Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stumm and Morgan’s Aquatic Chemistry remains the classic resource on the essential concepts of natural water chemistry. The fourth edition, updated by Dr. James Jensen, continues the tradition of the three previous editions, which were designed for both self-study and classroom use. The new volume builds a solid foundation in the general principles of natural water chemistry and then proceeds to a thorough treatment of more advanced topics including applications and case studies. It illustrates key principles with a wide range of quantitative models, examples, and problem-solving methods. In addition, Jensen updates, organizes, and corrects inconsistencies from the third edition, while maintaining Aquatic Chemistry’s reputation of as one of the most respected fundamental water chemistry textbooks. Specifically, the fourth edition improves on the third edition by: 1: Correcting errors. The third edition has nomenclature inconsistencies, which will be corrected in the new edition. 2: Reorganizing - Aquatic Chemistry has grown by accretion. As a result, chapters have been added to the end of the text over the editions without significant reorganization of the preceding material. In addition, material left intact from older editions generally was not edited for style in later editions. This has lead to an inconsistent “look and feel” of the second and third editions. The fourth edition addresses these problems by reorganizing the chapters into three sections: water chemistry principles (current Chapters 1 and 2), equilibrium types (current chapters 3-9), and applications (current Chapters 10-15). Case studies will be added to supplement the applications section. 3: Updating, Expanding, and Emphasizing. The primary areas for updating the text include applications of inorganic carbon chemistry (e.g., chemistry of global warming and carbon sequestration), surface chemistry (developments since the introduction of surface complexation), and references cited. The author will also expand the material on the chemistry of treatment processes. The fourth edition has stronger emphasis on pedagogy, with more extensive explanatory text in many existing sections. The summary tables (previously used so effectively only in the early chapters) will be included in all chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is the basis of all life. Preservation of aquatic ecosystems and protection of water resources thus are among the most important goals of a sustainable development. The quality of water is mainly determined by its constituents, the entirety of the substances dissolved or suspended in water. To assess the water quality on a sound basis requires in-depth knowledge about the occurrence, behavior and fate of these constituents. That explains the importance of hydrochemistry (also referred to as water chemistry or aquatic chemistry) as a scientific discipline that deals with water constituents and their reactions within the natural water cycle and within the cycle of water use. This textbook introduces the elementary basics of hydrochemistry with special focus on reaction equilibria in aquatic systems and their mathematical description. It is designed as an introductory textbook for students of all environment-related courses who are beginning their hydrochemical education. Only minor knowledge in General Chemistry is required to understand the text. The book is also suitable for continuing education. Topics discussed in this textbook include: structure and properties of water, concentration measures and activities, colligative properties, basics of chemical equilibria, gas-water partitioning, acid/base reactions, precipitation/dissolution, calco-carbonic equilibrium, redox reactions, complex formation, and sorption. The text is supplemented by numerous figures and tables. More than 50 examples within the text as well as more than 60 problems to be solved by the reader support the acquiring of knowledge. Complete and detailed solutions to all problems are given in a separate chapter.

Book excerpt: Aquatic Chemistry Concepts, Second Edition, is a fully revised and updated textbook that fills the need for a comprehensive treatment of aquatic chemistry and covers the many complicated equations and principles of aquatic chemistry. It presents the established science of equilibrium water chemistry using the uniquely recognizable, step-by-step Pankow format, which allows a broad and deep understanding of aquatic chemistry. The text is appropriate for a wide audience, including undergraduate and graduate students, industry professionals, consultants, and regulators. Every professional using water chemistry will want this text within close reach, and students and professionals alike will expect to find at least one copy on their library shelves. Key Features Extremely thorough, one-of-a-kind treatment of aquatic chemistry which considers: a) chemical thermodynamics fundamentals; b) acid/base, titration, and buffer calculations; c) CO2 chemistry and alkalinity; d) complexation of metal ions by ligands and chelates; e) mineral solubility processes; f) redox chemistry, including the chemistry of chlorine (as in disinfection), oxygen, CO2 and methane, nitrogen, sulfur, iron, and lead, including the story of lead in the drinking water of Flint, Michigan; and g) electrical effects in aqueous solutions including the Debye-Hückel Law (and related equations for activity corrections), double layers, and colloid stability Discussions of how to carry out complex calculations regarding the chemistry of lakes, rivers, groundwater, and seawater Numerous example problems worked in complete detail Special foreword by Jerry L. Schnoor 'There’s a lot to like about a book on water chemistry that lays it out simply. Einstein said that everything should be as simple as it can be, but not simpler. Wise advice. And that is what James F. Pankow has accomplished in the second edition of his textbook, Aquatic Chemistry Concepts. It covers the “waterfront” of essential inorganic chemistry topics, and it supplies enough examples to lead the student toward problem solving.' -From the Foreword, Jerry L. Schnoor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive contributed volume presents an account of current research and applications of chemical processes occurring at the interfaces of water with naturally occuring solids. Interactions of solutes with the solid surfaces are looked at from a mechanistic and dynamic point of view rather than a descriptive one. Processes discussed and concepts presented are applicable to all natural waters (oceans and fresh waters as well as soil and sediment water systems) and to the surfaces of natural solids such as minerals, soils, sediments, biota, and humus. Chapters progress from theoretical models and laboratory studies to applications in natural water, soil, and geochemical systems, emphasizing those processes that regulate the distribution and concentration of elements and compounds. Topics covered include adsorption mechanisms in aquatic surface chemistry, the electric double layer at the solid-solution interface, aspects of molecular structure in surface complexes: spectroscopic investigations, interpretation of metal complexation by heterogeneous complexants, the role of colloids in the partitioning of solutes in natural waters, and 'from molecules to planetary environments': understanding global change.

Book excerpt: This volume is of great importance to humans and other living organisms. The study of water quality draws information from a variety of disciplines including chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, engineering, and resource management. University training in water quality is often limited to specialized courses in engineering, ecology, and fisheries curricula. This book also offers a basic understanding of water quality to professionals who are not formally trained in the subject. The revised third edition updates and expands the discussion, and incorporates additional figures and illustrative problems. Improvements include a new chapter on basic chemistry, a more comprehensive chapter on hydrology, and an updated chapter on regulations and standards. Because it employs only first-year college-level chemistry and very basic physics, the book is well-suited as the foundation for a general introductory course in water quality. It is equally useful as a guide for self-study and an in-depth resource for general readers.
