Book Synopsis Fragmented Memory by : Nicoletta Bruno
Download or read book Fragmented Memory written by Nicoletta Bruno and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chance, in addition to the unavoidable ambiguity caused by time, is one of the main guilty parties in the transmission of ancient texts – or lack thereof. However, the same cannot be said for what concerns the mechanisms of selection and loss of historical and literary memory, where the voluntary awareness of obscuring is often part of a precise aim, thus leading the cultural memory of a literate society to become fragmented. The present volume explores the devices and criteria of selection and loss in Ancient and Medieval texts and the subsequent fragmentation of such literature, but it also addresses the questions of the damnatio memoriae, of literary strategies such as reticence and omission, as well as of known texts deemed lost but re-found thanks to state-of-the-art methods in digitization. The many and diverse nuances of the concepts of omission, selection, and loss throughout Ancient and Medieval literature and history are illustrated through a number of case studies in the four sections of this volume, each examining a different facet of the topic: ‘Mechanisms and criteria of textual loss and selection’, ‘Lost texts re-discovered’, ‘Voluntary omissions and desire for oblivion’, and ‘Re-working the known’.

Book Synopsis Constructions in Spanish by : Inga Hennecke
Download or read book Constructions in Spanish written by Inga Hennecke and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructions in Spanish is the first book-length English-language volume in the field of usage-based and Cognitive Construction Grammar dedicated exclusively to Spanish. The contributions investigate a wide range of constructions from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, cutting across morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The constructionist perspective is also linked to comparative and typological research, to language learning and teaching and to multi-modal discourse analysis. The volume aims both at increasing the visibility of constructionist approaches to Spanish, and at offering data and analyses of Spanish for scholars working on constructional analyses of other languages. The volume thus addresses both scholars in Spanish and Romance linguistics, as it builds connections between more traditional approaches and constructionist approaches, and construction grammarians generally, especially scholars interested in comparative work.

Book Synopsis Changing News Use by : Irene Costera Meijer
Download or read book Changing News Use written by Irene Costera Meijer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changing News Use pulls from empirical research to introduce and describe how changing news user patterns and journalism practices have been mutually disruptive, exploring what journalists and the news media can learn from these changes. Based on 15 years of audience research, the authors provide an in-depth description of what people do with news and how this has diversified over time, from reading, watching, and listening to a broader spectrum of user practices including checking, scrolling, tagging, and avoiding. By emphasizing people’s own experience of journalism, this book also investigates what two prominent audience measurements – clicking and spending time – mean from a user perspective. The book outlines ways to overcome the dilemma of providing what people apparently want (attentiongrabbing news features) and delivering what people apparently need (what journalists see as important information), suggesting alternative ways to investigate and become sensitive to the practices, preferences, and pleasures of audiences and discussing what these research findings might mean for everyday journalism practice. The book is a valuable and timely resource for academics and researchers interested in the fields of journalism studies, sociology, digital media, and communication.
Book Synopsis Blind Man's Bluff: A Memoir by : James Tate Hill
Download or read book Blind Man's Bluff: A Memoir written by James Tate Hill and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors' Choice A Washington Independent Review of Books Favorite Book of 2021 A writer’s humorous and often-heartbreaking tale of losing his sight—and how he hid it from the world. At age sixteen, James Tate Hill was diagnosed with Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy, a condition that left him legally blind. When high-school friends stopped calling and a disability counselor advised him to aim for C’s in his classes, he tried to escape the stigma by pretending he could still see. In this unfailingly candid yet humorous memoir, Hill discloses the tricks he employed to pass for sighted, from displaying shelves of paperbacks he read on tape to arriving early on first dates so women would have to find him. He risked his life every time he crossed a street, doing his best to listen for approaching cars. A good memory and pop culture obsessions like Tom Cruise, Prince, and all things 1980s allowed him to steer conversations toward common experiences. For fifteen years, Hill hid his blindness from friends, colleagues, and lovers, even convincing himself that if he stared long enough, his blurry peripheral vision would bring the world into focus. At thirty, faced with a stalled writing career, a crumbling marriage, and a growing fear of leaving his apartment, he began to wonder if there was a better way.
