Download or read book The Race for Fisheries and Hydrocarbons in the Caribbean Basin written by Clifford E. Griffin and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Integrationist is an independent policy advocacy and education organization, launched to contribute to the promotion of the work of regional integration in CARICOM. The journal, produced by the organization and bearing the same name, facilitates access to the works and contributions of the Region's leading intellectuals and opinion makers, both within the Caribbean and in the Diaspora. In this edition entitled The Race for Fisheries and Hydrocarbons in the Caribbean Basin, the contributors discuss various aspects of the BarbadosTrinidad and Tobago maritime dispute. In 2004 disputes came to a head between the two countries over access to migrating stocks of fish and potential sources of hydrocarbon resources beneath the seabed and brought to the fore issues of maritime territorial delimitation and a country's sovereign right to exercise exclusive control over the living and non-living resources within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), including the right to determine the conditions under which a CARICOM member state would be allowed to fish within the EEZ of another member state. The impact on intra-regional activities as well as wider international relations are discussed in this book. "

Book Synopsis Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in Latin America and the Caribbean – 2020 by : Wurmann, C. Soto, D., Norambuena, R.
Download or read book Regional review on status and trends in aquaculture development in Latin America and the Caribbean – 2020 written by Wurmann, C. Soto, D., Norambuena, R. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reviews the development of the aquaculture industry in the Latin America and the Caribbean region over the past decade. In 2018 aquaculture production in the region amounted to an estimated 3.1 million tonnes of aquatic products (excluding seaweeds) worth USD 17.2 billion at first sale. This food sector is vastly concentrated in a few countries with the combined output from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico representing over 85 percent of the total regional production. Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, tilapia, whiteleg shrimp and the Chilean mussel collectively contributed 80.4 percent and 85.9 percent of the regional production by volume and value, respectively. Marine aquaculture has been the dominant production environment in the region for the past two decades, accounting for 70.1 percent of the farmed output in 2018. Production models vary widely, with a concentration of large-scale companies in Chile, while primarily small- and/or medium-size operations in Brazil, Peru and several other countries. Introduced species remain top on the list among those farmed such as tilapia and the different salmonids both of which have contributed to local livelihoods and employment. Tilapia farming has contributed significantly to food security in many countries of the region while the largest proportion of farmed salmons have been destined to the export markets. Production prospects remain promising, however the industry requires in general better governance, the adoption at all levels of appropriate technologies and best practices, and renewed efforts to guarantee environmental sustainability and social acceptance as well as competitiveness and foresight to deal with climate and market changes. The small island developing states (SIDS) face additional challenges including limited expertise, high production costs, poor seed supplies, as well as extreme and destructive weather events. The report discusses issues that require wider regional attention for the aquaculture sector to grow. Key recommendations focus on governance-related improvements highlighting the need for solid sectoral development plans, support policies, and effective rules and regulations. The promotion of a stronger cooperation among the countries in the region as well as further afield on technical matters, species diversification and equal support to smalland large-scale farming operation are identified as key elements to foster investment and help the region gain a solid position among world aquatic food producers.

Download or read book Climate Change Implications for Fisheries and Aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report aims to facilitate the use of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th Assessment Report (IPCC AR5) by those concerned with the fisheries and aquaculture sector and their dependent communities. The extensive information within the AR5 is condensed from the fisheries and aquaculture perspective and guiding links to the relevant IPCC documents facilitating further investigation are provided. The report moves from the chemical and physical changes already observed and forecaste d within the aquatic systems (inland and marine), to the implications of these changes for fisheries and aquaculture production systems. The AR5 is then reviewed for knowledge on the effects, vulnerabilities and adaptation options within the sector and their dependent communities at the continent and regional scales. The report concludes with a review of knowledge gaps from the fisheries and aquaculture perspective that would support further IPCC efforts.

