Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Civil War is often studied because of its battles, but people tend to ignore how it helped revolutionize the medical field. Bloodshed on the battlefield and the spread of disease led to advances in medical decision making and clinical knowledge. The war also triggered the birth of the nursing profession, the organization of the American health system, and the clinical usage of diagnostic equipment in approaches to disease management. Author Paulette Snoby, a registered nurse and award-winning research nurse, examines primary and secondary sources to show how medical treatments advanced during wartime, focusing on the explosion of innovation during the Civil War. By examining case histories, soldier and surgeon diaries, cemetery records, and other sources, she highlights important medical advances and also explores how African slaves in the South were cared for differently from the general population. A thorough scholarly study, Aprils Revolution offers information on slave infirmaries, early herbal remedies used by the slave population, and a better understanding of how our nations past wars affect the history of medicine.

Book Synopsis Education in Global Health Policy Making and Management by : Eduardo Missoni
Download or read book Education in Global Health Policy Making and Management written by Eduardo Missoni and published by EGEA spa. This book was released on 2013-11-17T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global health has been increasingly recognized as a key element of sustainable development. The recent increase in the number of public and private global health actors and the complex global governance for health boosted the need for professionals who combine a thorough understanding of health-related challenges with multidisciplinary training in social sciences, economics, and management. In the past few years, this has led, not only to the mushrooming of courses dedicated to global health, but also academic degrees in global health. By reviewing a recent attempt to innovate the educational offerings in global health policy and management by a consortium of academic institutions in Italy, the book analyzes the recent trends in global health education. The book concludes that while global health and development is certainly an emerging area in the higher education systems of many countries, international offerings in graduate programs are still highly dominated by those taught in medical schools, often failing to combine health sciences with economic, social, and management sciences. The multidisciplinary nature of global health education programs should be improved.

Book Synopsis Leading a Diversity Culture Shift in Higher Education by : Edna Chun
Download or read book Leading a Diversity Culture Shift in Higher Education written by Edna Chun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading a Diversity Culture Shift in Higher Education offers a practical and timely guide for launching, implementing, and institutionalizing diversity organizational learning. The authors draw from extensive interviews with chief diversity officers and college and university leaders to reveal the prevailing models and best practices for strengthening diversity practices within the higher education community today. They complement this original research with an analysis of key contextual factors that shape the organizational learning process including administrative leadership, institutional mission and goals, historical legacy, geographic location, and campus structures and politics. Given the substantive challenge of engendering a cultural shift for diversity in a university setting, this book will serve as a concrete primer for institutions seeking to develop a systematic and progressive approach to diversity organizational learning. Readers will be able to engage with provocative case studies that grapple with the current pressures emanating from diversity training and learn effective strategies for creating more inclusive environments. This book is a perfect resource for institutional leaders, administrators, faculty members, and key campus constituencies who are seeking transformational change, institutional success, and stability in a rapidly diversifying national and global environment.
