion, visual data mining, visual ontology, as well as services and visual culture. Various efforts has been - vested in different research, but operationally, many of these systems are not pro- nent in the mass market and thus knowledge and research on these phenomena within the mentioned areas need to be shared and disseminated. It is for this reason that the Visual Informatics Research Group from Universiti - bangsaan Malaysia (UKM) decided to spearhead this initiative to bring together experts in this very diversified but important research area so that more concerted efforts can be undertaken not just within the visual informatics community in Malaysia but from other parts of the world, namely, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and USA. This first International Visual Informatics Conference (IVIC 2009) was conducted collaboratively, by the visual informatics research community from the various public and private institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, and hosted by UKM.