Book Synopsis Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture by : Bruce F. Phillips
Download or read book Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture written by Bruce F. Phillips and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 1059 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of the current and future effects of climate change on the world’s fisheries and aquaculture operations The first book of its kind, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture explores the impacts of climate change on global fisheries resources and on marine aquaculture. It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.
Book Synopsis Aquaculture: Ocean Blue Carbon Meets UN-SDGS by : David Moore
Download or read book Aquaculture: Ocean Blue Carbon Meets UN-SDGS written by David Moore and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a solutions based approach to reducing and removing CO2 from the atmosphere transforming it into solid (crystalline) CaCO3 through the ability of marine organisms such as molluscs, crustacea, corals, and coccolithophore algae. The overwhelming advantage of this approach is that it promises enhanced climate mitigation in comparison to planting forests, industrial/engineering carbon capture and storage process. It also provides a sustainable food resource. Furthermore, it would improve the ocean's biodiversity at the same time as the excess atmospheric CO2 released by our use of fossil fuels is returned to the place it belongs - as a present day fossil, safely out of the atmosphere to the distant future. If the level of finance and global effort that are readily foreseen for forest management and flue gas treatments were applied to expansion of global shellfish cultivation, curative amounts of carbon dioxide could be permanently removed from the atmosphere within a few decades. The concept presented in this book could have a profound influence on the life of the planet.

Book Synopsis Assessment of insurance needs and opportunities in the Caribbean fisheries sector by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Assessment of insurance needs and opportunities in the Caribbean fisheries sector written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change related natural disasters pose serious threats and risks to livelihoods of fishermen and women as well as to food security in the Caribbean. To respond to these threats and risks, the FAO, the Department of State of the United States of America and the World Bank introduced an initiative on climate risk insurance for the Caribbean Fisheries sector as part of a global initiative on Blue Growth. In support of this initiative a survey was conducted to identify fisheries assets that could be insured, value these assets, identify climate smart fisheries investments and practices and carry out an insurance needs and demand survey. This Circular presents survey findings from Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Grenada, St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Some of the key findings are that: 97 percent of the fishing vessels and fishing assets were not insured, while in each of the CARICOM countries there is at least one local insurer offering marine insurance; 83 percent of the fishers would purchase insurance coverage for their vessels if it would be more affordable; only 17 percent of the fishers had a health insurance and 20 percent had an life insurance policy. Moreover, more than one-third of the fishers would be interested to invest in safe harbor, anchorage, haul out and vessel storage facilities, including installation of bumper rails on piers and the use of fenders on boats and piers, if this would reduce insurance premiums. Based on the findings of the insurance demand survey, an organizational arrangement for a Caribbean Fisheries Risk Insurance Facility (CFRIF) was developed, presented at various regional fora and shared with interested stakeholders.

Book Synopsis Guidance on spatial technologies for disaster risk management in aquaculture by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Guidance on spatial technologies for disaster risk management in aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new guide describes the application of spatial technology to improve disaster risk management (DRM) within the aquaculture sector. DRM requires interrelated actions and activities to ensure early warning, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery for a wide range of natural, technological and complex disasters that can impact aquaculture operations and livelihoods. Spatial technology refers to systems and tools that acquire, manage and analyse data that have geographic context. Some of the technologies include satellite remote sensing, aerial surveys, global positioning systems, geographic information systems, information and communication technology and other data gathering sensors used, for instance, in meteorology. Spatial technology supports activities across all phases of the DRM cycle and its rapid development provides enhanced opportunities to support DRM within the aquaculture sector. This guide is organized in two parts. Part one is the “guidance”; it is the main body of the document and describes the processes and steps for the use of spatial technology within DRM for aquaculture. Part two includes selected country case studies from Bangladesh, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean, and Indonesia to illustrate the application of spatial technology in DRM for aquaculture at the national level within local contexts. Best practices at the farm and area management levels, supported by spatial technology, reduce volatility and risks and thus facilitate investment. Countries that would like aquaculture to grow sustainably and reliably are encouraged to use this guide in order to support spatial planning approaches and protect responsible investors. A separate summary version accompanies this publication.
